Mr. Hakujin
From Kevin Smith Yes, Kids - Jay and Silent Bob are coming back! ...So I don't own Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy or Dogma... But I DO own Jay and Silent Bob...So while I love playing with someone else's new toys on The Flash and Supergirl, I'm getting eager to play with my old toys again in the inter-connected View Askewniverse I spent the first half of my career creating. And so all last month, I had the time of my life laughing while writing Jay and Silent Bob Reboot - a fun flick in which the Jersey boys have to go back to Hollywood to stop a brand new reboot of the old Bluntman & Chronic Movie they hated so much. It's a tongue-in-cheek, silly-ass satire that pokes fun at the movie business's recent re-do obsession, featuring an all-star cast of cameos and familiar faces! And I already met with the good folks at Miramax and they're into it, so I'm hoping we'll be shooting in the summer!
Iambaytor
I'm sure the 1999 versions of all of us are super stoked for this.
Mr. Hakujin
No sarcasm, but I am legitimately stoked to see a new Kevin Smith Askewniverse comedy. The last film of his I saw was Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and that was back in *let me check on that* 2008! I started checking out some of his Fatman on Batman YouTube videos last year, so after nearly a decade I guess I'm ready to see if he's still got the chops for comedy.
Iambaytor
If you watch Yoga Hosers I think you will find that he does not. And this being a sequel to his worst Askewniverse movie (I know there are good cases made for Chasing Amy and Mallrats holding that title but Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is all of his worst instincts amplified to 11) doesn't give me a lot of hope. Keth
Dude I tried Yoga Hosers the other day. What the hell was happening there?
Iambaytor
Hubris and a shitload of weed.
Mr. Hakujin
Dude I tried Yoga Hosers the other day. What the hell was happening there? It looked like his attempt at a female version of Clerks mixed with a horror teen flick from the trailer. The overblown Canadian accents alone made me wary. Then the bad reviews poured down on it, so I stayed away. I think it's on Netflix now, so I may get around to it...someday.
Donatella
I'm sure the 1999 versions of all of us are super stoked for this. I feel like I will forever be the 90s version of me! Kevin Smith has been producing garbage for years buuuut I'll be cautiously hopeful that a return to his roots will produce something fun. He hasn't earned this at all, but the View Askewniverse films were a big part of my young adult life that I revisit often so I'm definitely interested to see something new!
Keth
Red State was great, and I really enjoyed how stupid Tusk was.
Donatella
Red State was great, and I really enjoyed how stupid Tusk was. Tusk was entertaining garbage, I'll give you that! All the recent films I've seen have at the very least been watchable. Just not what I know he's capable of!
Mr. Hakujin
Rewatched J&SBSB last night and it held up better than I thought it would. I had forgotten how funny Jason Mewes was in this, not to mention a lot of the cameos. Carrie Fisher as the nun, Joe Quesada as the Marvelous Pizza delivery guy, and that whole bit with Jon Stewart & Will Ferrel talking about CLIT--it brought the lulz. The NZA
And this being a sequel to his worst Askewniverse movie (I know there are good cases made for Chasing Amy and Mallrats holding that title but Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is all of his worst instincts amplified to 11) doesn't give me a lot of hope. agreed on J&SB being giant in-jokes/etc and not great as a standalone thing, but...i feel like you've addressed this elsewhere, but why would Chasing Amy be at the bottom of the list? i was on board with that one right up till about the ending or so. Iambaytor
The ending is a lot of why people cite it and I'd be inclined to agree, I really haven't seen it in a long time but I recall it being his worst instincts about comedy mixed with his worst instincts on drama. Keth
Chasing Amy was boring as fuck. I'll say it.
Da Cap'n 2099
Agreed. Also, Mallrats was his REAL masterpiece.
The NZA
alright, let's do this chasing amy > clerks > mallrats > dogma > j&sb dogma really should've been better than malrats, i think my biggest gripe with that one was he had this really great cast with top-tier comedians, and while what we got was entertaining, i couldn't help but feel someone else would've done something better

The NZA
damn, maybe i should rewatch that one sometime then in the day, it wasn't half as funny as the funnier parts of chasing amy, for me!
Keth
Man Dogma's my favorite one.
Da Cap'n 2099
Mallrats > Clerks 2 > Dogma > Chasing Amy > Clerks > J&SBSB Mallrats and Clerks 2 often go back-and-forth depending on my mood. Also, Chasing Amy and Clerks go back and forth as well. Edited February 20, 2017 by Da Cap'n 2099
Little Nemo McFly
Oh - so he's doing this. (shrugs) Yup - there are a lotta reboots out there. I guess it suits what 'Strike Back' was - dumb fun about dumb movies. I'd prefer a 'not a direct-sequel' story - but, I liked 'Strike Back'. I'm down. Mr. Hakujin
Mallrats is my favorite Kevin Smith film, and the one I've seen the most, but Chasing Amy is probably his "best film" in terms of Smith as a writer/filmmaker. Little Nemo McFly
Chasing Amy is probably his "best film" in terms of Smith as a writer/filmmaker. 100% agree. Probably my fav Askew installment - I've seen 'em all too many times, but I've probably seen Chasing Amy the most...well, maybe Clerks. It's the most 'real' in a lot of senses of the word. I absolutely appreciate how honest that film is. Also... It's kind of what I'd like to see in another installment - not in terms of subject matter...just shot in a different lense than the others - if you get my meaning. Same universe - but, 'Strike Back' and 'Chasing Amy' don't aesthetically or tonally feel related. Jay n' Bob's cameo / cinematic tie-in in that movie was so well done. Guess it's what I want in another chapter - same universe, but in a completely different 'lense'. I love the idea of a corporate setting w/ something to say - the more I think about it.
