Jumbie Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 DoJ posted Rolling Stone's top 100 guitarists and as far as I can tell there was only one female there, Joan Jett at 87. Are women really that bad at guitar or was there selection bias? Who are the women guitar players that rock? That you respect? Are there any out there?
Jables Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 There're a fair few all-girl groups(The spazzys, The Donnas, The Spice Girls) who I guess by simple physics would have to play guitar. No solo artists come to mind though , other than hippies- but they hardly count as people let alone artists. Chick guitarists intimidate me anyways- they think they're so much better than me, so much more dexterous. I'm more about bass-playing chicks. I swear I've fucked some absolute gargoyles while they held a bass guitar & I don't regret it, not even a little bit.
La Lindsay Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 joni mitchell's on there too at 72(?). but yeah, there's a severe lack of women... but i don't think it's rolling stone's fault. i think it might have more to do with the fact that more men than women play (or are encouraged to play) the guitar.
Jables Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 ... Because they're showy bitches! Can I get an Amen?
Reverend Jax Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 Sheryl Crow plays the guitar alright. Nancy Wilson of Heart is a guitar player worthy of being up there with the big boys., adn her sister Ann Wilson ain't bad either. Their omittion from the list is pretty lame. Listen to Crazy on You and tell me I'm wrong. Benatar ain't to bad either. Ani DiFranco is also quite good. But yeah, not so many womens on the guitar. It's alot of work for something that don't really help them get laid nearly as much as it does for men.
the division of joy Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 i'm still furious with that top 100 list... its beyond wrong!
Reverend Jax Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 i'm still furious with that top 100 list... its beyond wrong! Nancy Wilson playing Crazy On You with Heart. the division of joy Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 lol... i am a fan of the fact dwayne allman is number two... that guy is brilliant
Reverend Jax Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 Agreed. I need to pick up the Derek & The Dominoes album. I also think Zappa is too low on the list.
Jumbie Posted November 18, 2006 Author Posted November 18, 2006 Don't the dixie chicks play their own guitars? I don't know their music so maybe one of you can tell me if theyre any good. Skeeter: The Spice Girls? ::snicker:: I doubt any of them know which end of a guitar to hold. ------------------------------------ Nancy Wilson of Heart. Definitely deserves to be on that list. Does Shirley Manson (Garbage) play her own guitar or is he only vocals? As for Angus Young... I love ACDC, but what's that joke? "One band, three chords, 1000 songs"
Reverend Jax Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Don't the dixie chicks play their own guitars? I don't know their music so maybe one of you can tell me if theyre any good. At least two of them play guitar, but nothing particularly noteworthy. One of them plays the fiddle. Does Shirley Manson (Garbage) play her own guitar or is he only vocals? Oh...the omition of a single "s" never sounds to funny in my mind. Seriously, her voice isn't that deep. As for Angus Young... I love ACDC, but what's that joke? "One band, three cords, 1000 songs" ACDC isn't a three chord band. Maybe they have three chord riffs (I wouldn't have their riffs any other way), but Angus' solos are blisteringly fast and all over the neck of the guitar. Also, you can have 20 capable guitarist play an ACDC riff and it would never sound as good as it does form Angus' guitar.
Jumbie Posted November 18, 2006 Author Posted November 18, 2006 the s/he was a typos Jax. And you still didn't answer the question
Reverend Jax Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 I know, but sometimes typos are funny. The answer to your question is "I don't know for sure, but I think she does not play guittar." I have a vague memory of a Garbage video in whihc the other members played and she sang withotu guitar, but it's fuzzy. It might have been the Cranberries.
