The Bourne Identity

Recommended Posts

Just got home from catching this awesome flick.  But I think it's some kind of on going joke that Junker and IC stay away from the movies I like.  Well screw it  :p  I liked this one and I recommend that everyone go watch it if you have the time.  Didn't realize that Franka Potente was one of the main characters.  She just kicks butt.  Action pack, supense and even a little romance for the sappy dorks like me.  Matt Damon is such a good actor and a lot better than affleck. So here's your chance to rant more opinions and hopefully you will have some good ones.  :wary:

I suppose it can't be helped, comparing Affleck to Damon since they seem to be in more movies together than apart. And with The Bourne Identity and The Sum Of All Fears being of similar styles and genres (suspense thrillers based on popular novels). It might be noted this is Damon first 'Action' role. By the way, doesn't it go without saying that damon is better than Affleck? I have respect for both of them becasue the co-wrote Good Will Hunting. I know it's not exactly 'true' but I think it takes alot more talent to be albe to write a fantastic script than to act it out. It's a shame they don't go for it again (not a Good Will Hunting 2, though J&SBSB made it look tempting, but another movie script together), but maybe they figure it's best to quit while you're ahead.

I heard they're going through a bit've feud, right now, actually ("Uhoh, looks like the honeymoon's over."). It would be nice if they wrote something, though. I think it's what they're both best at. Damon needs to find himself a role he can win an Oscar for, though. He's a helluvan actor.

See, that there pisses me off. When actor go after Oscar-roles. This stunts an actor ablity to pick original innovative ground-breaking roles, because there's the pressure to pick something safe and sure-fire oscar gold. Tom Hanks and Russel Crowe have both fallen prey to this. The do good jobs in good roles, but I've gotten the sense that if they weren't as concerned about getting oscars, they'd be in so damn good flicks. Pick interesting roles and the oscar will follow eventually. Not that that's every happened to Tom Cruise of Brad Pitt (though Pitt was nominateed for his supporting role in 12 Monkeys), not that it's hurt their careers. Damon is doing great in the roles he's picking. It's Affleck that needs the advice.

The reason I loved that conversation was because it was so freaking TRUE! That's why I have more respect for Damon. Still have plenty of respect for Affleck though. No matter what happens, he'll have always co-written Good Will Hunting. I can't wait for Damon's next gay cowboys eating pudding touchy feely picture :D

Gee Will, I don't like dem apples!

Heh...i loved that conversation.  Lion face! Lemon face!

As for Damon's gay cowobys eatin pudding, i havent seen his artsy ones, but did anyone besides me & Mulan see "All the Pretty Horses"?  That movie...was brief.  Actually a bit long, but no transitions whatsoever, felt like anythin that wasnt directly plot was edited to shit.

Bitch, you wathed Batman & Robin like the rest of us, youre just as tainted.  "Youre in the dark lord's realm now, dont get coy!" - Rev. Bill Hicks.

'Sides, just switch the letters around a bit here & there and its "All the pretty whores".  Lil more interested now, aint ya?

Hey, I SAW batman and robin, I didn't like it! But just seeing a film called "All the Pretty Horses" is just...queer! Besides, I could rearrang ethe letters in snow dogs to make it blow dogs, and despite being beastialic porn, would still be more watchable than snow dogs, but that doesn't change the fact that it's snow dogs! All the pretty horses is still all the the pretty horses (unless of courses, it is all the pretty whores. Is it? Is it about whores?).

Gotta go with JMT, there. You think they could have picked a title that appealed to more than just 9 year old girls. And the movie isn't even made for 9 year old girls. No wonder nobody went and saw it.

Damon: Just remember who talked you into doing this shit in the first place. I mean, talking me into Dogma was one thing, but...

Affleck: Oh, I'm sorry I pulled you away from whatever gay serial killer who rides horses and likes to play golf touchy-feely movie you're doing this week.

Damon: I take it you haven't seen Forces of Nature?

Affleck: You're like a child. What have I been telling you? You have to make the safe picture, then you can make the art picture. Then sometimes you have to do the payback picture because a friend says you owe him. ::Pause to look at the camera:: Then sometimes you gotta go back to the well

Damon: Yeah, or sometimes you make Reindeer Games.

Affleck: See, that's just mean.

Thought we were talking about "The Bourne Identity"...

Yeah "All the pretty Horses" was edited to hell and back.  But I think the main point was:

Spoiler

Guy meets girl, guy and gal fall in love, daddy don't like boy, stupid girl don't follow her heart.

The moral of the story:  No matter how much you love oneanother, don't mean shit because in the end you aren't meant to be together.

The story of my life in a nutshell.   ???

Saw this earlier today, it was a pretty cool movie.  If you're in the mood for a fast-paced popcorn action flick, it's perfect.  Cool fights and a fucking awesome car chase, other than those parts it never got boring, Damon and the Girl from Run Lola Run had good chemistry and were funny from time to time, and all the other times it dealt with plot it sped through it, no time for plot here!  Move along!  (The only itme the camera stopped moving at breakneck speed through the whole movie was to build up tension before something crashed through the window/wall/door.)  The plot it did have was cool, it added some humor to have him wandering around having no idea how he's beating everyone's ass and memorizing the license plates on cars and stuff.  One thing that confused me was Julia Stiles' role.... or lack thereof... why did they even put her in this?  Her character had no purpose whatsoever...  Fairly cool movie though, I mean, if you are gonna go see it, it's because you want a cool action movie, and that's exactly what you're gonna get.

***spoilers***

I've heard complaints about the ending, and I just wonder what people expected from it...  You know who he is from the start and nothing's really a big mystery throughout the whole thing.  I would however, like to see a movie about an assasin that doesn't have a moral code that doesn't let him perform his duties while children are present.... I mean, come on...

Well, I've gotten around to seeing The Bourne Identity finally. Good stuff. People were expecting big things from Julia Stilles cause she's a big name. But she played a small part and was basically a living prop. No big deal. Movies need that. If she was ano-nam, nobody would be complaining. She was a flat character, not a round one. And as far as the idea about a moralless assassin, that would be a horrible character. Characters need weaknesses, that's whta makes them interesting.

But does he need the exact same weakness as every other character?  It's cliche.  Granted, stuff is cliched for a reason usually, and lots of movies have used this cliche well, but in this one it's like they expected us to see it as a surprise, I didnt think that part worked very well.  I mean, just because he'll do his job with children present doesn't mean he couldn't be a flawed character, there are other weaknesses a human being could have.  All I know is that if I were a major world leader i'd have a child with me at all times, because that always causes a hitman to change his ways and destroy the group of people trying to kill me.

Don't get me wrong tho, not a big criticism of a popcorn action flick, I'm surprised the plot was as good as it was.

...a complete sidenote from Junker's rant.....

Yeah, fine, its a cliche notion, a la Professional, Replacement Killers, even Scarface amongst many others.  You know what assasian doesnt give a fuck if a kid's present and, in fact, uses his own kid to take hits? Check out Lone Wolf & Cub, as mentioned in the manga thread over in Xavier's.  Suprisngly good.

Ill comment on this movie when i see it, but for what its worth i think Damon's better than a lotta folks give him credit for...still havta see "The Talented Mr Ripley".

Well that's the weakness that creates a conflict in the life of the assassin. I wouldn't be too interested in a movie about an assassin who had no problem killing a man in front of his children, but has a big weakness for, Chanel perfumes and Clinique lipsticks. If your weakness as an assassin is sympathy, it creates an conflict, and that makes it interesting. Granted it can be done very poorly, but there's a reason it's done.

By the way IC, I think Damon gets as much credit as someone who girls drool over can get (being a heartthrob seems to instantly remove a bit of creditiliby as a legitimate actor). He is on my list of instant credit actors (I will have faith in them and will see their movies because I believe in their ability to chose good roles and make good movies) along with Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon, Johnny Deep and a few others.

I actually dont know many chicks who go for Damon, to be honest...so, wait: you mean to say you think Pitt & others would be much better actors if they were hideously deformed? Why does them lookin good work against em, so long as that's not the only reason theyre being cast (like with Bandera's english acting, i think he's usually cast for eye candy or whatever, but not Pitt)?

Why do I even bother diluting myself by hoping that maybe my comments won't be misinterpreted. I think 'well, this could be misinterpreted, but this says what I mean, so I'll post it and if someone asks, I'll explain'.

I was refering to how people give him credit, not me. I said that it seems to take away credibility. I still hear this arguement to this day about Jim Morrison. Was he a genius? Yes, but lots of geniuses when unnoticed. Some people said that Morrison might never have gotten fame without the sex appeal to get him there. This is contrary to, say, Bob Dylan, who has little sex appeal and no voice for singing. The fact that he made it big without that is proof he is a genius. Whatever. It makes some sense, but is not my opinion.

And I've met tons of girls who go gaga over Damon. Can't blame them. I'm straight, but I can still tell that man's a cutie.

mabye they know deep within that they don't have to try as hard when they act... i mean, everyone knows cruise, daemon, affleck, pitt, and bandares.. people just go to their movies to see them. but to get people to watch their movies, a less handsome guy has to act his ass off. i'm not saying these guys are ugly, but some examples are: buschemi, hoffman, pachino, etc..

and... damn that adam garcia!! (chi's drool tool)
