  1. I mostly read reviews through AV Club these days. Lissette and I settle on a TV show and watch for about an hour every night. This makes it so that we are really picky about what we watch. I used to watch a lot of movies before I got married. I watched a lot less once I got married, but now I watch maybe 3 adult movies a year and a fair number of children's films. I really loved Roger Ebert. I would read his reviews before seeing films. I occasionally will read a NY Times review, but it's not the same.
  2. I bought my first game in quite some time. After looking up lists for best Xbox 360 games of all time, I purchased Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. I bought largely due to a reviewer saying that the controls are really easy and it reminded them of the Fable games. I played it for the first time last night for about 30 minutes and I really enjoyed it. The gameplay is a lot like Fable 2 and 3. I bought new for $15 on Ebay. I have really only played 5 Xbox video games for any length of time in the last time 10 years. I have mixed feelings about that. I'm looking forward to when Nicholas is 7 or 8 and maybe playing video games with him. I do not plan to allow him to play video games until that time if possible.

    Fast Food Porn

I would try that donut ice cream sandwich way before I would try the whopperito. I think it looks tasty. I rarely eat sweets, as I like to save room for booze every night. I generally don't eat fast food very often either. I eat it maybe three or four times a year, depending. I save those times for Five Guys or Shake Shack usually.
  4. I love the Uri Geller picture. I would definitely love to get a drink with you, Haku, and Bindy (or any of you for that matter). They bring up in the show that LSD was used in the MK-ULTRA experiments. That has been documented. In fact, Dr. John Lilly who I mentioned invented the sensory deprivation tank, actually dosed dolphins with LSD in an attempt to communicate with them. People that take psychedelics commonly report 'telepathic' experiences while on the drug. Since Dr. Lilly had taken LSD, I can only assume that this was the reason he gave it to the dolphins. The Nixon administration actually shut down all of the dolphin experiments after some of Lilly's work. I have a very close friend who is a tenured track professor that told me about an experience where he was doing mushrooms and he along with the friends he was tripping with said that they shared a telepathic experience. He said it really freaked them out. I have read in non-conspiracy/historical and psychological texts about these reports. Oddly enough, I'm finishing up reading Peter Levenda's Sinister Forces which talks about all of the projects that have been mentioned so far in this thread. Levenda is probably most famous for being the alleged author of the Simon Necronomicon (he mostly definitely did write it in my opinion). I read his book Unholy Alliance: Nazi Involvement in the Occult some years ago. It is an excellent read that is well footnoted, just as Sinister Forces is. He talks about and documents his trip to Colonial Dignidad in Chile in the 1970s, which was an enclave of escaped Nazis that had setup a small town and worked as torturers for the Pinochet government. The author is almost killed there and is kicked out of the country. When Levenda returns to the U.S., he said that he was met by FBI agents and questioned about his trip. Colonial Dignidad was later written about by other authors and is well documented. Good stuff. I find it funny that I am reading about some of this stuff now from Levenda's book since he so shamelessly took from Lovecraft (the Nec is basically a merging of Lovecraft and ancient Sumerian demons and diety rituals) and there is a Lovecraftian type monster in Stranger Things. I am usually quick to dismiss a lot of the conspiracy theory noise, but Levenda's books are so heavily researched and footnoted that I really like them. Plus, he doesn't necessarily make the leaps of logic that other conspiracy writers make. He presents the info with documentation and leaves it up to the reader to draw their own conclusions. The only conclusion that he puts forth is that there is some sort of non-physical intelligence connected in some way with the things he writes about.
  5. I have went back and forth and whether I should post on this topic. First, I loved the show. It was a lot of fun and very full produced. I would like to talk a little bit about the government projects that they mentioned on the show. They mention MK-ULTRA, which is well known since Congress found out about it during the Nixon administration. While the CIA and other organizations shredded most of the documents on the project, more than 27,000 pages were still obtained by Congress (a small fraction of the total documents on the project). MK-ULTRA was a program investigating mind control, not psychic powers. The sensory deprivation tank was developed by Dr. John Lilly and has uses in this type work. Sensory deprivation can break people psychologically. The most famous test case subject involved in MK-ULTRA was Ted Kaczynski. He was a 16-year-old math major at Harvard and some of the experiments were conducted there by a psychology professor. Before MK-ULTRA, the project was called BLUEBIRD and then ARTICHOKE. This is all heavily documented public knowledge. The majority of the psychic research was called Project Stargate. There have been several books written on Stargate by actual participants in the program. Project Stargate was a multi-decade project. Many of the people that were involved as 'psychics' in the program claimed to encounter extra-dimensional intelligences when they were involved in looking for Soviet targets. In occult terms, the shadow world encountered in the show is more like what is described as the lower "astral," for whatever that is worth. One is said to bleed into the other. If you are interested, in anything in particular I could post more. Anyhow, I think the writers were queuing into these ideas.
  6. Mine was Willy Wonka. His version of Wonka was far and away the best.
  7. Better hope your union is as good as his! Fight the man, Haku, fight the man.
  8. I think he is right as well. I think that the majority people fighting think they are fighting for the United States and freedom, but in reality almost all of the fighting that has gone on post-WWII has been for the benefit of the Military Industrial Complex. I really don't think people should be attacking this guy verbally the way that I think that they probably are. I read an article on Fox News the other day (terrible idea) and I decided to look at the comments page (an even worse idea). I don't think I have been more saddened and disgusted in quite some time. People were saying the most spewing the most vile and repugnant mind vomit that I have read in a very long time. If people don't like what this athlete did, then don't watch him play football. Instead, I bet people are saying vile things which have very little basis in reality. As I don't have social media, I'm only aware of this from NPR news.
  9. I took the family to this. We all really enjoyed it. My son did have a lot of questions after we watched the film though.
  10. I saw a trailer for this and after Axels' review, I think I'm going to take my family to this. Nicholas is four and I think he would like it. I just showed him the music video and he liked it.
  11. I think what resonates with so many people is the archetype of The Dude. In some Zen circles, The Dude is seen as a Zen master. In fact, I have pretty good book titled The Dude and the Zen Master which is a dialogue between Jeff Bridges and Bernie Glassman, who is considered by many to be a true Zen master. I was reading The Geography of Genius for work and a Greek poet who was awarded a MacArthur genius award actually compared Socrates with The Dude. I think that in many ways The Dude resonates with people in a way that they can't always articulate, but it is still way down deep in the Collective Unconscious Mind that just seems to get to many people.
  12. So so awesome. I had to +1 that picture.
  13. I'm not sure if you have read this or not, but Negan in the comic is based on Henry Rollins. Apparently, Rollins also auditioned for the Negan role, but it was given to that other guy. Rollins thought he was a shoe in since the character was based on. I would much rather have seen Rollins playing Negan. I thought the Negan character's dialogue was pretty crumby though. I'm not sure how to use the spoiler function, so I will leave it at that.
  14. HBO just confirmed that they are making a 9th season!
  15. Ha ha ha! Jumbie gave you the perfect setup for that joke. Well done, sir.
  16. I loved your write up. Thanks for sharing this with us. It made me feel like I was there. Those pictures with you, Donatella, and those cosplayers was really cool. I wish I went to more events like this. I'm going to try to go to the Supercon this year. The movie/TV personalities listed as guests looked pretty tight.

Before I read what you wrote, I thought it was Panch too. Nice find.
  18. First off, my heart goes out to the man. From all accounts, finding love in China if you are a male (gay or straight, but for different reasons) is tough. There are millions more men than women in China due to the combination of the One Child Policy and sex-selective abortions. Anti-natalist policies in India over the last two decades have also created a huge gender imbalance there as well. The cities in India with the highest gender imbalances are also the ones that have the worst bouts of civil unrest. I remember reading a few years ago about a company that helped Chinese men important brides from Vietnam due to the sex-ration imbalance that was making it so difficult for Chinese men to find brides. This sort of the activity is only likely to increase in the coming years as long as China remains economically stable. The only way a guy gets a girl to marry him in China is if he owns property and I bet Rubik's Cube Man did not own the apartment he was living in. Unfortunately for many Chinese, property values are sky high due to one of the largest real estate bubbles in human history that is currently in effect in China.
  19. I love that Nathan Raban quote. I almost spit out my coffee while reading it.
  20. I don't think eating one meal per day is a big deal. In fact if done properly, it could have health benefits. For several years I have experimented with intermittent fasting.Years ago I weighed 170 pounds. When I was in college, I weighed between 140-150 until the last year or so. At that point I decided that I wanted to bulk up. I lifted weights and gained muscle and a fair amount of fat. I kept lifting weights for years, but I still had a little bit of fat and I looked better at 140-150. Then I was diagnosed with a heart condition and I had open heart surgery for a congenital defect. I now have a prosthetic aortic heart valve that you can hear ticking in a quiet room. I'm not allowed to lift heavy weights anymore since it puts a lot of pressure on heart valves. I decided to lose the weight after the surgery. I did it primarily through intermittent fasting. Once a week I did a water fast for about 22 hours. I would typically end the fast with a shot of vodka or a beer and then I would eat dinner. I lost 20 pounds, but I was skinny fat. I then got turned on to progressive calisthenics through the book Convict Conditioning. I have been practicing calisthenics for the past 2 1/2 years and I still enjoy it. I focus on different types of pull-ups, chin-ups, pushups, hanging knee raises (or leg), squats, and bridges. I do most of my working out at home or in the park. I'm in pretty decent shape now and I weigh between 145-150 with maybe 10-12% body fat. I have read a tremendous amount on diet and exercise. Besides books, I particularly enjoy reading the NY Times health section and various medical and scientific journals. I don't focus on macros. I focus on eating enough fiber and unprocessed foods. My diet is pretty simple, although I experiment with it all the time. I basically try to eat nutritious foods. My breakfast: 2 cups of coffee with a cup of whole milk and a little cream (no sugar or sweeteners) a few strawberries (like a handful) Midmorning snack: an apple 2 cups of high quality black tea (no sweeteners) Lunch: Lentil or some kind of bean soup or a peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat a small amount of plain whole milk yogurt a banana Afternoon Snack: 2 cups of coffee with a cup of whole milk (no sweeteners) Dinner: This meal varies a lot and I don't really watch it too carefully as long as I don't eat too much. I try to make sure that it has a fair amount of vegetables and other fibrous foods. I might eat meat at dinner once a week on average. After Dinner Snack: one shot and one beer (I find that drinking has no effect on my percentage of body fat) I have done a few longer term experiments on my diet. Including 16/8 intermittent fasting and mimicking the diet of ancient Roman gladiators. If you want I can share the details in a future post.

    Vagina beer

I don't think this would produce much alcohol unless she had a yeast infection. Lactic acid bacteria do not make alcohol to my knowledge. I can't believe I responded to this.
  22. Before I saw that this was in the VG section, I thought this was an article about Miami being reclaimed by the ocean.
  23. Curb is my favorite comedy show of all time. The first two seasons aren't great though. It doesn't become awesome until about season 3. The first episode that really did it for me was when Larry is pretending to be a WASP Republican so that he can become a member of an exclusive white country club. The part in the episode where he picks up that prostitute so that he can drive in the carpool lane is golden.
