  1. Finally got around to DLing some Idlewild songs, so far I like what I hear, I've got Actually it's darkness, little discourage, Roseability, & these little wooden ideas now. I'd say Little Discourage is my fave. Tossed a bunch of the other bands you all mentioned on the DL list too, can't hurt. Haven't heard good new (new to me anyways) bands in a while.
  2. I was a Ranger in GS when I played, which in that game basically meant that I was a shitty fighter with some shitty +.000000000001 defense spells till I reach level 8 billion or so when you get cool stuff.
  3. Hmm, Mike can correct me if I'm wrong on this, but the first video game I remember having at home was Buck Rogers on the Adam. The game was on a cassete that took forever to load, and if anything touched the thing while it was loading, it would crash. Great game though, as far as I remember it was a vertically scrolling space shooter. What really got me into games tho was the master system. Black belt was and still is one of my favs on it, as was Alex kid in miracle world, oh, and Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap took up an immense portion of my childhood, probably the first long game that I seriously sit down for days in a row, wrote down passwordsa and everything else, and beat. Favorite early computer games where Doom and X-com, each classics in their own rights.
  4. He, I'm "Big Wicker Ventriloquist." Works for me.
  5. damn, MLB, you're confusing me, I'd think that Empire of the Sun would be one of your least favorites of Speilberg. I thought it was pretty decent, but one of his more "manipulative" movies. I'm not exactly a Speilberg fan like I'm a kubrick and Scorsese fan, but I do think he's done some great stuff, and usually knows what he's doing. Though he's not by any means perfect, he isn't the big commercial whore people make him out to be at all. And sure, Austin Powers 2 was funny, but dammit it was all the same jokes from part one with some stuff added on, it was an expansion pack, not a sequel.... I want to wait till they make the last Austin Powers movie and just watch that one since it will include all the jokes from the previous movies....
  6. Oy vey, you all just said a mouthfull.... First, I'd say that The Thin Red Line tryed to be a modern day Apocalypse now. Tried too damn hard to be all philosophical and pretentious for my tastes. I did like the idea of having huge actors drop like flies alla Hitchcock, but a movie can have all the great concepts and theoretical ideas it wants, if it doesn't so as much as hold my attention, it can't be helped. And I don't really buy the whole action/horror of war idea. Most war movies show both. Platoon is not just action with no consequences behind it. War is pretty shitty in Platoon. I didn't think Full Metal Jacket's focus was on action at all. hell, FMJ is almost a really really dark action/comedy. I'd say it shows the irony of war. Most of the action scenes were very detached, showing dots in the distance being blown away by troops. Not much was really as intense as it gets in other movies. I liked SPR because Speilberg is at his best when he has a subject that requires all of the insane amount of emotion that he puts into his movies. Stuff like the holocaust and WW2 can benefit from his style, you can't put too much emotion into those subjects. After watching an insane amount of killing, I don't think stuff like the great dog tag scene, and the graveyard scene at the end are that out of place. Action and the horror of war go hand in hand, forget about that and you get stuff like "Navy Seals." Oh, and IMO Speilberg would do a damned fine job if he directed star wars... how differant is it really from Indiana Jones, I mean, by way of direction? Speilburg is quite the visual badass (AI still looked incredible, as dissapointing as it was) and directs action quite well. When it comes to light-hearted action packed stuff, they're not that different.
  7. heh, I love that movie, goddammit, Jonze is finally working on something else now too. Last I heard he and Charile Kaufman (writer of BJM) were working on one called "adaptation" which is about Kaufman trying to adapt the book "the orchid theif" to film. Supposedly Kaufman wanted to adapt it, found it way too damned hard, so he decided to write a script about him trying to adapt it. Nick Cage and Meryl STreep are signed up for it. Sounds very cool to me. I can't wait to see something else from these two. It would rock if they stayed a writer director combo, insane amounts of potential, more originality in the two of them than there is in 90% of writers and directors today.
  8. You saw the trailer, ya monkey. Before we were soldiers, has gibson in it, about crop circles. Looks good to me. Premise might sound lame, but this guy's the master of making incredible stuff out of lame premises IMO.
  9. I don't really know when/if Unbreakable 2 comes out, it's not listed on imdb or anything. And sure, the ending was a bit anticlimatic, but if it's just the origin story in a trilogy, I can see it fitting into part of a great story. The movie was a hell of a refreshing take on the superhero thing, so I'd love to see more, maybe after Signs, hopefully?
  10. The bands I remember most from the earlier 90s are Green Day, Guns n Roses, Nirvana, Pearl jam, I associate the later 90's with my top 3 bands now, NIN, Pumpkins, and Tool, with radiohead as a runner up. Defining songs for me would be 1. Pumpkins - Cherub Rock 2. Tool - Sober 3. Green Day - She 4. Nirvana - Breed 5. Guns n Roses - Civil War 6. Pearl Jam - Glorified Version of a Pellet Gun 7. NIN - Down in It 8. Radiohead - Creep 9. STP - Big Empty 10. SoundGarden - Outshined That's just the stuff I remember most vividly, mostly represents my favorites now too.
  11. I have to agree with the Joker pick. Nicholson is the only person that could have pulled it off, and that damned well too. Of course my pick that isn't on this list would have to be Dolph Lundren as Punisher! Now that was a movie...
  12. Hmm, pretty much what I've expected so far... except for best supporting actress, I'd htough Jennifer Conelly would take it. I'm glad Berry got best actress, she really did a great job in Monster's Ball, I'm pullin' for her to win the Oscar. As much as Crowe deserves to win best actor, I just think that it stinks that he gets two in a row when by no stretch of the imagination did he deserve one for gladiator. He should be forced to exchange the gladiator one for a Beautiful mind one....
  13. Whoa there!!! Whoa whoa whoa... we all know what happens when you predict something will be better than one of your favorite movies. "(Insert utterly horribly movie here) is going to be better than (saving private ryan/star wars)!!!!" Now don't you go and jynx star wars. It's looking alright so far, I have high hopes, but I don't think that the movie can stand a TD prediction/curse. I'm hopefull for Indy 4 too, Speiburg is gonna direct it, and M. Night Shymalan (Sixth sense, unbreakable, the upcoming Signs) is gonna help write it. I love the guy, I guess this'll let us see if he can write. I said I thought the writing was a bit weak for unbreakable, but I take that back since it's supposed to be part of a series. If that's true I'll suspend my judgement till he follows it up.
  14. Here's a few more Joy Division Gary Numan Styx! And other than Blue Monday, New Order just rocks, I've been listening to em since Billy Corgan became their guitarist for a bit.
  15. All in all, I like the changes. This is exactly what I meant when I said stuff needed to be more polished. The topics are divided up fairly well, everyone seems to be happy with their moderation duties, and it looks like it's easier for people new to the board to navigate it. :approve:
  16. yeah d00d, MK ahnihalation r0ckeD, ya know how they did the animality thing in that one? Check this out... in part 3, I wanna put in the BABALITIES, and FRIENDSHIPS!!!! So in teh middle of the fight kano will give johnny cage a present, and they'll hold hands, but then the evil reptile will turn them both into babies!!! You haven't seen action untill you see Liu Kang create a rainbow out of thin air!
  17. Oh, huge fan of Pi of course. As for which topics to check out, well, if you really want some good conversation and [/b]excellent moderation , you head on over to the movies forum. And since it's in dire need of living members contributing, you should head over to Aristotle's Lyceum. Other than a bunch of long dead philosophers talking to each other, there's this cowboy guy that is desperate for some insights... though he'll probably edit half of them out... General is also a pretty good place to start. Most of the forums are self explanitory, just be warned, fight club is nto for the faint of heart. The cowboy..is not desperate! And he will not edit, unless forced to do so. ..shit. Ignore the next line.
  18. Hey, welcome to the board, and great avatar by the way.
  19. Careful with the spoilers there! Half the fun of that movie was watching it the first time and being confused as hell, then watching it again and realizing what really happened. All I'll say is that the movie does make sense, just not the first time you see it. And yeah, Tim Burton deserves to be on the list. Edward scissorhands is one of my favorites, Beetlejuice, Pee-wee's big adventure, Batman, and Nightmare before christmas (he didnt direct it, but wrote it and came up with all of the visuals) are enough to put him up top. He's been getting way too much flak for Planet of the Apes. I still defend it, the way I see it, he saved a script that had been rewritten a million times by a million people by making it great looking and pretty funny. It was a movie that didn't need to be remade with a piss-poor script, and he made it worth sitting through IMO. He can afford one bad movie. Fuck, francis ford coppolla did "Jack" the one about Robin WIlliams playing a 7 year old with a 40 year old body, I don't see ya throwing teh Godfather away.... I don't like the fact that he's become a "director for hire" though. I'd like him to do more original movies, not just remakes of anything remotely gothic. And sure, in all of this Kevin Smith mess you could say Burton is a dick, but that doesn't stop him for being a great director. Kubrik made his actors cry, he was a complete asshole, but that won't keep me from watching his movies. I dunno, I jsut don't think past masterpeices should be overlooked because of stuff you dont agree with now.
  20. The purpose of this thread is to prove that sequels are not inherently bad, there are quite a few great ones out there. What are your favorite sequels and why? Of course the first one I have to mention is the godfather II. The king of all sequels, surpassed the original and is one of the best movies ever made. Trilogies usually fare pretty well, Star wars, Indiana Jones, and Back to the future are pretty good examples. James Cameron has made two of my favorite sequels, Terminator 2, and Aliens. Both I think were better than teh originals. He has a couple more on the way too. True lies 2, Terminator 3, if he can pull those off, he'll just be the sequel king. Evil Dead 2 and Amry of Darkness were also damned fine sequels, evil dead 2 being the bets in the series IMO. Though noone near as good as the original, I thought Hannibal was a pretty damned good movie, changed the stuff from the book for very good reason, so it's a movie about unrequited love, with slick direction and twisted humor. Of course, Silence of the lambs is also technically a sequel to Manhunter/red dragon (which they are thinking of remaking with ed norton... hmm), but since hannibal is the only real link between em, it's not really a sequel. Another great one I almost forgot, A Better Tommorrow 2 Woo knew what kind of movie he was making so he just said "fuck the plot." First better tommorrow resolved itself pretty well, they didnt exactly plan a sequel, so uh... why is Chow's character back for part 2.... "uh.... he has a twin brother!... now shut up and watch things die" great movie though. Lets here some more, I know I'm missing a lot.
  21. hmm, that's odd, most people love finger 11 upon hearing em, onyl song of their I don't like much is "Drag you down," stuff like quicksand, above, and broken words usually get people into em, eh well, diff strokes for different folks. I'm dling some Idlewild songs right now, I'll post what I think. I've also been getting into a band called Ozma that weezer has been touring with for the last two tours. While they sound a LOT like weezer, they're still pretty good, catchy as hell, choice cuts are Battlescars, Natalie Portman, Domino Effect. "There's battlescars on all my guitars but still I come out here and play, there's battlescars on my face and my arms but you still kiss me every day..." Oh and this is more of a plug for my friends... but I think they're a great band despite the fact that i know em. Twice the Sun, a local miami band that just got signed to Roadrunner records, they're actually really good. They are an industrial, perfect circle-ish band, for a local band they're pretty good. Best songs are Reach Out, Self-Control, and Into a silence.
  22. The sites for Aronofsky's movies rock, the pi website has a lot of info on everything in the movie, from teh chaos theory to the game "go." Proyas has a cool site too www.mysteryclock.com, he puts up all of his shorts and even commercials, wish more people did that. But if you haven't heard of him, you have to rent the FIRST crow movie, and Dark city. And yeah, if there's one thing Shyamalan could improve it's his scriptwriting... Maybe he'll get a writer, maybe he'll just get better as time passes, but as a director I think he's damned incredible. And yeah, Fincher is badass, chooses great scripts to shoot. And I agree that his special effects, fast cutting and everything else usually works just fine within the context of his movies. That kind of criticism usually comes from pretentious fucks that like nothing american and want to watch paint dry for 2 hours. Oh, and you reminded me of another one of my new favorites, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, aka "that weird french guy" that did Alien 4. Sure, that one sucked, but that's because a curse of epic proportions has been put on the Alien franchise... But his other movies rule. City of Lost Children, Delicatessan, and Amelie are all great, and with the last one he not only proved that he can do stuff outside of weird sci fi, but he can do stuff without his past co-director Marc Caro. He has a weird, great sense of humor, really unique style, with storybook style narration, close up fish eye lens shots, and creative use of special effects. And the Coen brothers do indeed rule! Can't beleive I forgot them, they have so much variety in what they do it's insane. I thought The Man Who Wasn't There was one of last year's best movies. So far, thos eguys have done no wrong. others I forgot Oliver Stone: Gotta love Oliver Stone. He's opinionated as hell, and has strong views on just about everything, but you can't deny he's a badass. He's done some verifiable classics, like Platoon, JFK, and Wall Street. I can't think of a single movie of his that isn't worth watching. Even the movies that some consider his missteps (natural born killers, U-turn) are interesting enough to at least be worth watching. A little known great one of his is Salvador, with James Woods, noone I know has seen it, so I suggest you all check that one out. David Cronenberg: I've mentioned him before, he's done lots of great, fucked up movies like Dead Ringers, about twin gynecologists, the Fly,and videodrone. Haven't seen nearly al he's done, since he started with B-movie horror stuff. Anotehr great one of his is eXistenZ. It's basically the same concept as Fincher's "The Game." While similar, it's not at all a rip-off, he has his own spin on teh whole VR game thing. David Lynch - goddamn, call you kid David these days and he becomes a great director.... This is teh guy who did teh Twin peaks TV series, the Elephant man, Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, Dune, and Mulhulland drive. Unique as hell, likes stuff about the evil hiding in small towns, and LOVES dream sequences. Noone can do dreams like lynch does. All of those I mentioned are worth checking out... avoid lost highway... Also can't beleive I forgot Wes Anderson! The director of Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, and The Royal Tenebaums. God damn I love those movies, funny as hell, and they look great too, especially tenebaums. Also uses really cool music. Inserting very weird, random plays in his movies (usually based on other movies, serpico, platoon, etc) is becoming a really cool trademark of his. Can't wait to see more of his stuff.
  23. Since I get to moderate the movie forum now, I figure I'd start up a new thread, despite the fact that I drank quite a bit tonite... Who are your favorite directors and why? What makes a movie great isn't necesarrily the story itself but how it's told. Plenty of people know who their favorites are, but go back and see what their movies have in common that makes you like them so much. Don't call a director your favorite just because you've heard of them, I want to hear some thematic/stylistic trademarks in their work that you identify with particularly. Guess I should lead if I'm gonna start the thread. Scorsese - Usually does movies about characters that aren't accepted in society (travis bickle, jesus, Rupert Pupkin)and has some of the best slo-motion use in movies, just about every modern director owes some of his style to scorsese... Movie highlights: Taxi driver, goodfellas, raging bull, king of comedy, hell... just about anything.... Kubrick - Don't know where to start on him. Puts humanity under a microscope. Most of his movies are pretty damned deep and everything else, but he never gets pretentious. He considers most of his movies comedies, and most of them are pretty damned funny when you remember em. As complex as his movies can be, it's usually twisted sense of humor that makes them great. choice movies: 2001: space oddessey, Dr. Strangelove, full metal jacket, a clockwork orange Hitchcock - More proof that the best directors are the ones that don't take their jobs seriously. He admitted that his movies had no discernable plots for the most part. Hence the Mcguffin, the object that everybody wants that propels the story, regardless of what it is (secret microfilm, blueprints of some sort, maltese falcon, maltese donut, whatever.) Took average plots and made them great. Most of his movies fall under that catagory. His best are different though. Stuff like Rear Window, Psycho, Birds, The trouble with Harry, and Vertigo have better plots to make you really care what happens to the characters. It's just great to know that the guy that's considered to be one of the greatest directors of all time didn't do deep existential movies, he did hollywood thrillers. New guys: figure I'll throw in new directors I like too, since I cant sleep Darren Arronofsky - Director of Pi and Requiem for a dream and the next batman. Can't say enough about him, he's the master of subjectivity. Went as far as to use splitscreen in requiem to show the feelings of two characters at once. The new batman movie will be the real test of his abilities. Alex Proyas- Director of the Crow and Dark City, all I can say is that these two movies are fucking incredible, and it can't be a coincidence that this guy directed them. He has a definate comic book style (he even frames stuff like a comic book, even in dark city, which isnt based on one like the crow is) and his movies have a texture to them, it shows that he's for real. Even though Arronofsky rocks, I wish Proyas were doing Batman. I have high hopes for him, hope he can make good stuff outside of the sci-fi comic book genre. M. Night Shyamalan - Director of Unbreakable and the 6th sense. This guy is a future master of film. So much attention to detail it's insane. Some of the best use of color and framing in movies I've seen. When this guy puts something on the screen, it's for a reason. Every detail on the screen contributes to the story, it's incredible. He's also pretty good at taking mediocre genres (ghost movie, superhero movie, upcoming alien movie) and making them great. I'll cry myself to sleep if his next one doesn't live up to the others... such potential... too much typing... fingers hurt... I'd love to hear other people's picks, and stuff they've noticed that they like.
  24. Ah, hidden tracks rock. Yeah, on dookie there's that nasty secret song "I was alone I was all by myself noone was lookin I was thinking of you oh yeah did I mention I was all by myself I went to your house but noone was there I went in your room I was all by myself" that's what I remember anyways, correct me if I'm wrong I agree with nick on the two on "Broken" they kick ass... Suck is one of my favorite NIN songs. And it's good to know that someone else has 3eb's second cd def.... Also, on the cd Undertow, tool has an awesome song called "Disgustipated" as a hidden track.... great stuff. "This, is , neccesarry, this, is ,neccesary, life, feeds on life, feeds on this is neccesary... etc ect" ya gotta hear it to appreciate it really, it's great. "Opiate" their first EP has a cool, yet weird as hell hidden track too "I had a friend once who took some acid, now he thinks he's a fire truck, it's ok, untill he pisses on your lighter, kinda smells kinda cool kinda funny anyways... satan satan satan...." One of my favorite staind songs is a hidden track, "Black rain." It's my favorite staind song next to "Epiphany" from their second cd. Also, the counting crows have a GREAT one on "This Desert Life" I think, "kid things" after "St. Robinson in his cadillac dream" (one of my favorites on the cd) "what's that that makes you wanna be lonely, what's that that keeps you sittin at home, he'd always say no no no as if he wanted you to be hungry, well the same things your missin can get you into somehtin else What's there that makes you want to be lonely What's there to keep you sitting at home He'd always say no no no as if he wanted you to be hungry Better leave when to stay is only nothing but being alone what I wanted you to know is Kid things seemed like nothing at all" there's a lot more stuff I could prolly think of, just gotta be less tired and more sober to do so........ so I I'll post later maybe
  25. x-box sucks fookin donkey balls, I'm glad it ain't sellin'. Jet set radio future and munch's oddessey are the only two reasons to get it, and if the X-box doesn't sell, they're bound to port them, so there's really no reason to buy the damned thing. Next gen console war shouldbe between the PS2 and the gamecube, two GOOD systems. :weeps for sega:
