Limbs are hacked off, heads are crushed, necks are snapped, bowels are removed, and human bodies are transformed into broken piles of red wreckage. Just when you think Tjahjanto has run out of ways to stage human beings decimating each other, he changes location, and introduces a new collection of weapons and a fresh batch of bad guys. Human life has never mattered less than it does in The Night Comes For Us – some fight scenes, some death scenes, boggle the mind in their staging and make you wonder just how this movie was made without actually murdering a couple dozen Indonesian stunt performers.

The obvious point of reference for The Night Comes for Us will be The Raid. That makes sense given its cast (Iko Uwais - who also did fight choreography - and Joe Taslim). But it’s also an unsatisfying frame of mind for what’s really going down here.

Yes, like The Raid it is a tough action film from Indonesia with a simple plot that unfolds over a very short amount of time. Yes, it offers a few familiar faces. But underneath all that, its gnarly, mischievous soul has more in common with Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive, a film that exists solely to pelt you with relentless inventive gore and escalation. I’ve always considered The Raid a serious action film. The Night Comes for Us is way more like a (super, super great) splatter cartoon.

We came here for action; director Timo Tjahjanto knows it and gets to the business of destroying skulls as fast as he can.

And man, does he destroy a lot of skulls. There are multiple scenes where Joe Taslim takes out whole rooms of people, each death a choreography and special effects opportunity the film takes full advantage of. Such a thing might get old for a while, but The Night Comes to Us’ most valuable weapon is its gleeful enthusiasm for variety and gore. You’re always about five seconds from the film’s best new kill. It’s immature, but it’s also masterful. And for kids who always wondered what the last act of Commandowould look like with more blood and action choreography, it’s a dream come true.

It may lack The Raid: Redemption‘s narrative simplicity and The Raid 2‘s gorgeous cinematography, but in specific regard to the action, momentum, and beautiful, bone-breaking fight sequences this is a blistering and aggressively thrilling action masterpiece. Your own muscles will ache while watching it as you tense in anticipation, excitement, and sympathy for the brutal beatings you’re witnessing on the screen. No real body could take this kind of abuse for very long — hell, I’m pretty confident that any one of these hits would end me — but while most opponents are dispatched quickly and painfully there are a few brawls that go the distance including a third act face-off of epic proportions. Tjahjanto knows it’s insane, but he plays it serious and pushes his two leads to nearly absurd extremes in a fight that rivals any of the one-on-one fights in Gareth Evans’ films.

Ok so this was good! Definitely feels like a spirtual successor to The Raid films. The blood is a really bright red, I think to make the extreme violence easier to watch, but even then... Oof. Had me squinting a few times.
