  10. Top Story ---------------------- 37 Record-Store Clerks Feared Dead In Yo La Tengo Concert Disaster ATHENS, GA— Thirty-seven record-store clerks are missing and feared dead in the aftermath of a partial roof collapse during a Yo La Tengo concert Monday. :scared: the onion
  11. Wow. She's pretty an' all, but can she sing? I gotta go with Nick. After I saw that belly move, i'm a sucker for that Shakira girl. Ok, ok, so i like her album, too. But don't get me wrong. if I could look like kylie, I'd volunteer. she's hot. then i'd really have a use for this armor.
  12. Ok, so I found two other pantheons with music deities: Egytian and Aztec. But I bet you can't pronounce them either. Ihy In Egyptian mythology, the son of Hathor, who was worshipped in Dendera with her and Horus-Behdety. Like his mother, Ihy was a god of music and dancing, and was always depicted as a child bearing a sistrum. Macuilxochitl 'Five Flower'. The Aztec god of music and dance. It is actually another name for Xochipilli. Xochipilli Xochipilli ("Flower Prince") is the Aztec god of flowers, maize, love, games, beauty, song and dance. He is the husband of Mayahuel and the twin brother of Xochiquetzal. He is also referred to as Macuilxochitl, which means "five flowers". Xochipilli is depicted with a stick of which the sharp tip penetrates a human heart. Oh, and check this out: A Lakota Indian myth, I think. Big Twisted Flute A cedar carved, five stop (finger holes) flute in the shape of a twisted headless horse said to possess magical power. When played it evokes a powerful love charm to entice a mate. The shaman composed exclusive music for it. These flutes generated a haunting melody, difficult to resist. Maybe we should just call the music forum "Big Twisted Flute" Heehee. Ok, back to webresearching.
  13. Yeah, stupid americans. Just like us to ruin a perfectly good forum name by corrupting it with TV. Anyway, helios is the god of the sun, but his origins are from outside of greece, even though he is a member of the greek pantheon. Apollo is the god of light, true. however, he is so often associated with the sun that helios is often overshadowed by apollo. (forgive my noncapitalization... yahve's shift key is finicky). But yeah, cool. You're right. I had to look in different references. a couple of places had Apollo pegged as sun god, but I finally found one that had more than two sentences about him, and they call him the god of music and light. Interesting.
  14. ok, so I checked on Apollo. Yeah, principally, he's the god of the sun, but he is also credited along with the muses for the presences of harpers and minstrels upon the earth in Hesiod. So, yeah, Apollo could be a pretty good benefactor for this forum. But I think we should avoid the "Live at the Apollo" reference, personally. I think it covers too broad an area of popular culture to really focus well on music. We need something more music-specific. Apollo would make a good patron. Any other Apollo-related ideas? Any other music deities? Anyone? Anyone?
  15. I'm not sure about the Apollo reference. I'm pretty sure his main role is as God of the Sun. besides that, isn't "Live at the 'Apollo'" more famous as a late-night comedy showcase, not a music scene? I'll double check on the Apollo thing and get back to you. Basically, music is a bad subject to try to get away from the greek pantheon on. The greek mythology is the only one that actually has a well-known arts/music component (i.e. the Nine Muses). If you really want to go for a deity associated with music, we'd better choose a muse from the Greek pantheon. Otherwise, we're just going to have to make something stretch.
  16. How about; "Nest of Maya's Minstrels" Maya is the Vedic Goddess of the illusion, perception, change. What better patron goddess could there be for the turbulent world of modern music? Isn't music itself a fine weaving of poetry and aural illusion? Anyway, I think it's better than "Musicians Anonymous." Any other suggestions?
  17. Thanks for the help. Actually, I think I'm probably going to get it online. Which one would you get first if you could only choose one? I'm taking an informal poll!
  18. I had a birthday recently, and for the first time in years, people actually gave me money. I have birthday money! Woohoo! And i want to spend it on Anime. but how do I get the most bang for my buck? I'm looking at: * Cowboy Bebop - 6 disk Coll.'s Ed. box set (about the same price as the seperate discs) * Serial Experiments Lain - 4 disk set or 4 seperate disks(oddly cheaper seperately) * Ranma 1/2 1st season box set (4 DVDs) (pretty cheap compared to the VHS prices) *Fushigi Yugi - 2nd season- on VHS if I can find it, or DVD maybe, but the box set is so overpriced. So? Any suggestions? I love bebop. Really love it. So it ranks sentimentally. lain is a series I started watching but never finished, and no one in vista verde has been very helpful with that so far, so I may have to buy it if I ever want to see the end. Ranma I've read the first ten manga volumes of, so it would be nice to have, but may be repetitious. Fushigi Yugi I have the 1st season VHS box set, so I'll want to see the second season soon, but I'm not sure I want to spend 200 bucks on the dvd box set. Anyone know any good online places to shop for anime? Thanks!
  19. There's something just not right in this pic ..... can YOU tell what it is? http://www.dtig.de/whatswrong/ http://www.stonetable.org/files/whatswrong.swf If you can't figure it out after 20 seconds, turn up the volume... there's a hint playing in the background. If you can find it in less than 30 seconds - that's impressive.

Hey Irish, I'd totally offer you a ride to the concert if I were going, cause i've thought about it, but the funds is the problem here too. still tempted... but i've got a test the nest day in a clas I joined three weeks late, so I'm thinking it's not the best idea, eh?
  21. Gotta go with MickeyD. I'd be betraying the picture of myself when I was three years old wearing a mcDonald's jersey (that's as nig as I am0 that hanging in the office of the management office my mom works at. of course, that office is the base for the company that owns about 25 Mcdonald's stores, but hey, I never said I wasn't biased! Whoppers are pretty good, but BK seems to fall short on most everything else. Did you know that the McDonald's stores in Maine serve LOBSTER fritters on their regular menu? And that they have had test markets for McPizza, tacos, crab cakes...? ...pretty much anything you can think of, they've thought of it and tested it somewhere. It's a cool company. Besides that, they always try to keep a nice, clean image, and I respect that. Oh yeah, that and...mmmm....McDonald's fries... Is it bad if you mainline them?
  22. I wanted to list a bunch of teeny tiny cartoon sidekicks, but I couldn't remember enough of 'em. Is that little guy with colorful ears in She Ra named Kowl? Any other memorable short guys?
