Id love to make a thread bout some of the underground/conscious shit i like - Blackstar, The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, or the Native Tongue efforts - but id rather simply have a thread for the sides of hip hop you dont normally here (club, gangsta, homemade-casio-beats-over-some-down-south-bullshit etc).

 

While looking for material for my thread on the Nujabes, i found a lot of fun, mostly jazz-hop shit. id wanted to start this off with one of my first introductions to the sub-genre: Pete Rock's "Pete's Jazz"

just a jazzy, new york instrumental, reminisce of the production i grew up on from guys like DJ Premier. Id not hear much like it again until being put onto Madlib's "Shades of Blue" (tribute to Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue") or again, the Nujabes. Recently though, ive been put onto some more artists in a similar vein, none of which id heard prior, and was very happy to discover, so here's some more if you liked that, try it out & lemme know what you like in particular.

heh. i thought the subject content of this thread seemed familiar. much luv for fat jon. i'm still discovering new stuff from that mega-torrent I DL'd this summer of his and nujabes' albums.

 

the MF DOOM Special Herbs albums are favorites of mine, and i'd guess also fall under this category. I think most of the tracks are simply instrumentals from other albums under his other many aliases.

nice! good on both counts. I sometimes forget DOOM does production work, i wasnt big on the Wu or some other mixes but when he gets together with Madlib, its all quality.

i used to think the genre was more instrumental with some voice sampling, but Cyne, Flying Lotus, some of the Nujabes' more well-known stuff has laid-back vocals like that too, so yeah, id definitely say they fit. feel free to post more like that from them.
