another addition to a successful franchise?! who saw it coming?!?

so yeah, next to speculation that that's Raiden in that keynote pic, we've got nothing yet. So here's first-quarter speculation!

This year at the Game Developers Conference, Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear series, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. And while he was at this year's GDC, he gave a keynote speech about game developing, overcoming struggles, and how to design.

During his speech, there were images on screen behind him, and one particular shot was that of "Mission: The Next MGS" and in the top right corner was an image of what appears to be a cyborg ninja.

Raiden had a bit part in MGS 4 and appears to have more to his story than what was revealed in Guns of the Patriots.

Will it be a continuation of his struggles for adapting after the events of part four? Perhaps we will see how Raiden became to wear his cyborg ninja exterior. There is also the story of how he rescued Sunny from the clutches of the Patriots.

Though Kojima will not be directing the next installment, you can bet that Kojima will have a bit role in its development

...did that feel hollow? off to wiki!

Before the release of MGS4, Kojima stated in an issue of Famitsu that he was already thinking about MGS5 but to have less involvement with future games in the series. In an interview with 1up.com, Kojima reveals he has three ideas for MGS5 but added that should Kojima Productions pursue them, Kojima would have to be more involved than he would prefer to be.

Ryan Payton, the Assistant Producer for Metal Gear Solid 4 mentioned a sequel when he announced that he would be leaving Kojima Productions on the August 26, 2008, saying, "It'll be hard not being involved in MGS5, but I've got the utmost confidence that Hideo Kojima, Ken Imaizumi, and our amazing team will put together another blockbuster game. I'll be cheering from the sidelines"[93] Hideo Kojima has also hinted to a sequel several times in other interviews.

Following Konami's event in Tokyo, celebrating the completion of Metal Gear Solid 4, 1UP translated one final audio clip featuring Revolver Ocelot who has a conversation with an unknown character about a "sequel."

On the end of Hideo Kojima's 2009 GDC keynote, he revealed an image hinting at a new Metal Gear Solid game.

I love Kojima in a way that's not even legal in some places, but still, the man should prolly take a step back and work on Project S with Suda51 or Zone of the Enders 3 or some new shit. I mean, i read that he took a step back with much of MGS3 and that one turned out awesome.

Nick. NICK. That's the same image from the April Fools Day MGS4 spoof video. It's not Raiden, it's Roy Cambpell. That isn't a sword, it's his cane. The whole point of the image was to get people excited, and then pull the carpet from under them with the april fools video!

Given the evidence, I know it's hard for you to realize that April Fools day ends on the first, but there's such a thing as takin' April Fools too far.

haha...alright, fine. but we still need a thread for the inevitable MGS5, so uh, let's focus on that. The campbell logo works fine till we get an actual one, circa 2011 or so.

I mean, Konami put their whole freakin' staff on 4 to finish it up. Id be surprised if we dont get a multi-plat Subsistence out of 4, but i still think a 5 is inevitable, with or without Kojima.

Given 4's ending, they dont even have to change protagonists,

but id personally look forward to a smaller, quieter cold war tale like 3, or something in-between like Portable Ops did.

yup, that image is all the rave. so, the internet sees 360 pads, wiimotes, mario, all kindsa shit.

if its MGS4 Subsistence, amazing. if its trophy support or MGS4 on 360, uh, great. if its another iphone game, fuck.

most folks want ZOE3. me? i echo the NeoGAF hopes for a WWII MGS with The Boss, or something with Solidus' time in Africa. fuck, anything in between MGS3 and 1 with Big Boss would make my fucking year.

that, or some shit called tornado outbreak.

I don't care when it takes place, a new metal gear is a new metal gear. I'm trying to not get myself TOO excited. Although, I can't imagine this much lead up for anything else....

Would love to see ZOE3 on PS3, oh man, that would be something special...

There's a new flash teaser at kojima prod site

http://www.konami.jp/kojima_pro/next/

I hear if you watch it straight for 8 hours Snake pops out to the exclamation sound!

Hey, in my eyes Kojima can do no wrong. Since the wii launched and he expressed interest in doing a project on it I've been chomping at the bit. I think he would make a game that finally took adavantage of the system's unique interface and strengths. Gotta be built ground up as a wii-exclusive tho.

Does the rest of the gaming community share my sentiments? Not really. Metal Gear is huge now. But what percentage of the people who bought and played metal gear, are "kojima-ites." How many even know who kojima is? 20%?, at most probably.

I'm just saying, while I'm eating it up and don't care if the game ends up being a fucking cell phone app, all this build up isn't really warranted for a non-metal gear title, imo.

yeah...i mean, we get countdowns and hype for pretty much anything these days, but he's got the kojima FOX symbol right there, and im kinda seeing Snake there, too. you're prolly right...id dig a new IP, but smart money's on something MGS related (though itd be hilarious if it was just trophy debut).

that said, ive come to a firm stance on my prior idea of a WW II The Boss/Cold War Big Boss game.

PS this? what?

mgs_clouds.jpg

raiden = lightning, sunny = sunny, ! = MGS? MGS Raiden/Sunny? damn you for fucking with my head, neogaf. Act 6 DLC would be so win, though.

so, here's the update to the announcement of the announcement, now featuring a timer? wow, kojiam hates us.

kojima_5_s.jpg

Project S or MGS5, more obviously the latter. seems a bit early, sure, but we got 2 MGS's last gen, and frankly, with most of the epic stuff tied up, i could go for a smaller-scale campaign like 3 was.

/MIND FUCKING BLOWN.

my love for Big Boss is likely illegal in a few states, and that render looks so badass. now, the followup image of Raiden on the side - ok, yeah, im kinda lost too. Im here hoping for another MGS3/Portable Ops kinda in-between Cold War story, but if anything, could that be Yeager/Null in the early states of being the Ninja?

fucking whatever, best news evar.

*edit: others on Neogaf kinda ehco my thoughts;

that cant be Raiden post MGS4, he's out of the suit and human again. It doesnt make sense to be in between 2 and 4 (though dont let that stop kojima), so im calling that Big Boss with Zanzibar Land on his beret and Grey Fox on the side.

also, "Soldiers without borders" is the best motto ive ever seen for Outer Heaven. wait, is that a bandana over raiden's eye? that's very grey foxy.

ps

*double edit: shit, that's not raiden's eye color...

Rumor has it that the game takes place 7 years after MGS4. And that dude is yet another clone of Big Boss (Apparently he played a key role in MGS, MGS2 and MGS4). Some point to Akiba...and I don't know why. :\

bah. im readin the same half-assed, censored interview you are, man! somehow, people have gathered akiba, raiden's son, or even a scenario of Raiden (when being transformed) revisiting Big Boss' adventures through VR. Given that its Kojima and how much he loves fucking with us, i cant rule out anything, but that'd better be Big Boss and i hope that's Null opposite of him.

i also have no idea where the theory of this being 2 games - ps3 & psp - much less shared connectivity. what's worse is, we both know E3 could come & go and we still might not know shit here.

...did you notice the map on the beret's a skull?

id accept sunny over akiba.

Not too thrilled about the possibility of yet another clone either. I too am hoping for a good Big Boss-induced Metal Gear. And yeah, it would be great if it was Null, but if he's in Crazy-Ninja Suit Mode then this has to take place between MG2 and MGS (WHICH WOULD TOTALLY FUCKIN' ROCK!!!). And yes, that map is very suspicious.

Or it could be two totally different games on totally different hardware. In any case, we gotta wait for Kojima to blurb out something come E3 while we lose sleep over this cockamamy(sp?) story mind-fuckfest.

so, i went and merged the E3 talk into this one. and yeah, this hype turned into Metal Gear Rising - aka Raiden's day out - and Metal Gear: Peace Walker, the further PSP adventures of Big Boss, which better be really good to make up for the lack of a PS3 title of the same subject matter.

Other pitched, but failed ideas:

wait, that one happened

also, a great MGS wallpaper, and if you're looking for more MGS character art, check here.
