The Aviator

Recommended Posts

Well, it looks like Scorsese's finally gonna get best picture, best director and all that. The Aviator is great. Amazing cast, insanely good cinematography, it's really one of the best biopics I've seen.

It's the story of Howard Hughes, the infinately wealthy filmmaker and well... aviator. Long story short, he does extravegant things with his money and ends up going crazy from major OCD type symptoms.

THe film never tells you how to feel about the guy, you just see him do crazy shit and you can like him, hate him or feel sorry for him. It definately works. Decaprio is great as young idealistic hughes and older krazy hughes. The rest of the cast is almost too good. You'll spend a lot of the movie wondering who the next cameo will be by. Cate blanchett absolutely steals the fucking show though. She plays Katheryn Hephurn and knocks it out of the park. It's a role that easily could have sliped into parody but she does a fantastic job. Best supporting actress for sure.

Oh, and I'll take the space of this review to say that Robert Richardson is a god amongst men. He is by far the best cinematographer alive. He's been workign with Oliver Stone for most of his career but he also did Casino, Bringing out the dead, and Kill Bill. He's half the reason The Aviator was so good and at this point I'll watch anything this guy is the cinematographer for.

Now, when I say this is best picture, it doesnt mean it's the best movie of the year, it's up there, and I really liked it, but I just mean it's gonna win best picture. It's an epic period peice biopic with a big ensemble cast and an established director, it has oscar written all over it.

It is very good though, it did what few of these types of movies have ever done to me, which is actually make me interested in it's subject, I'd really like to know more about this guy.

I saw this movie on Christmas night...

My thoughts: I really enjoyed it. It was spectacular with the visuals and the stories...I agree with Junker, it made me want to know more about this guy. The cast was great. Cate blanchett was amazing, Kate beckinsale, beautiful.

The only thing that bothered me was the lenght of the movie, but then again, that was my fault. I'm the dumbass who went to a midnight showing of a Scorsese film when I had to be up at 6am the next day for work...2 hours of sleep is no fun, but oh well...

Good movie, make it a point to watch it.
