Right? I think that HBO began by letting the original series be. They let them be awesome for a couple years, and then it came back down to "the bottom line." They got a reputation for allowing good art--and then they started fucking around for more profit. I think that they realized that after Sex and the City ended, they didn't have a show "targeted at women." So they changed the direction True Blood was going in to suit a target audience. BIG. LAME. MISTAKE. I don't know if anyone else here watches Treme, but its first season was gangbusters. The second season---eh. I expected more from the creators of The Wire, and especially what I saw in the first season. Even the changes made to Game of Thrones from the books were all CLEARLY executive based. Meaning the assholes who sit in a room and try to calculate who will watch what based on bullshit stats and what will make the most money.
Sorry for the rant, but I have been noticing a trend with the new seasons of HBO shows. I've read all of the books that True Blood is based on, and for the first few seasons I thought the changes they made for the show were really good, and just fine, even for fans of the books. This season is...different, and I think its all based on the execs scrambling and interfering where they should not.
