So many songs that I will never ever forget. With a few exceptions game music isn't what it used to be, much of the reason being that music now blends into a whole soundscape much of the time, up through the PS1 era we didn't have the processing power to do the sick sound direction that we have now. So music had to fill in the gaps to create the mood. The early 1990s to the early 200s is probably the era of the best game music ever. I'll probably do some more of these, but to start I'll probably go with my favorite composer at the time Yasunori Mitsuda, the man was a beast, the composed Chrono Trigger right out of high school, and has created 3 of the best OSTs of the 1990s.

Chrono Cross:

Anyone who knows me knows I think that this guy is a GM god. Cross is likely his best OST, and that is really saying something.

Everyone know's Time's Scar, because it is amazing, not everyone remembers the rest of the OST, say what you will about the rest of the game, the music was amazing. I mean seriously, if at the end of the game you didn't get a little verklempt when you heard Radical Dreamers - The Recovered Jewel you have no soul.

Xenogears:

Ok, lotsa Mistuda love, but these really blew most other games out of the water soundtrack wise. Xenogears is a great progression from what he was doing in Chrono Trigger, and many of the techniques that Mitsuda used would come up again later. I picked the main theme, The Chain of Sea and Fire, the boss music Awakening, and Premoniton ,the tower of Babel theme. Xenogears' only fault in the soundtrack department is that the sound programming was not as good as it could have been, listen to the difference in sample between this and Chrono Chross, they quality of the samples is leagues apart.

Ok, what got me into anime? Well, when I was like 5 or 6 I had a few memories of particular shows, though I couldn't attach them to anything, the first of these was of a guy in a transforming plane that couldn't pilot it, the second was of everyone crying because some guy had died (didn't remember who the character was at the time, anyone who has seen Macross will know who I mean), and another one set in space where some guy's brother bit it.

It wasn't until years later that I found out what those series were. The first two were of course Robotech, which I found again through the RPG and Novels (tapes were not for sale back then), and the second I much later found out was Ulysses 31, a series that i have still not seen to this day.

But anyhow, after devouring all the Robotech I could find, (6 Macross Saga movies, each cut down from about 130 minutes to about 100) I remember reading SOMEWHERE that there was a movie called Akira that was supposed to be amazing. One day I found it at a Suncoast Pictures for $29.99 for the VHS dub. I bought that shit with a quickness, took it home, and it blew my 13 year old mind. Not only was the animation amazing. It also had blood, nudity, and a dark bleak story. At 13 the blood and nudity stood out, so I took it to a friend's place to sow him. We are both still Anime fans to this day.

As for what I consider essential viewing? That's kinda tough.

Got my Tenchi DVD 3 for cheap (15, goes for around 40-90 online), and am now trying to get my hands on Gunbuster and Maison, doubt i'll ever find that one for cheap though.

What's with all the hate for Chrono Cross? It was great RPG, different as hell from anything out there, and had one of the best soundtracks of all time. It also had some of the best dungeons ever in an RPG, a great story, and did I mention the soundtrack? As a sequel to Chrono Trigger it didn't quite work, a bit too different in art direction and gameplay, but it was one of the best RPGs of the time, and is still pretty good.

Of course playing ANY PS1 non sprite game on a big HDTV is going to look like ass. That's why I love my psp.

This is a really obscure song, by an obscure group, it was only on their very first album, which never got a wide release, only 3-5,000 of these were pressed. A version of it was on the American Werewolf in London OST, or something like that.

I still say that that has to be one of the cruelest double features of all time. I mean hell, it's be like playing the Incredibles before Schindler's List.

Still, I take a bit of umbrage at the 360 exclusive RPGs not being very good. I specifically have to say that Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon were great, if decidedly old school. Blue Dragon was a pretty impressive DQ style RPG, and Lost Odyssey was a VERY well put together game, with a great storyline, combat, and characters. Newt's been itching to dump every bit of hate he could on the 360, but hey, I got some good games off him for cheap, so no skin off my back.

For all the shit I give it, the PS3 is a great piece of hardware with some great exclusives. I prefer the exclusives on the 360, but that's personal preference. I prefer XBL over PSN, payment be damned, and I've bought about 10x as many games on 360 as PS3.

At first I thought Newt didn't like shooters, mainly because he hated on Halo and Gears so very much. 360, especially early one excelled at them. Then I saw him buying Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 the second they came out, so I guess that shit is out.

I still argue that he's been looking for reasons to hate on that thing for years now.

Well, I thought it might be a good idea to get this thread going again mainly because of some discussions Nick and I were having last night. Ghibli has made some incredible films, and it's a shame that some of them fall through the cracks. Of the less popular ones I'd probably have to give a shout out to

are often overlooked, and are just amazing. Ghibli films always stand out to be as films with an amazing amount of heart, and (with one major exception) leave you feeling great after watching them. Whisper is different form what we usually think of with Ghibli, but it is really a hell of a film.

I still hope we one day get releases of Only Yesterday and I can hear the Ocean, but I'm not hopeful.

Who's next?

Well, I like a lot of the strengths of country, good storytelling, great imagery, and often a great sense of irreverence, but once it passes a certain point I just cease enjoying it. I do think I am often hung up on the heavy southern drawl in some songs, it's weird, I can deal with a bit just fine, but I reach a threshold that I can't quite quantify and it all goes to shit.

Props on the two songs that Nick picked as those are two of the three country songs I love without exception. The third is this one, which again if you don't like, you have no soul.

RCPM - Americano!

I've decided to start downloading anime again (I have a binder with just over 500 dvd's of burned mkv/ogm's), and I have been out of the game since about 2006.

 

Some of my favorite series' were, Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Jungle Waa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu, Lain, Orochuban Ebichu (everyone should see this), Slayers, Super Radical Gag Family.

 

That being said can anyone recommend any newer (or older) series that are good? Specifically stuff that Best Buy doesn't sell, I've pretty well picked over everything they have already.

Hmm, have to shout out Black Lagoon even if BB does carry it. Really really good series. Um, I'm also hearing good things about Bakkano, but I haven't seen it yet, and was told to check it out without reading about it. I think Funimation has the first couple of episodes on their website.

Also, by your tastes I'd recommend Azumanga Daioh, it is comedy awesomeness distilled into half hour episodes. And cheap as hell to boot.

Don't follow fansubs much anymore, if I have them it's usually stuff that will likely never come here (Macross) or so incredibly out of print it don't matter.
