Who should play the next James Bond? The Hollywood Reporter has the latest inside skinny on the search for the next James Bond. With Casino Royale now being rewritten by Paul Haggis and a January start date looming, the filmmakers have yet to find a replacement for Pierce Brosnan, whom the article says was dropped over his "usurious" salary demands. The trade spoke with insiders who desired anonymity. The gist is that producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, as well as MGM's new owner Sony and Royale director Martin Campbell, can't agree on who should take over the role of 007. According to THR's sources, Clive Owen turned Campbell down flat, opting to parody Bond in The Pink Panther remake instead. Broccoli championed oft-reported contender Daniel Craig but Wilson was cool to him. Eric Bana was deemed not handsome enough, Hugh Jackman too fey, Colin Farrell too sleazy and Ewan McGregor too short. As for the reported "final four" contenders – Goran Visnjic, Alex O'Lachlan, Henry Cavill and Ewan Stewart – apparently their screen tests must not have wowed the powers-that-be as the hunt continues. (Stewart's reps insist that, despite numerous reports to the contrary, he never actually tested.) Fantastic Four's Julian McMahon, at one point all but anointed as the next Bond, reportedly alienated himself by doing an overly self-promotional, Bond-esque photo shoot for Angeleno Modern Luxury magazine, complete with the headline "Licence to Thrill." McMahon never ended up doing a screen test. "They said they wanted the next generation's James Bond," one candidate's rep advised THR. "Someone the younger audience could relate to." In other words, the filmmakers seem to want a variation of Matt Damon's Jason Bourne. The trick is to bring in younger viewers without alienating die-hard Bond fans or violating the spirit of the character. THR did drop some interesting names as to who might be in the running now for the role, among them: Karl Urban (LOTR, The Bourne Supremacy); David Morrissey (who Sharon Stone OK'd as her male lead in Basic Instinct 2); Rufus Sewell (soon to be seen in Campbell's The Legend of Zorro); Rupert Friend and Matthew MacFadyen (who co-starred together opposite Die Another Day's Rosamund Pike in Pride and Prejudice); Jason O'Mara (the TV series The Agency); Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean and who co-starred opposite John "Q" Cleese in Fierce Creatures); and James Purefoy (HBO's Rome and more recently noteworthy for being replaced in V for Vendetta). Officially, the search for the new 007 continues. "There is no pending announcement," Bond spokeswoman Ann Bennett informed the paper.
