  1. Can't believe Tarantino wasn't at least nominated for best director. That's the only thing I'm surprised about though.
  2. Agreed. Did you check out that Julia Holter album? You would love it - it's surreal and lovely.
  3. All amazing albums Ross. Thanks for reminding me about some of them. That Godspeed You Black Emperor album should probably go on my top 10 as well. I don't know what I would replace it with though :(
  4. This is a really fantastic review: http://blogs.suntimes.com/foreignc/2012/12/django-america.html "We find every type of violence in this film. Sometimes it forces us to cringe; I had to squint to obscure some moments, or look away during others. Sometimes the violence forces us to laugh because it gets so excessive that it becomes cartoonish. Sometimes, however, as a tale of vengeance it invites us to celebrate." "Thus, that culture of mastery also gives us a hint about the roots of our problems of violence. This film loads itself with altruistic violence, if there can be such a thing. But in this film, we watch the clash between those who exercise their masculine mastery over others, against those who exercise their masculine mastery to serve others. Through this film's lens, then, a source of violence in our culture is an innate need to dominate or to refuse domination. And that appreciation for self-determination also speaks to Tarantino and auteurism. Part of the appeal of Tarantino is that he seems to make his movies his way. His films mimic the movies we often ignore, featuring actors we've discarded, yet we call his films masterpieces. And, how rare is it that we see a movie, aside from documentaries, about American slavery? How bold is it that Tarantino chooses to speak to it!" "You may have noticed, also, that thus far I've avoided the more common questions explored in essays about this film, those related to slavery and race. "Django Unchained" is so captivating that it will generate a profit, and I hope that it will inspire more films about slavery, race, and their legacies. Otherwise, the conversation will end as soon as we shift to the next big movie. I know racism and bigotry all too well, but as a South Asian, this is a conversation I am part of only secondarily. Similarly, a major reason I have mostly avoided the conversation is that my colleague and dear friend Steven Boone has already written something better than I could have." ::: And this this is the review he mentioned above, which is also really poignant: http://blogs.indiewire.com/pressplay/quentin-tarantinos-django-unchained-and-the-many-spike-lees
  5. I don't know if y'all will be super interested in this, but I really look forward to Ebert's best of list every year...he writes outstanding reviews, and it gives me a chance to check out movies that I hadn't even heard of before http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2012/12/eberts_top_movies_of_2012.html
  6. 2012 was a fantastic year for music, and I'm curious as to what everyone's favorite albums are. I'll start! 1. Clark - Iradelphic (Just amazing. Etheral. Lovely.) 2. Alex Clare - The Lateness of the Hour (Diplo was the producer. And this is pop music at it's finest, as far as I'm concerned) 3 Frank Ocean - Channel Orange (The first single he released from the album brought me to tears, and while I'm not a *huge* hip hop fan - this was simply outstanding. 4. Com Truise - In Decay (Just a great album from start to finish. It's one of those albums that sounds better if you listen to the whole thing as one long song. He's a master at blending tracks and bleeding them into one another) 5. Fionna Apple - The Idler Wheel (I...just don't have words. She's probably the best female song writer of my generation. And her voice just gets more powerful and iridescent with age) 6. Grimes - Vision (2012 saw an insurgence of lovely electrionic female artists. I think this is probably the best of the bunch, but it was a toss up between this and my 7th choice. I picked Grimes because when I saw her live, it inspired me a lot) 7. Braids - Native Speaker (Was actually released 2011, but I;m including it here. I didn't music could be so sweet) 8. Burial - Kindred (Just an EP, but wow...did it make an impact. If you sincerely hate most dubstep, you should give this a shot. It might change your mind a bit 9. Four Tet - Pink (I wasn't super impressed the first time I saw this, but wow - the second and third times and every time after just blew me away.) 10 - Julia Holter - Ekstasis (I should have put this higher, because each time I listen to it, it just gets better. You all....will probably hate it. But it's got such an old school IDM vibe. I love it)
  7. I didn't mean to add it twice. The second one should have been "Rise of the Guardians", I'm fixing it now. But...yea Brave was pretty great
  8. 1. Django Unchained 2. Life of Pi 3. Beasts of the Southern Wild 4. John Dies at the End 5. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 6. Brave 7. Cabin in the Woods 8. The Avengers 9. Cloud Atlas 10. Moonrise Kingdom 11. Rise of the Guardians 12. Wreck it Ralph /edit - Accidently put Brave up there twice, hehe.
  9. Welp thanks to NZA and Logans I havn't been able to sleep tonight. Ended up actually checking out the website, which by all accounts existed before the creepypasta was written, and while the videos described in the creepypasta DO exist in some capacity, it's not at all how it's described. That's literally all I can tell you about that site, and I've been combing through the forum and stuff for almost two hours now. Here are the videos on the site: http://normalpornfornormalpeople.com/index.php/video-index Apparently people have been dissecting them for various meanings? I'm going to feel incredibly stupid if that whole site exists solely to troll gullible girls like me :( But if it's real, then it's some of the creepiest stuff I've ever seen.
  10. 2013 is shaping up to be an amazing year for cinema. Also - The Great Gatsby looks like it's going to be incredible. Can't wait to see it. The End looks incredibly silly and fantastic - I love it when actors play themselves in things. I think that's why I love that show Don't Trust the B in Apt 23 - James Vanderbeek plays himself, and he's hilarious at it.
  11. You know...I was kinda surprised he was nominated as supporting actor - he was in almost every scene. I wonder if they intentionally did that so he would be an award contender. I'm almost positive Daniel Day Lewis is going to take best actor in every awards show there is; I don't agree with it, but it was just that sorta role.
  12. http://www.goldenglobes.org/2012/12/nominations-2013/ Curious to know what everyone's thoughts/predictions are for next years' Golden Globes. Tina Fey and Amy Pohler are hosting this year...so it should be pretty funny. Maybe not Ricky Gervais funny...but that's only because he got steadily drunker and meaner as the min ticked by, lol.
  13. So...best movie of the year for me. Hands down. Not saying I didn't love any other movies...but this was everything I hoped it would be and more. /edit - Also, as fantastic as Leo is in this movie, Christoph Waltz nailed it. I mean someone should just go ahead and give him all the awards. Just, all of them.
  14. Going to see Django tonight with my sisters. I stood up at the end of Inglorious Basterds and cheered...I'm hoping this Django has the same effect. Every person I've spoken to who has gone to see it says it's their new favorite Tarantino movie...so I'm thinking it's going to be pretty great
  15. So I tried to add my banner, but it was gigantic. Would someone mind explaining how to make it smaller so I can add it? <3
  16. Awww...thanks everyone <3
  17. Yeah...I was so sad to learn Orson SC is super homophobic. But it makes sense...he's British, and the bad/evil race are the Buggers. It's super sad...here's someone so bright and intelligent and creative, and he can still find reasons to be hateful and scared of people who differ from himself. :(
  18. Please, please tell me you saw the Saturday Night Live 'Homeland' sketch? Every single person nailed their impression of each character. This is one of those things I like to watch whenever I'm having a bad day because it will 100% always put me in a better mood. I dare y'all to watch this and try not to smile
  19. Yes... You folks are right though...the couple of episodes prior to the finale were just lacking in sustenance. The season finale though was just...wow. Super wow.
  20. WAIT wait wait...there is a comic adaptation of "Ender's Game" floating around?! Here's hoping Santa drops some cash in my lap so I can buy it. The book is truly one of the best books ever written. Most good vs. evil stories portray the hero as this other worldly person...no man/woman could ever achieve what he or she accomplished in the archetypal good vs evil showdown . I've been so excited about this movie ever since it was announced. I just hope that the people making the film stay close to the source material, as it's really hard to improve on near perfection. Whoever did the casting looks like they probably nailed it. I'm esp excited to see Harrison Ford (as Graff) and Abigail Breslan (sp?) (Valentine) play their roles. Valentine is arguably the second most important role in the book, and I can't think of a better kid to play that role than Abigail Like you Haku (hehe...rhymes) I was hoping this would be turned into two movies. Oh well though. I'm thinking the people making the movie are afraid folks won't show up to this movie, let alone a sequel. I'm not going to complain though, as I've been hoping and wishing for probably damn near a decade that someone would turn this book into a movie. Sometimes silly wishes do come true
