  1. You don't wish to respond, fine, but I'm still at a loss for the logic in this statement. Because someone likes Megadeth more than other metal bands they somehow have less conviction to the genre than, well, what bands WOULD show conviction, in your eyes? I'm legitimately curious, here, more than anything. Admittedly, I'd personally find it an odd choice(my first reaction would be something like "Megadeth? Seriously?"), but my favorite metal band(if forced to pick just one) would probably be Savatage, so I guess I can't fault someone else for having an odd choice as a favorite metal band. I'm just trying to determine why picking Megadeth as a favorite metal band would be any better or worse in terms of their "conviction" than going with some other "classic" band like Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, or Metallica, or on the other end of the scale, going for some mega obscure band like Druid, Trampled Underfoot, or Saint Daemon. And as an aside, you're right, NIN aren't metal, they're industrial. A related, albeit seperate genre. And yes, I AM passionate when it comes to my music, as I've said, a huge part of my time and my finances have gone to supporting it. I like movies, I like gaming, I like reading, yet I could live without all those things...I cannot however live without music. Outside of family and friends, music is my one real love and metal in particular is my music of choice, so yeah, it means a lot to me, and yes, I will get very into any discussion regarding my music. Just how I am, and how I've always been.
  2. The difference is, I can back up every claim I've made, if you want me to. And OOC, if as you say you don't even know Megadeth, why would you snicker at them being someone's favorite metal band?
  3. I'm with NZA on this one, Transformers blew. Much like Alien vs Predator(both of em), they put the focus on boring, bland, 2 dimensional human characters, and you know, the big DRAW of the movie, the reason people were seeing it(ie, the predators and aliens fighting, and the Transformers) were given bit parts. Fuck, the animated Transformers movie absolutely blew this one away, even in the acting department!
  4. A huge part of my circle of friends are "hardcore metal fans", and that circle includes multiple metal musicians. And ALL of them consider Megadeth metal. Some of em worship em, some of em HATE Megadeth, some of them just don't care about them either way, some of em like the music but hate Dave's vocals. Some of them are way into thrash, some of em love power metal, some of them lean towards the black and death metal side of the fence. But one thing they will all agree on is that Megadeth certainly IS metal, they might not agree on the quality of it(which isn't the subject for debate either, they're not one of my favorite bands, they're not even one of my favorite thrash bands) but they'll still agree anyone saying they aren't metal(and aren't specifically talking about Risk only) is talking out their ass. And yes, this even includes the death and black metal fans, whose music tastes leans towards stuff a lot heavier than anything Mustaine and company have put out. As for me being arrogant, sure, I won't deny it, cause on this subject, I know my shit. Argue with me about the nuances of rap, and hey, I'll forfeit before it even starts. Argue with me about country, and while I do know a fair bit about the subject, I won't claim to be an authority. But metal? No way, metal is my one BIG thing, I've been involved in the scene for years and go WAY beyond the average person when it comes to promoting and supporting my kinda music. Beyond that, I don't just give music a casual listen and that's that, I read and pay attention to the lyrics(even the growly deathy and black metal bands I listen to, I might not understand what they're saying, but I'll try my best to find out, same with my bands that don't sing in English, I try and find translations), I read up on the history of the genre and of the specific bands, I devote a probably SCARY amount of my time and money(I wasn't exaggerating when I said I owned thousands of metal CDs, and they're all real copies, not burned ones) to metal in ALL it's forms(from power metal and glam to thrash to doom to black and death to "nu-metal/metalcore", I've got it). So yes, I may be arrogant, but on this topic, I've earned it, and I can point you to NUMEROUS metal forums(filled with yes, "hardcore metal fans") and newsgroups filled with people who will back up my claims.
  5. Those "in the know" are already laughing their ass off about someone claiming Megadeth isn't metal, and I'll be glad to point you to about a dozen metal forums and newsgroups where you can go ask for confirmation on that. Now that said, I know more about metal than you likely ever will, so please, when you've learned a little more, get back to me then maybe you can talk as my equal on this subject. I don't claim to be an expert on most musical styles, but when it comes to metal, I know my shit, and yes, I AM an expert on the topic. I've got thousands of metal CDs from 2 dozen different countries, I ran a metal radio show for a couple years, I've had reviews posted on band websites and on my own, I've gotten invitations to local shows based on my work promoting metal online, I've converted many non-metal fans to metal fans, so please, don't talk to me about those "in the know", cause I guarantee you, I know far more of them than you do.
  6. You can think the world is flat if you want, too, and in both cases you'll still be wrong. Of course, if you CHOOSE to be wrong, I can't stop you, but it doesn't make you any less wrong.
  7. Anyone who thinks Megadeth isn't metal is retarded and knows shit about the genre, period. Go to ANY metal discussion forum and say Rust in Peace or Peace Sells aren't metal, you'll be laughed off the board, deservedly so. They're far from one of my favorite bands(hell, they aren't anywhere near one of my favorite thrash bands), but they ARE metal, like em or not. And why not listen to the "heaviest shit out there"? Cause well, a lot of it is fucking garbage, that's why. Shitty music combined with shitty vocals and shitty lyrics, in other words, completely worthless.
  8. Well, anyone who claims to know metal and doesn't know Rust in Peace really has no business speaking on the subject to begin with, IMO. And hey, I don't like Mustaine's voice much either, honestly, though I'll still take his singing over most death metal vocalists any day of the week.
  9. Uhh, they're...not? Okay, Risk isn't, but Rust in Peace, or Peace Sells?
  10. Well, she took a break from the internet(not by choice, her internet speed was dropped to dialup levels because of too much downloading, my fault for trying to get her to join me on WoW, downloading the client and patches was what caused it) and once her net speed was restored, she just hasn't been on much. I'll ask her tonight if she plans on dropping back by.
  11. I'd take Zeppelin over both the other two, even if they were singing about doing laundry and watching soap operas.
  12. Uhh, did you read what I wrote? I said Seagal is one of the only big action stars from back in the day that Stallone hasn't at least tried to get, not that I wanted him to get him.
  13. I'm familiar with it. The fact that he followed it with Universal Soldier part whatever will however, negate whatever he gains with JCVD.
  14. "Oh everybody's doing redos of their best 80s series" I'm not sure doing direct to DVD sequels of action movies that weren't huge to begin with counts as "salvaging a career" though. Certainly not as much as starring in a theatrical, apparently big budget action movie with a LOT of names in it. "Plus lets be honest Universal Soldier was actually one of his better films." Maybe, though that still sorta like discussing which blunt force trauma to the head is more pleasant. If I gotta go with a JC movie, I'll go with either Hard Target(it's watered down John Woo, but it's still John Woo, plus Lance Henricksen is in it) or Sudden Death(mainly cause of Powers Boothe). "And give the man some credit, he turned down Street Fight: The Legend of Chun-Li" Well, I never accused the guy of being bright, but I didn't say he was actually brain dead, either...
  15. "The part ones for comic movies are always pretty weak, mostly cause they have to set up the origin story. X-Men 1 is kinda cheesy and boring especially compared with X2" I liked the first X-Men, though I prefer X2 as well. OTOH, the third one was much much weaker, which rather does seem to be the trend in comic movie series these days. "Batman Begins was a novel concept that turned out pretty dull for the most part but was a nice lead up into the cinematic juggernaut The Dark Knight." I didn't consider it dull, though TDK was indeed a big step up. Now to see if the next one can break the good first, very good second, disappointing 3rd that has so far been the case with X-men, Spiderman, and Blade. "Spider-Man was really the only one that was anything short of incredible right out the gate and even compared to the second it could better. I'm sure Iron-Man 2 will be much better than the first." Yeah, I liked the second Spiderman more than the first 2, though I'm not sure if it's because it's better or simply for the fact that I always liked Doc Ock more than Green Goblin. "But you know what movie worked right out the gate? The Incredible Hulk (the one from 2008), it didn't waste but 5 minutes on the origin story and went right into it. Unless you have a character that most people don't know the origin story of (I'm looking at you Frank Miller) then there's really no point in wasting time on origin stories, just give a rough summary and you're golden." I'll agree that a lot of the time too much is spent on the origin story, although at the same time, a lot of people DO like to actually SEE the origins of their favorite heroes on the big screen, rather than just reading it in a comic.
  16. He's currently working on Universal Soldier:The Next Generation. I really don't think anymore needs to be said.
  17. "Let's quote some Metallica cause who won't recognize them. Off the bat, two songs come to mind that have a good resonating message but rather 'high brow' lyrics: Hero of the Day and Until It Sleeps. Personally, I'd rather metaphors and fantasy than nonsense mish mash." I would have gone Disposable Heroes myself, heh. "And metal, like every other genre, has it's share of bands with crap lyrics. How about alternative? I can name ten bands off the top of my head with ridiculous pointless lyrics that sound as if they were randomly flipping through the dictionary. Pop and Hip Hop don't seem to suffer from this ailment, but I think that's due more to the fact that these are genres meant for mass consumption." Yeah, all genres have their share of crap lyrics. I don't think "crank dat Soulja Boi" or "it's gettin hot in here, so take off all your clothes" are gonna be winning any lyrical awards anytime soon, either. Yet I'm not gonna write off all rap/hip-hop lyrics just cause some of it is shit. "Not to mention, I agree with ASC to an extent. Personally, I prefer music and lyrics to be equally as good. However, there is no denying that music moves no matter what's being sung and sometimes you can't help but love a song in spite of this." Yep. Bad lyrics can't make a good band bad, but good lyrics can make a good band better.
  18. Why the fuck does it matter if we'd "all know" it or not? Just cause your clearly close minded world hasn't come across some metal band somehow devalues their lyrics? If you're gonna talk shit about a genre and demand we post meaninful lyrics from that genre, you can't then turn around and be a douche and demand that we only post lyrics from the "big name" bands. As for your bitching about Motorhead's lyrics not "standing for" anything, actually, a great many of their songs are statements against warfare, against organized religion(particularly, those who try to force their religion on others), they've even done a song decrying child abuse so tell me, have you even HEARD any Motorhead beyond Ace of Spades? It always amazes me when people who don't know shit about a genre then go on to talk shit about it. You want to find metal lyrics that are meaningful, then turn around and make sure people can't post meaningful lyrics from metal bands that may NOT be big and mainstream? Sounds to me like you're just a tool who can't stand the idea that he might be wrong, so you'll rant and rave, but in the end, you aren't even WILLING to look at the possibility you might be wrong. Explain to me why Skyclad's lyrics(which are often both meaingful AND humorous) don't matter cause you haven't heard of them? Explain to me why the lyrics of Savatage, who are a metal band, somehow don't count as examples of "meaningful" metal lyrics because you might not be familiar with them? Your entire post here shows clear as day that you don't REALLY want to find anything, you simply posted it to be a dick and try to show up anyone who likes metal simply because you do not. And if someone comes along and presents a compelling arguement that proves you wrong, well, you can just pretend it doesn't exist because you've never heard of the band in question? How very sad. At least you're honest though, most people in these sort of discussions at least PRETEND they're willing to listen to the opposing side. Hell, it saddens me that even the people here who actually seem to KNOW metal somewhat are so quick to dismiss genre's lyrics. Sure, a lot of power metal is about sci-fi/fantasy shit(I'm not sure why this matters to begin with, but hey), but a LOT of power metal bands have lyrics about actual history, about battles and events I suspect 90% of this board has never even HEARD of, or about stuff that's NOT "dragons and elves" or what have you. For example, Sabaton's 40:1, which is about the Battle of Wizna in WW2, where 700 Polish soldiers held off 40000 Germans for 3 days. Or Falconer's Home of the Knave, which while somewhat dressed in "fantasy" lyrics, was actually an attack on the policies of the Bush administration.
  19. The soundtrack to Conan the Barbarian>>>>all. Basil Poledouris was doing fantasy movie epic soundtrack music long before LotR soundtrack came along, and did it even better. Riddle of steel, motherfuckers.
  20. I'll see it, but I'm more interested in Stallone's other current project, The Expendables or something like that. Not so much cause it's another Stallone action movie, but because he's recruited(or tried to recruit) about half of Hollywood's current and former action movie stars to be in the fucking thing. Already signed on are Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren(Rocky 4 rematch?), plus Forrest Whittaker, Ben Kingsley, and the UFC's Randy Couture. Jean Claude Van Damme was actually contacted for a role but turned it down because he "didn't want his career going in that direction"("that direction" being "up" I guess), so Dolph got the part instead(one Universal Soldier says no, so get the other one I suppose). And Couture's part was originally planned for Wes Snipes, but that whole tax evasion/jail thing put an end to that. And, according to some sources, old Sly even reached out to Arnold to see if he could find time for a part, but sadly that was a no go too. Seriously, if Stallone tries for Norris or Seagal, I don't think there's ANY old school actiong guy he hasn't at least tried for...
  21. When it came out, I didn't know what it was, or care about it. Someone at work whose tastes I usually share recommended it. So I rented it and watched it late one night and was impressed enough to go and buy it next day, then followed up with the series so I could see the backstory that I'd missed.
  22. I liked it MUCH more than the first, though I guess I can agree with the part about Hellboy and crew seeming like guests in someone else's story. That said, I'd rather see them as guests in a good story than see a less interesting story focused on them(ie, part 1).
  23. I like the Rainbow Six games. I hate sci-fi shooters, they just don't interest me, this is why the Unreal, Half Life, Doom, Quake, Halo, etc games will never make my favorites list. Likewise, I like modern shooters, so WW2 games like the Medal of Honor games and such don't appeal to me either.
  24. Watched the Shaft remake(well, not technically a remake, I guess) with Samuel L Jackson last night.Watched the Shaft remake(well, not technically a remake, I guess) with Samuel L Jackson last night.
