Deadwood

Recommended Posts

alright, so...finally tied this one up.

again, there's bits you car for more than others, like any series, but i guess being a fan of westerns meant i wasnt thrown off by the pacing one bit. Though, the way it builds, season 3 held the most love for me -

Dan's fight with the Captain somehow managed to surpass Bullock & Al's of the previous season, among other moments

- and i really felt the show got room to shine there.

Most western films try to build their tension to a showdown, but outside of my precious Sergio Leone ones (due to both length and storytelling), many are by film's nature compelled to rush it along after a certain point; i think Deadwood's greatest strength for me was that it felt no such need. Each episode more or less equating a day in the town meant that you were there as things progressed and news of events moved, from Merrick's paper or talk from the Gem reaching Bullock's short temper or the like. This culminated in the last few episodes of season 3:

the town was such a powderkeg, i was on the edge of my seat waiting to see who'd make the next move - Hurst? the Pinkertons? fucking trixie? - and that's a feeling again not afforded to film. I'm not sure where the show would've gone the next season, but idve loved to have seen it.

Awesome show, one of my favorites from HBO yet. Though id be lying if i said i hadnt secretly hoped for a history-defying showdown with Bullock, Dan, Al, the Earp brothers & Wu's camp against Hurst's men.

also? Al is the fucking man, i take back anything negative i said about him. I agree with SB's prior statement about his awesomeness.

Swearengen tell truth or Swearengen cocksucker?

Series creator David Milch’s “two-hour movie script has been delivered to HBO,” Ian McShane reveals to TVLine exclusively, before adding with a laugh, “If they don’t deliver [a finished product], blame them.”

McShane, who has a starring role in Starz’ American Gods (premiering April 30), says he’s spoken to Milch “about some of” the script. “I’ll be seeing him for lunch [soon],” he continues. “We’d all love to do it… It would be nice to see all of the old gang again.”

HBO'S LONG-AWAITED 'DEADWOOD' MOVIE TO START PRODUCTION NEXT FALL

It's been over a decade since the hyper-violent Western's abrupt cancellation.

When HBO cancelled its hyper-violent, profanity-filled Western Deadwood in 2006, the network's intention was to give director David Milch the chance to wrap up loose ends in a two-hour TV movie. But years went by with little movement and in 2012 Milch told Vulture he didn't think the movie would ever happen.

Now it looks like he was wrong. TVLine reported Monday that HBO is preparing to begin production on the long-awaited movie in the fall of 2018. Though the site points out that the comeback is not quite official, the news does follow positive comments from HBO executive Casey Bloys over the summer.

“If we can do for the right budget it make sense. We’re taking to directors and we’re getting the cast together, which is not an easy task. Then we’re inclined to do it if we can get over those hurdles," Bloys said at the Television Critics Association press tour over the summer. At the time, Deadline also reported that cast members who hadn't gotten to roll around in the mud for a decade were getting calls about doing it one last time.

Deadwood movie: Robin Weigert says there’s a 90% chance it’s happening this Fall

Quote

Actress Robin Weigert, who played Calamity Jane on the series, told The L.A. Times this week: “It’s safe enough to say it’s happening this fall. There’s a set being built and tax incentives to get it done. A lot of [actors] have signed on. There’s a 90% chance it’ll finally happen.

I really wanted to do a full series re-watch prior to seeing this movie--which is really just a series finale--but I settled for just re-watching the S3 finale. I think if this particular two-hour story had aired closer to the S3 finale over a decade ago my reaction would've been more meh. However, having been 13 years or so since I sat and watched these characters, I judged it from a different perspective. There are some odd choices and a formulaic aspect to the plot, but overall I really enjoyed it. This is the TV equivalent of comfort food, and I'm good with that.
