Panch Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 Magic City Part Mad Men, part Goodfellas/Casino, Magic City is set in the 1959 Miami Beach hotel industry. Watchmen's Jeffery Dean Morgan stars as the owner of Miami's most glamorous hotel, but dealings with mobsters threatens his business... and his life. I've been wanting to watch this show for a while and finally sat down and caught a few episodes. While it's no Mad Men, it's still pretty damn good with enough sex and violence to keep me intrigued. The characters and story are pretty good, too. Quote
Reverend Jax Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 Watchmen's Jeffery Dean Morgan stars as the owner of Miami's most glamorous hotel, How early in the series does he die? Quote
Panch Posted June 5, 2013 Author Posted June 5, 2013 First five minutes. He gets thrown from a window. Kidding. Seriously, check this show out. Quote
Panch Posted June 6, 2013 Author Posted June 6, 2013 Wow, this show is damn good. One episode left of season 1. Quote
Jables Posted June 13, 2013 Posted June 13, 2013 Your invocation of Goodfellas & Casino intrigue me. Aside from vintage mobster, how does this compare to something Scorcese's done? Quote
Panch Posted June 13, 2013 Author Posted June 13, 2013 This villain is one of the scariest on tv. While cinematically it's not Scorcese, some scenes don't seem to belong on the small screen. And that's the charm. It feels like you're watching a movie sometimes. The only flaw is that the first half of the season is quite predictable. The second half though... makes up for it with downright edge of your seat craziness. Quote
Panch Posted June 14, 2013 Author Posted June 14, 2013 Let me know what you think. Second season starts today. Quote
Panch Posted August 6, 2013 Author Posted August 6, 2013 Starz cancels Magic City after just two seasons. Bullshit. I blame all of you! It is the end of the road for Starz‘s Magic City. The pay cable network has opted not to order a third season of the period drama, with the Season 2 finale on Friday serving as a series finale. Magic City, which chronicled the collision of mobsters, politicians and entertainers at a posh Miami hotel in 1959, just as Fidel Castro took control of Cuba, was created by Mitch Glazer based his own recollection of growing up in Miami. “We are tremendously proud of the series and everyone involved,” Starz said in a statement. “From the writers, to the cast and crew, it has been an incredible collaboration. This was a story born from Mitch Glazer’s singular vision of Miami, the Magic City of his childhood, and we are grateful to him for bringing it to life on Starz. The season’s story arc will allow us to deliver a satisfying conclusion to the series, and we thank all the fans who checked in to the Miramar Playa.” At TCA last month, Starz CEO Chris Albrecht teased that the last few episodes of the show contain a lot of surprises that will answer questions.Like with all of its shows, Starz ordered Magic City straight to series. Showing faith in the the Jeffrey Dean Morgan-toplined period drama, the pay cable networkordered a second season before the series premiere. Starz has been patient with most of its series, providing creators with two-season arcs to realize their vision. But, despite a significant marketing campaign and buzzy guest castings — including a James Caan arc in Season 2 — Magic Cityreceived little critical attention and did not grow its audience in the second season, something networks want to see, especially on a pricey show like Magic City, which Starz also produces. Dammit. Quote
