  1. anyone looking for a copy of Disgaea you can find a copy at GameQuest Direct apparently this company is reprinting rare games and selling them new at regular price instead of the HUGE markup you'd pay for a used one on Ebay. They have also reprinted Rez, Gitaroo Man, Persona 2, and others. Rumor has it that some other hard to find games will get reprints as well, I hope there is one for Suikoden II as I was never able to get my hands on it and it sells on Ebay for a nut and a half.
  2. Sounds like fun, would ther be any room in vehicles heading up there?
  3. Well, start off with Resident Evil 5 for the 360 (and later PS3) RE5 Can't find video for this one, but I've played the demo and it looks amazing, Fight Night Round 3 for the 360: Next is [eM] Enchant Arm, I really hope this one comes out over here as it is looking pretty sweet. Not as nice as the Mistwalker Games (which no one here seems to care about.) but pretty cool nontheless. trailer
  4. Honestly, the best thing in the next gen for the system (other than the graphics, which, BTW have ALWAYS been the big thing about the next generation of game systems.) The Xbox live functionality is just amazing, even better than it was back on the original. I especially love Xbox live arcade, being able to download demos of both old school, and new, fun little games, and then buy them for about $5 is just great. Geometry wars is so unbelieveably fun it's just insane. I've been playing the hell out of this system since I picked it up. Perfect Dark is a blast, even more so online (feels alot like Golden Eye.). Dead or Alive 4 is a friggen blast, and again the online is a hella lot of fun. Call of Duty 2, well, I have never been a fan of WWII shooters, but this one just pulls everything off so well, that it is just amazing, frentic and tense. I also have Condemned which is best described as a first-person survival horror. It is tense, creepy, and looks incredible. The graphics are a lot of what pulls you in, along with the great lighting, sound, and genuine creep factor. The places you go through feel pretty damn real. It's the small things I am loving, the wireless controllers you can power the system on and off with, the ability to chat with a friend when we are playing to completely seperate games, being able to toss my own soundtrack into any game (though there are only a few I do that for), easy access to demos online, an integrated friends list, and a host of other great features. Looking towards the future, the real next-gen meat is coming, Prey looks amazing, Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon have me excited as hell, and when they come out, I'll probably still be chugging away at Oblivion. I think the system has had a great launch thus far, not as nice as the dreamcast's but better than the PS2's by a friggen mile. I do have to ask though, is what do you all expect out of a next generation system? I hear people always saying, it's the same games only prettier, and well, in some ways that is true I suppose, but it has alwyas been that way. Are you expecting a sytem that will provide you with midget hookers whenever you want? I mean, when the SNES hit, it was well, a prettier NES, it had more power under the hood, and while scaling was shiny and new, it allowed for much more complex titles down the line. The only real launches I felt had a huge inititial impact were the launches of the Saturn and PS1, which had the 3-d wow factor and opened up things in a way that was immediately visible. And hell, even some of the stuff that they pulled off had been done on the SNES and Genesis. The gen after that, well, it set things up to how we have them now. The N64 evolved things a bit, dreamcast was amazing, but it was honestly just prettier, PS2 killed even with horrible games at launch, the Xbox and GC again upped the graphical ante. It's just how it works. The Rev may shake things up with its controller, and I hope it does, Nintendo has already stated that they are trying to back away from the HD game, and we'll see where that takes them. PS3 is banking entirely on graphics. As far as being rushed, well, that's probably true, then again the onptions they would be left with would be launching against the PS3 which would be suicide, or launching after it, which didn't work for them last time. So they made a bet on being first. We'll see what happens.
  5. Yeah, because the 360, doesn't play CDs and DVDs either, oh wait, it does. Please the hype on the PS3 is absolutely ridiculous. Sony has this tendency of promising the world and under delivering. I remember the whole PS2 is going to have Toy Story graphics BS. People buying heavily into that hype was part of what killed the DC (amoung a host of other problems.) Yeah the backwards compatibility is nice, but word is, that they are having problems with it currently, and it may not be as full as people would like whenever the PS3 actually launches. Which is looking like fall over here at the earliest. Devs are saying that it just isn't ready for a spring release. The thing will have games I will want, no doubt, and I'll probably grab one for MGS4. Then again it is about the games in the end. And, in the generation leading up to this new one, the Xbox impressed me more than any of the other systems. Not only did it have the quirky Sega games, it also had some of the best developed western titles on the market. The games coming for the 360 impress the hell out of me as well. I enjoy it, I think that other people will as well, problem is there are a bunch of people who won't even give MS a chance due to I dunno, console snobbery or something. Then again, I have always been a fan of the scrappy underdog.
  6. Nah, it means the original metal gear games. Metal Gear first came out for MSX, and it got ported (rather badly) to the NES. Pretty dope game in the original version, though I never could kill Metal Gear at the end of it. Metal Gear: Solid Snake was the sequel, it also came out for the MSX, and never got ported at all to the NES/Famicom. Instead in the US we got Snake's Revenge, which was, an abomination. Anyhow, MGS1 was a sequel to Solid Snake. It will be good to get an american translation of that one finally, as it has the introduction of Grey Fox, and some other MGS1 characters. As for Sons of Liberty. Good game, not as good as part 1, but I never got the whole Raiden hate thing. Personally I think MGS2 would have been loads better if you could have also played through it as Snake, ala Resident Evil 2. Still, Kojima has a tendency to want to fuck his fans w/o lube. We've been waiting for what, 8 years to play as Snake again, and when we finally can, he's a geezer. *sigh* But I digress... Good luck with The Sorrow Cowboy, took me a while to figure out how to beat that one.
  7. Well got mine yesterday, literally one minute after sending a scathing email to Gamestop about how my pre-order wasn't in yet. Kinda funny. Anyhow, this thing kicks major ass. Call of Duty 2 rocks, Condemned seems pretty damn creepy thus far, and Kameo is a pretty gosh darn neat platformer. The online stuff you can do is great, xbox live arcade is just a cool friggen concept. Cheap simple games that are a ton of fun. Geometry Wars will probably be my first purchase off of the service, as the demo is just amazing. Great little shooter. Still the prospects of playing Smash TV online also calls to me. No problems thus far. Seems like my Box isn't overheating or anything like that, but I got the extended warrenty just in case. Now I just have to wait for Oblivion, DoA4, and Gears of War.
  8. heh great but not as good as: » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « You two tie five or six bodies together on the hull of the ship. Put Book front and center he's our friend we should honor him. Kaylee, get the kid taking a dirt nap with the baby Jesus, we need a hood ornament. Jayne, try not to steal too much of their shit."
  9. Well got the DVD, have only seen the deleted scenes so far but pretty good. Some of those really should have been in the movie IMO: » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « The Inara stuff especially, there were absolutely great moments that were missed out on in the film as a result of those scenes getting the boot. Especially that last conversation with Mal. The Book scene that was cut was also a crying shame. They really should have kept it in if only because Book buys it shortly thereafter. He really needed more screentime. Ah well. Prolly post more as I get into the other stuff.
  10. This is nothing particularly new. The PS2 had a ton of issues at launch here as well, even launching what 8 months after the Japanese launch. It's the joys of new tech. Microsoft is saying that problems are within regular margins for a new product, and they have been very good according to reports in getting replacements out quickly, even giving a new HD to Core users who had problems. The painful realities of launch.
  11. This thread deserved to live again!!!!!! Best Sega Love: Genesis: Strider. awesome action game Streets of Rage 1,2, and 3 (never played the US version, it got censored. PLayed the import) Gunstar Heroes (GBA sequel was just released.) Phantasy Star 1-4 (Since I played my Master System games on the Genny anyhow.) Castlevania: BLoodlines (Friggen great.) Earthworm Jim Sega CD Lunar 1 and 2 (in some ways superior to the PS1 remakes) Sonic CD (another one where the import kicked.) Snatcher (Kojima is God. On crack.) Popful Mail (WD brought us Falcom Goodness) Sewer Shark (Hey FMV was REALLY cool at first.) Saturn: Dragon Force: (Absolutely Amazing, RTS with a great story and Sega gameplay.) Panzer Dragoon Zwei: (Great motherfucking shooter) Virtua FIghter 2 (my favorite 3-d fighter.) Guardian Heroes (The best beat 'em up ever made.) Panzer Dragoon Saga (Holy Jeezus, amazing fucking RPG. Eons ahead of its time.) Astal (Standard gameplay, but GORGEOUS graphics) Policenauts (god I wish I had a better than 2nd grade reading level in Japanese.) Sega consoles rocked.
  12. Dunno what's going on with you then, I had no probs with the disc last time I played, no lock ups or anything. Wierd.
  13. If you select I like MGS2 you start out looking like Raiden, then sometime during the intro Col. Tom tells you to take off your mask, and thus, no more Raiden looking guy. SiBob: (re: a spoilery boss) » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « I agree that it is gorgeous, but then again, I think so much of the impact of that fight is how the visuals match the mood of the fight scene. Especially after the intense emotional buildup to finally have to kill her.
  14. Two more, "The Fury" probably the most visially impressive fight seen on the PS2.
  15. Just be sure to set up a good block of time for it, it is long, but holy shit, most games get kinda bleh right before the end, MGS3 bucks that trend, and does it something fierce. Glad to hear you are back on to beat it. It's kinda funny though, I know that there were a lot of die hard MGS fans who didn't beat this game, or had trouble getting into it. It's odd to me because I couldn't put the game down, it really did mix the best parts of 1 and 2. That and the soundtrack just keeps getting better with each game, and the MGS theme is now up there with my all time favorite video game themes. Ah rant over. Damn you for borrowing this Nick, all this talk has made me want to play again.
  16. Defninitely finish this thing, odd that it is locking up on you though, I never had any problems with that. If you haven't fought any bosses, yet, you are barely into the game at all, let me tell you some of the fights put the ones in MGS 1 to shame. BTW Music, if you can go back and finish it, the ending is probably the best one I have seen in years. If not best ending to a game EVER, it is that good.
  17. BWAHAHA!!!!!!! I played through that shit when I didn't even know ANY Japanese. 173. When you STILL haven't gotten over Aeris' death! (Pansy) 174. If you have had a debate that almost came to blows over whether or not FFVIII sucked compared to all the rest. 175. If you knew all the Japanese spell names before they got adopted over here. 176. You have played through any single FF more than twice. 177. You buy doujinshi like this: 178.You have ever written a FF fanfic. 179. And it was lemon. 180. and even better had the hottest chicks from each game getting it on (Tifa x Lulu ) 181. Can possibly explain this: 182.Bought the US release of the FFIII soundtrack by mail order back in the day. (point of pride) Haven't done even most of those, well, maybe 1/2.
  18. Just found what could be the coolest website I have been to in a while, it's called Pandora. What it does is allows you to put in a song or artist you like and it searches through its database for similar musical stylings and creates a radio station based on it. It's a great way to find new music. Anyone else try this out yet? Pandora.com Pretty friggen cool
  19. Probably accurate, though I think that unless one person in particular had a TON of influnece with a series early on, I think it is hard to get credit on either side of the pond. I mean hell, Miyamoto HIMSELF has said he had nothing to do with Metroid other than looking it over, and it still gets attributed to him. He also gets a ton of credit on more recent Zelda games when he hasn't been as heavily involved in one since Orcarina. This probably leads to the perception that Miyamoto personally programs every good game at Nintendo, even though there simply isn't enough time in the day. But who's to say that your favorite part of a Zelda game didn't come from someone else? We only know the big guys. The more I think on it the more picking the greatest designer of all time is problematic, especially considering the way that games are designed. At the end of the day there are very few lead designers on both sides that are well known. But while we are naming them: Jorden Mencer (sp) of Prince of Perisa fame and Itagaki of team Ninja are two more top designers.
  20. Yeo that's him. He did Day of the Tentacle also. Psychonauts is probably the best platformer of this generation, fun, funny, and DAMNED creative. Other great teams have been Black Isle/Bioware, Epic, 3D Realms, whole load of them. Sometimes you get the lead designer's name, sometimes not, but all top notch stuff. Just remembered Michael Ancel, he did the Rayman series along with the AMAZING Beyond Good and Evil, that game damn near out Zelda'd Zelda this gen. One Japanese designer that should have been on the list though would be IGA the guy behind Castlevania. He has a damn nice portfolio also. Glad to see I'm not the only one who knows western developers though.
  21. Could name a few, though western developers tend to specialize more than the average Japanese developer. Suzuki is my fave for several reasons, but I think that there are several developers who can hang with the Japanese. Come on Garriot started RPGs on computers as we know it, without him no Ultima, no Ultima getting big in Japan, no Dragon Quest, therefore no Final Fantasy. John Carmack has done WONDERS for 3d game development, and Sid Meier and Will Wright have brought gaming to the masses in ways that only maybe Miyamoto has. Warren Spector of System Shock and Deus Ex fame has done wonders also. I'm not out to rag on Japanese developers, but it seems that many times Western developers don't get their due. Bungie has a great portfolio, as does Blizzard, for example. As far as breadth of work, it was another reason I picked Suzuki, though to be fair many of the western designers have pretty impressive portfolios as well. Kojima has, for example done a total of 7 console games and 2 handheld. and Sakaguchi hasn't done much outside of the FF series. It comes down to personal taste and I get that, but there are a LOT of very talented developers on both sides of the pond.
  22. Yeah, last wekk it was only in Town and Country and for 2 showings, I was it for the fourth time on thurs with a friend who hadn't seen Firefly, he loved it, and wants to see the series now. It got pulled from theaters qith a quickness though. But what'cha gonna do? At least I can say AI caught the last theater showing in the city.
  23. Yeah, we'll I'd tell him to get the $399 one because the $299 one sans wireless and a harddrive is just now worth it. Two weeks to go though, I can't wait for mine.
  24. Well, there will probably be a 'shortage' for about a week or so, it worked wonders for Ninny with the N64 and more recently Sony with the PS2. Also the holiday bundles are a purely online thing. All brick and mortar sites are gonna be selling it regularly. This online bundle thing is nothing new BTW, it's been happenening with new systems for a while now, see the PSP at launch.
  25. Serious lack of Western Developers, geez, people make games outside of Japan you know, I would have popped Tim Schaefer, Ron Gilbert (both of LucasArts back in the day.), Richard Garriot (Ultima), Sid Meier (Civilization), and Will Wright (Pee on us Will!) in there. Course I still have to go with Yu Suzuki: Shenmue, Virtua Fighter, Space Harrier, Outrun, he was the arcade god. Also, Yu Sukuzi didn't do Sonic, that was Yuji Naka of Sonic Team.
