The job keeps you involved in society in a somewhat normal way, as opposed to your only contact with other humans being beating the crap out of them for breaking the law.
I kind of feel that the "day job" helps to keep the hero grounded and sane. Of course, it does come with it's own sanity-stretching problems (as mentioned), but still...
