The first three books serve as prequels to the status quo of the later ones. Keith, if you really want to do this up proper I recommend Lansdale's first book Act of Love. It's pretty amateurish and a little dumb but it's pretty short and the main character becomes a mainstay in the Hap & Leonard books after the first few.
