archangel
I don't know if anyone here is a big fan of the Flash, but the Flash has been my favorite super hero in DC forever, starting with the immortal Jay Garrick and going all the way through Bart Allen. After the last Crisis, Barry Allen returns from the Speed Force and is trying to cope with his sudden resurrection. There's a new threat to the speedster family, though, and they're all united against they're most dangerous enemy. So far it's been a really good series, as good as 'The Return of Barry Allen' from the mid '80's that was fucking fantastic. We're at issue 4/6 so far and I really recommend it. written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Ethan Van Sciver.
Lycaon
... Just how many members of the "Flash Family" are there?
archangel
Barry Allen, Bart Allen, Wally West, Jay Garrick, Jesse Quick, Johnny Quick, Max Mercury, Iris and Jai West... Edited August 29, 2009 by archangel
The NZA
you're a flash fan? huh, didnt know that. GL's my boy but i was curious during Waid's run, there was a lotta good talk about it then but i didnt know where to start, did you read any of that? written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Ethan Van Sciver. shit, i like that lineup, its the one brought me back to Lantern. as pointed out to Ly, Flash has a ridiculous bat-sized family (not so much my thing), is this new series forgiving of readers not knowing much about any of that? archangel
yea, the only thing you have to know is what happened to Allen back in the Crisis in the 80's (infinite I think it was?), when he sacrificed himself to destroy the Anti-monitor, and the fact that he came back after this last crisis (the Redundant Crisis? Who knows). But a really good read, which is the story arc that got me into the Flash in the first place is 'The Return of Barry Allen', which was done by your boy Waid. This has that same feeling of awesomeness that made me fall in love with the Speedsters. Funny thing is, my favorite Flash was always Jay Garrick. Always thought him to be the coolest one. But another really good read with the Flash is this one: and just to show you two panels in the new series that were so fucking full of win: Edited August 29, 2009 by archangel
Lycaon
Which one was the one in the Justice League cartoons? The one that was ADHDish. I once saw him jump on a badguy's back and start using his head as a bongo.
Iambaytor
Barry Allen, Bart Allen, Wally West, Jay Garrick, Jesse Quick, Johnny Quick, Max Mercury, Iris and Jai West... Wow, I had no idea about the latter 5. Jay's easily the coolest, Bart's never really been my thing, Wally's good for comedic relief and not much else. But I gotta ask, is there really any pertinent reason to bring back Barry Allen? I mean he was a great character but I don't think they really left anything to build on, I though he'd run his course. I know they brought Hal Jordon but that was mostly because Blackspoitation Lantern and that pussy Kyle Rayner weren't doing a very good job. Plus there's enough variety in the Green Lantern corp to justify such a decision in the best of times (also because Hal went like a bitch) but other than being possibly mentally retarded is there anything about Wally that Barry can really step in and make better. Will one of them have to wear a different costume?
The NZA
that pussy Kyle Rayner weren't doing a very good job. yeah, the most ive known of Flash was the sense i got that Wally (like Kyle later, in regards to Hal) that he was stuck in Barry's shadow, though i understand he got out from under it. wait, i know those guys and Impulse, who's Jay Garrick? i dont recall that name at all. im gonna check out this new series on your say-so, but if there's a piece of the Waid stuff (like that one you showed, very famous cover) that works well as a stand-alone, ill be down to read it. Again, with GL i think even non-Lantern fans can enjoy Emerald Twilight (when Hal loses it).

I once saw him jump on a badguy's back and start using his head as a bongo. Wally West Wow, I had no idea about the latter 5. Jessie Quick (now Jessie Chambers since she married the new Hourman, the son of the original Hourman) is the new Liberty Belle in the JSA. She's the Daughter of the original Liberty Belle and Johnny Quick, a mathematician who unlocked the abilities of the speed force through a mathematical formula. Max Mercury is a speedster from the 1800's who likes to run forward in time whenever he gets bored. He's the one who trained and pretty much became the surrogate father of Bart Allen (Impulse or Kid Flash) and Jai and Iris West are the children of Wally West. They're twins: Jay's easily the coolest Hands fucking down. Jay's always been my favorite. who's Jay Garrick? i dont recall that name at all. Respect, Bitch Jay Garrick is the original Flash from the 1940's Golden Age. He's the first, original Flash. btw, here's the bad ass page from the third of this arc (doesn't spoil anything, just awesome): that's right, SuperBitch. Know your role! Will one of them have to wear a different costume? I actually think it has more to do with the feel of keeping the old guard intact. Martian Manhunter's dead, Batman's dead, Barry Allen was dead, and the original Lantern was MIA. They brought back Jordan and you know Bruce will be back, too. They needed to bring back Allen to complete the set, since they permanently lost Jon. to be fair, they at least had the decency to keep Allen dead for 20 years. Mad props to DC for that. archangel
the way the speed force was explained is that it's a 'barrier' much like the sound/light barrier. it's a force of nature that grants movement and is tied to all dimensions at once. When you travel, you first break the sound barrier, then you break the light barrier, then time, then speed. It's a bit complicated.

The NZA
yeah, man - half the JLA's dead right now. Supes went missing for a year there, i dont think he's going anywhere for a while. the death of superman thing was so big, media-wise, i still think they need time and a really interesting angle if they wanna even approach that again, lest we get another supes blue/red event that you have to wiki a few years later to remember what the fuck went down. archangel
It's finally completed, and I have to say it was a really fun arc. Highly recommend to all.

Iambaytor
Basically the best way to explain the modern Flash is that when he needs to do something, he can, and they're so confident in this that they don't even try and pretend to make sense in describing it. The NZA
this would all be easier if we just universally accepted "unstable molecules". or, wizards.
Iambaytor
I think it's all just supposed to fall under the magic of being struck by lightning. After all it's responsible for the security drones in Chopping Mall, the robo-plane in Stealth, Johnny 5, Powder, Jason being risen from the dead, and Frankenstein. Lightning is made of magic and imagination!
