The NZA
so yeah, bish has harped on about the greatness that we've missed on with the Ys series like ive whined about Shnemue III (;_;), noticed the series didn't have its own thread, and now there's news on it: Fans of the Japanese style role-playing game, particularly the long-running Ys series, have XSEED Games to thank for bringing a long list of developer Falcom's games stateside, breathing new life into the PSP. XSEED has inked a deal with Nihon Falcom to bring Ys Seven, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, Ys I & II Chronicles and The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky trilogy to North America. The first of those games will be the first in the list, with Ys Seven planned for a release on these shores some time this summer. Late summer, that is. Ys Seven is the first game in the decades old series built specifically for the PlayStation Portable, so expect it to take advantage of everything that little handheld has to offer. ive literally only played Wanderers from Ys (SNES) and about half of Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim (PS2), so i cant say much more here. if only someone would've installed 1 & 2 to my PC, so i couldve tried them... Thelogan
All I played were Y's book 1 & 2 for the Turbografx-16. I played them a lot, as there weren't many games for the Turbografx-16. Great games. Everyone else had a SNES or a Genesis. I'm still bitter about that.
The NZA
1993 NZA might've traded you his Sega-CD for your Turbo. i mean, i beat both Lunars and the other games i dug by then, you had splatterhouse, bonk and cosmic fantasy 2.

I still have the first 2 Bonk's memorized, never played the 3rd one. Keith Courage in the Alpha Zones and Military Madness were pretty badass as well, I still hook it up from time to time. I eventually got a Sega CD, a hand-me-down from CARLO, around '96-'97. Played Popful Mail and Eternal Champions: CFtDS and that's about it. I don't remember what happened to that. gunsmithx
I'm still masturbating to this news, I have come to really love the y's games(still need to play 2,4, and I think 5?) I played 3 back in the day and I played an imported copy of oath(so much fun) and 2 versions of 6 and 1. I loved xseed for lunar and now this but this proabbly means no lunar 2 for a while(time to bust out eternal blue on psp I guess). BTW alot of people on neogaf thinks this will bomb and xseed is done due to costs for this project but maybe not, I know they bought the translation already done by a fan(he did 6) and it's a very good one. I wonder if that might be the way to for bringing these games over.
bishopcruz
I'm still masturbating to this news, I have come to really love the y's games(still need to play 2,4, and I think 5?) I wonder if that might be the way to for bringing these games over. Well, we'll see. Xseed is actually bringing out GOOD versions of these games (the PS2 and PSP ports of VI were mediocre, and the less said about the port that was Legacy of Ys the better.) If the rumors of them buying the translation from Deuce (well known Ys translator) are true, then costs might be down for the actual localizations, and that would be keen. VII looks SO AWESOME, I cannot friggen wait. The only one I have yet to beat is V, and that's mainly because I have been waiting for the fan translation for fucking ever. Let me also say how psyched I am for Legend of Heroes VI. THAT is going to be the sleeper in this if there is one. I mean people in the US kinda know Ys, if from the hushed whispers of fanboys like myself, the Legend of Heroes games we got here were some of the worst translations I have ever seen. They would have been embarrassing in the days of FFII and PS3. I mean honestly, there was no damned excuse. Now that the 6 trilogy is getting a proper translation, (hopefully) the charm might actually come through. I for one am psyched. Edit: One of the reasons Falcom fucking rocks as one of the greatest game companies EVER! They allow the use of ANY Of their music, even in a commercial setting, some 3000+ songs and some pf the best game music EVER, for free without royalties so long as you credit them! I mean how cool is that? I love these guys! Edited May 17, 2010 by bishopcruz
The NZA
that is really cool of them, didnt know that. on a more sad note: with PSP sales in the gutter (figuratively speaking) last month, most of GAF who's hyped about this see XSeed as honorably omitting suicide by hitching themselves to this wagon, and feverently pray they keep their doors open long enough to get the whole lot out. sad state we're in. I think it all depends on how many they are planning to sell. If they didn't pay through the ass for the license, then they might do OK. Xseed does specialize in the release of niche titles, and I can't imagine that many of them sell anywhere near the top 10. If they can make a profit on like 20k or so (guessing here) it might work out. But I will say that anyone who is remotely interested in this series and these type of games had better BUY the damn things at release. Honestly I have played both 1 and 2 and Felghana to death, and purchased them for around a hundred bucks each with shipping from Japan (PC), and I will still be buying the PSP ones as soon as they come out. I won't say I'm not worried, but... here's hoping right?
Newtype
XSEED is already showing their devotion to upholding Falcom's legacy by announcing a deluxe collector's edition for upcoming PSP title Ys SEVEN. The package, which is set to retail at $49.99 ($20 more than the standard edition), will include a 12.5" by 34" cloth map, a soundtrack CD with over 20 songs, and a 60-page artbook with illustrations from all three upcoming Ys titles to be published by XSEED. bishopcruz
Well, Ys Seven came out today, Angel got his collector's edition, and mine is on its way from Amazon. Let me just say, I love Falcom, a LOT! The game is great so far, not sure if its better than Oath in Felghana yet, but it is definitely a hell of a lot of fun, really no one makes old school Action RPGs better than Falcom, the gameplay is sweet, the art is great, and the music is sublime. Also, props to Falcom for actually pulling off a party well in an Action RPG without slowing the pace down in the least. This looks to be the most ambitious Ys ever as far as gameplay is concerned, and it looks to be very successful. If you have a PSP I'd say get this game as soon as you can, not only to support XSEED for taking one hell of a risk, but because I'm hearing that these games might be having limited print runs because the series hasn't been all that successful in the past. The collector's edition is pretty badass by the way, the cloth map is HUGE, and the art book is really, really nice, with Art from Ys 7, Oath in Felghana, and Ys 1 and 2 Chronicles. I'm giddy right now, I never thought I'd see another Falcom game over here after YS 6 and Legend of Heroes failed to make a splash but we're getting 3 Ys games in 6 months or so, and all 3 Legend of Heroes 6 games. Awesome.
Newtype
We hope you’re done or at least halfway through Ys Seven by now. Why? Because there’s another Ys game coming to the PSP soon. Xseed sent us a reminder that Ys: The Oath in Felghana is due in stores this year. There’s also another limited edition for Ys fans to pick up. The Oath in Felghana package includes a music CD and a desktop calendar, which you can use to jot down dates for Ys I&II Chronicles and Trails of the Sky. Both of those Falcom titles are slated for 2011. The Ys: The Oath in Felghana limited edition costs $39.99. A standalone game is $10 less at $29.99. bishopcruz
If you like JRPGs and you haven't gotten Ys 7, shame on you! Ys: OiF is even better, and it has the best soundtrack in the series. And that is saying something. Xanadu next looks awesome, been out for years in Japan, but I think it could do alright here. Also for those who want to check out some Falcom in the cheap for PSP there is Gurumin, it's 9.95 on PSN and is alot of fun! <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yi7ABcInqFs?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yi7ABcInqFs?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yi7ABcInqFs?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3P4Nr4h8c0?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3P4Nr4h8c0?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3P4Nr4h8c0?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object> Edited September 20, 2010 by bishopcruz

The NZA
news relevant to some of your interests Excellent Gamasutra interview with Falcom president on Ys, Trails in the Sky Really well-done interview with president of Falcom Toshihiro Kondo, who before heading Falcom was a fan with websites dedicated to his favorite company. Only thing I wished for is some mention of the legendary Falcom Sound Team jdk. Not a single mention is rather disappointing :( http://www.gamasutra.com/view/featur..._story_of_.php The most noteworthy thing of out this interview is that it pretty much confirms Ys Celceta no Jukai on the Vita for the West.
