Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

Maldron

Recommended Posts

So with the demo for this game, I couldn't be more excited. But Maldron, you say, You're hateful of all things! Not so, good sirs, not so.

The gameplay looks to be decent action, but the story, by god, appears to be incredible. You play as Monkey, an endearing strongman working for a spiteful bitch who needs to be protected on her journey home that decided the best way to enlist your help would be to stick a slave crown on you that'll kill you if she dies. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where machines kill humans on sight. Part of the intro chapter actually shows you a good amount of post-apocalyptic New York City as you crash into it while trying to traverse the wings of a plane.

Anyway. I like Ninja Theory, so I'm looking forward to this.

I think the best advertising, really, would be to play the demo. But I'm looking to get this game.

See, she didn't come across as a bitch to me or spiteful. She seems terrified of what will happen to her and like she has instincts counter to what she's doing but she has to press on because she needs to survive. A frankly, Monkey, if I saw him pounding on the door like that in the demo I'd be concerned about potential rape and other things. He may be "endearing" but he looks like the aggressive, force you because he thinks you like it, sort.

I suppooooose, but I wouldn't instantly jump to "Death crown." Probably some kind of happy medium betwixt the two.

Horrific acts done in the name of fear are less sympathetic than those done in blind rage. Still, I totally wanna see where this story's going.

See, given the circumstances of the end of that opening segment, it was likely the only viable means of guaranteeing he wouldn't just abandon her or worse hurt her that she had available. They were both pressed for time there and those slave crowns were readily available on the ship.

Ninja theory has always been good at characterization so hopefully it carries through the whole game.

Oh, I trust them on story, most assuredly.

GAH. I'm in a fever pitch over this one. Vanquish looks to bore me, New Vegas will benefit from waiting, Dead Rising 2 will take forever... I think Enslaved is where it's at in this upcoming month for me.

Played the demo of this and though you don't get a feel for the escort component, It certainly got my interest. Drops here 05/10 so I look forward to checking it out.

PS- Mal- What exactly is endearing about the main guy? He screams '2001 nu-metal douchebag' to me, and it wouldn't suprise me at all if he was imprisoned for fronting a Limp Bizkit-style bank of sorts. And she's a wiley little cunt whom I sincerely hope gets hers.

He's Andy Serkis, for one. What's more, he doesn't go off on her for what she does to him, he calmly and begrudgingly accepts the situation and moves forward. He's emotive, and more down on his luck than berserker.

They could easily have shoehorned in the "WHY DID YOU DO THIS" rage, but he's beyond that, and because of it he comes across as intelligent.

EDIT: I just enjoy this interview bit, so I'm putting it in.

Eurogamer: Is Trip really Nariko? She must be related, at least!

Tameem Antoniades: I don't really know what goes on in [visual art director] Alex Taini's head. He likes redheads and so when we asked him to make Nariko hot, he gave her the longest, reddest hair anyone has ever seen! Trip... well, we asked him to make her hot, but not too hot. Red hair returns, this time shorter. Sigh. He defends this by saying it's a different shade of red.

Man, seeing that is what makes me hope he's biding his time for a nice staff to the head once the crown's off. He doesn't help his cause by chasing her in a menacing fashion, pounding on things and whatnot, but oh my god that young lady is going the right way for a quick, sure death.

My, what an ambiguous couple these two make! Are you playing the full game yet or still waiting like me?

Rejoice, my good man, for 10/5 is the worldwide release date, and not some slight against those in Australia or Britain! Doesn't hurt that NT is a European studio, mind you, but I'm waiting. I'm thinking of getting it from Amazon.

Odd that I was editing as you were posting.

If Harmonix have taught me anything, it's that I should be grateful that I get any games at all. Delayed AU release is nothing to me, now. Especially when you consider Worldwide release of games means I generally get them 14 or more hours ahead of you(if it's highly anticipated anyways, and certainly in the case of Halo, I could generally finish the game before you guys even get it).

i'd be lying if i said i wasnt curious about kane & lynch 2, despite about the worst box art in a long while. the co-op concept is cool, was a shame i heard nothing good about that or the army of two stuff, might give the demo a run one day.

i meant to grab this game's demo of the EU stores a while back, got caught up in RDR....will check out soon. i'm so behind on demos, i havent even finished Vanquish yet.

I think I should step in and keep the Kane and Lynch express from hijacking this thread!

Back to Enslaved, I gave the demo a shot, despite my Ninja Theory bashing in the DmC thread. I have to admit, it's not bad. I really am digging the dystopian/sci-fi reimagining of the Journey to the West. Liked Monkey a lot (you can't go wrong with Andy Serkis!). Graphics were nice. Controls were a little floaty (which worries me on the DmC front) and combat felt like just spaming the light attack button. 'Course it's a demo and I'm sure Monkey's repertoire will expand as the game progresses (at least I hope!)

ONLY hitch is it's dropping at a time when there are more games I'm interested in coming out than I can count!! My monies and time are already going to Dead Rising 2, Kojimavania, Vanquish, DJ Hero 2 (forget the haters!), and of course Rock Band 3 (with keyboards and the fender-don't-know-how-much-it-is-but-it doesn't-matter-squier guitar)!! And that's not counting DLC for Borderlands and Alan Wake, or my impressive back log. Oh, and that just takes us through OCTOBER! I'm beyond tapped.

My plan is to convince my brother to pick this one up, it's actually right up his alley (he LOVED Heavenly Sword). If he gets it, I'll probablly give it a go.

Yeah, I was faced with the same horrible glut of new titles, though I didn't have any of those band games to worry about. The gaming season has started, and it's horrible to envision the total cost. However, I'm willing to push it back to Christmas, as I enjoy not spending money when possible. Still, super expensive season coming up, just like two years ago when I did stupid things like buy little big planet.
