I think, in my opinion, HL1 is probably the best FPS, mostly because of what it did for the genre itself, it was action with a storyline as an affront, rather than an afterthought. Graphically it was excellent too for a late 90's game. I really can't find much fault with it. That too, it brought the glorious art of Crowbar-Fu to the masses.

I couldn't take GOW seriously in single player, i mean, a chainsaw gun, wtf? Good idea and all, but meshing two weapons into one do not a good fps make. I hvae no real reservations or hopes for it other than it'll probably be quite fun online. But as regards the GF silence, can you imagine him saying anything in any of the situations that would have added anything that wasn't already there in the story? I know i can't really. The fact there's, as far as i can remember, no cut-scenes in HL-2 (or maybe 1, not so certain about that though) is something you don't really see in games these days. And i respect them for that. Most FPS games i find put in un needed cut scenes to show they can do graphics as well as gameplay, which i think can be silly. I like how it never deviates from what GF can see.

Sometimes in life the interesting people are the ones that don't say a word rather than ham-handedly munch their way around bad lines and a gray gray world. I think hl and hl2 was, as a story goes in an FPS, excellent. Not overly sure on ep 1 and 2, but as far as the two standalone games go, they're pound for pound some of the best first person shooters i've ever played. Only thing that would really come close for me would be Alien Vs Predator on the pc, and the original unreal tournament.
