I've heard shitty rock bands from the 80's, whose names, for obvious reasons, I fail to remember, and I've heard Megadeth. They sound similar to my "untrained" ear, make sense? Point you to them? I've also explained I can't name any bands that are hard rock or 80's shit that sound like them because I don't like Megadeth or anything that would sound remotely similar. Your list contains some true gems (Therion, Eluvitie, At the Gates, Dissection, Emperor, etc) but you also have a predominate "old-school" theme going there. I still don't think Megadeth are metal but I now understand why you think so. But could you name some more bands? Maybe bands I might like? I tried to explain why Dave's vocals make Megadeth not a metal band to me. There is not much more I can say. If, as you say, Megadeth are a metal band, then they are one of the shittiest examples of metal I have ever heard. I'll stick to my own shitty metal and be content knowing Megadeth will never curse my hard drive with their filth. And if you don't want to call Morbid Angel metal cause you don't find as much feeling with David's vocals that is your prerogative. I concede without Dave they are metal. At least some earlier shit I've listened to (again recently). But for me Dave ruins that. He is what makes me think of them as merely hard rock. To me there is no feeling behind the vocals. He is trying to be something he isn't and it shows. True metal strikes me deep within my soul. It resonates with me and I can feel something I can't really put into words. It is moving to me, much in the same way people are moved by a movie or a story, or whatever people are affected by. Megadeth has never elicited these feelings so I don't consider them metal. Dave's singing is so offsetting it ruins anything the rest of the band is trying to do. At least with a band like Circle II Circle you can sense feeling behind him singing. Dave lacks the essence of being metal and degrades his band because of it in my eyes. As for citing some bands, I don't know any. I never sat down and listened all the way through to RIP, or Peace Sells or shitty 80's rock bands. But every city I've ever lived in (Austin, San Antonio, Dallas) have had their Saturday night metal shows and they've all played Megadeth at some point in time or another. It never struck me as metal back then and I often wondered why they played it. I just figured it was a way to get people in to listen to the real stuff. Even if Megadeth did 300bpm Blast Beats with guitars tuned down 2.5 steps and sang about being satan's instruments of unholy destruction, as long as Dave still sang the way he does now, they still wouldn't be metal.

They're more commercial than 99% of the bands I listen to. But that really isn't the point. To me they sound like processed, generic, commercial crap. I like NIN, well everything up to The Fragile, just someone asked for a well known band and some lyrics, so i assumed a culturally agreed upon definition of what was good would suffice as justification. But back to Megadeth and how bad they are. I gotta say if you defend Megadeth as metal you don't know what you're talking about, IMO. It's all a matter of opinion though, I just think if you're gonna listen to the heavy shit, why not the heaviest shit out there? Heh, didn't read all the posts. I apologize for being redundant, let's just say you make a good point. But still I don't think Megadeth is metal. Can't say I have sat and listened to all their albums all the way through but what I have heard doesn't strike me as metal. Plus I had to play that goddamned Symphony of Destruction song on Rock Band (or Guitar hero, they all kinda mesh together after a while) so many times I am sick of them just for that. Ok, I just can't stand Mustaine's voice. As for Mortiis the band (or man) I like his darkwave albums. His goth/rock/techno doesn't really grab me, I'll just listen to NIN if I want to hear that kind of stuff. Which reminds me of profound metal lyrics. NIN - Broken, the song "Wish." He won a grammy for it so it must be profound.

I personally hate when a band takes up some bullshit cause and writes all their songs about it. Earth Crisis comes to mind but they had shitty music anyways. Do you all just only read non-fiction books or something? The music is what makes metal. The vocalist is just there as another instrument. I listen to the more "extreme" sub-genres and I couldn't tell you what 1/10th the words to the songs are. Hell a lot of them aren't even in English. So get over this little 14-year old girl obession about being able to identify with the singer and actually appreciate the music for the quality of the sound and not what the people stand for. If you want that there are a billion souless pop-rock albums out there you can identify with to your hearts content. And also don't listen to metal if you don't want hard, heavy, fast music. I know that would seem like a "duh" statement but somehow shit like Slipknot and Lacuna Coil get thrown into the metal category cause they have a few songs where they used distortion. OMG! Part of metal, for me at least, IS the fantastical lyrics and the songs of eating fetuses or killing in the name of Wotan. But there is profundity in metal, you have to look but it is there.
