  1. Not to mention......

when Optimus is pleading for his life in his fight with Sentinel Prime. "No! PLEASE!!" as he clutches at Sentinel Prime. HELL. NO. Not MY Optimus Prime...

    Also

    <embed src="http://www.ebaumsworld.com/player.swf" allowScriptAccess="always" flashvars="id1=81631332" wmode="transparent" width="567" height="345" allowfullscreen="true" />

  2. It was definitely better than part 2, but that's not really saying much. I mean, the projector broke at the showing I went to and the time I spent staring at the blank movie screen for ten minutes while they tried to fix it was already better than part 2.

It felt like they spent more time on boring human stuff in this one than the previous two, but I admit it's been a while since I saw either of them.

There's a good movie in there somewhere. I was upset that this movie had BOTH a shuttle and a Learjet, both of which bear Autobot symbols and neither of them was Skylynx (or any other transformer for that matter).

The one thing that probably bothered me the most was

Murderbot Prime taking out Megatron and Sentinel Prime at the end. People were cheering in the theater while I had my mouth open in horror. Don't cheer for that. It was robo-snuff. I am certain there is a deleted scene where Optimus is dancing around while wearing Megatron's skin.

  3. You had me at 'Scarface in Hell'.

Yeah, That's how I summed it up on the phone to panch, and it's pretty spot on. There's no question Tony Montana was the main influence for Garcia Hotspur, and like Scarface, Hotspurs ethnicity is often terribly offensive, yet somehow likeable!

Initially, much of the banter between Garcia and his sidekick Johnson was groan inducing and I wasn't sure if I even liked either of the characters. However, over the course of the first two acts (that's 2 and 3, as act 1 is just a quick tutorial) both had really endeared themselves to me. Then yesterday after posting I reached a portion called "The Legend of Stinky Crow." If any part of me had still held onto doubts about where I stood on this game, that segment pushed me over the fence into the 'I love this game' camp!

*People have posted this segment on YouTube, but don't watch it!! Out of context I feel it will be spoiled!

  4. The Japanese have had it hard this gen, what with all the outsourcing of properties to sub par western studios or half-hearted, in-house projects all in the name of "capturing the western dollar" (Quantum Theory, Bionic Commando, Dark Void, Neverdead etc, etc, etc).

Based on this, I was pretty much going to get Shadows of the Damned REGARDLESS of how the end product turned out. I mean, Suda? Mikami? Yamaoka? Even if the game ended up being an abject failure it was bound to be a SPECTACULAR failure. And when reviews started to trickle in in the 80-90% range, I couldn't pony up my 60 bones fast enough.

I'm probably between a quarter and halfway through the game at this point and I'm loving it so far. It is however VERY bizarre. There are actually some interesting mechanics using light and dark that haven't been used a million times before in other games, and (at least at this point) the game is still continually adding new elements to mix up gameplay.

The influence of each of SotD's fathers is extremely evident. It plays like Resident Evil 4. It sounds very Silent Hill-esque, even down to the menu sounds. The aesthetic is a weird mix of the 'Rock & Roll' horror of Devil May Cry and the mundane creepy of Silent Hill. Then Suda 51 took the whole package and sprinkled it with copious amounts of his own signature brand of crazy.

  5. Wow. I can't believe I didn't hear a PEEP about this trailer from the E3 coverage. You know, I thought that trailer was actually interesting. I liked the bloody dynamic typography and it seems they're are exploring some dual world scenario which might be cool. The transformation of the world looks good, and the gameplay actually inspires a little hope in me. It helps that I really love that Glitch Mob track they used it the trailer. Huge departure from the typically sonic offereings of the series, but man, if Glitch Mob did the entire soundtrack for DmC, wow. Still, I can't put my finger on it, but something about it reminds me of DMC2.....

Regardless I am intrigued. DmC might not be a complete disaster afterall. Nick, right now, I say we tentatively change the name of this thread to 'Devil Might (not) Cry 5".

Of course, wouldn't THIS be incredible if Capcom could somehow let it happen.....

  6. Super-8-high-res.gif

Saw a free screener tuesday night.

    Hated it.

Very much in the vein of movies like Goonies, Stand by Me, The Explorers, Monster Squad, Flight of the Navigator etc, etc, etc which was totally the intent, and succeeded to an extent. The young actors all did a really great job, the film captured the feel of the era and touched on many of the staples of the aforementioned films.

But god did it DRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAG. Also, I got a lot of mixed imagery/messages from the film that left a bad taste with me.

It was one of those films where I wasn't sure how I felt about it while watching it and shortly after, and upon further reflection like it less and less.

(Here's to hoping First Class gets another week on top of the box-office!)

  7. I find it hard to believe there wasnt already a thread on this!

Great flick. Infinately rewatchable. I've proablly seen it 6 or 7 times! It's where I got my RockBand Karaoke band name: The Chocolate Giddy-Ups!

    Also this:

Adult Swim animated series slated for 2012. Features most if not all of the actors from the film voicing thier characters. Also animated by titmouse (Chirp.) and directed by Carl Jones of Boondocks fame.

    Nice.

Caught a free sneak preview last night. Really liked this one. It's a film that deals with some dodgy science (anyone who's paid attention to the trailers probably knows this), yet presents it in such a way that I am still able to suspend my disbelief (no easy task for me to do!*). Somehow, Duncan Jones is able to make me knowingly swallow some bitter pills while quelling my reflex to call "Bullshit!".

Soon as I get the chance I'm going to throw a thread up on this, as I have more to say on the subject.

*Ask Nick and Panch about my rant on mechanical webshooters in the new Spider-Man.

  9. So maybe Synder isn't someone we'll look to to create new original stories, but directing other people good scripts might still be something he's good at.

This was my big concern when I heard he was to helm supes. 300, great. Watchmen, great. But both were panel for panel adaptations of great books. I wasn't sure how Synder would handle a new or original story that didn't have a very visual source. And Suckerpunch did nothing to assuage my concerns.

  10. Took Panchy to see Sucker Punch for his b-day. Of course he liked it more than I did, but I thought it was more boring than need be. It's basically a hot mess as far as plot, but if you go just to see some short clips of hot chicks dressed like anime babes kicking ass through various amalgamations of geek genres (dragons & ogres, alien robots, samurai demons, & steammpunk Nazis) you should be pleased.

    sucker-punch3.jpg

Saw it Saturday night and I was surprised at how much I hated Suckerpunch. Now I had EXTREMELY low expectations going in, and there were tons of resoundingly negative reviews bubbling up in the weeks before its release, so I shouldn't be surprised right?

I was surprised in that I didn't expect to want to like Suckerpunch. I didn't expect the trappings of an interesting story, or at the very least an interesting idea for one.

I expected schlock, and schlock would not be worthy of my ire.

Suckerpunch's most damning fault is that, much to my surprise, there was so much potential in it and yet, in my opinion, it falls completely on it's face.

  11. Huh, I liked it WAY more than either Adventureland (blah) and ...Infinite Playlist (unfunny). And the plot is pretty straightforward: crazy shit is done by a teenage boy in the name of getting laid love.

    battle-los-angeles-poster-1a.jpg

Sw this one in the theater last night. It was OK; kinda disappointed in it. The action scenes were

meant to reflect "realistic" urban ground combat, but when you've got the SUPER MARINES! it doesn't really ring so true. And you could make the argument the whole film is one long recruitment video for the Marines.

Bottom line: much better than Skyline, on par w/ Tom Cruise's WOTW remake, but not as entertaining as ID4.

Managed to catch this over the weekend. Crap. Hated it. One of the MOST forgetable flicks ive seen in a long time. So much so that the day after, saw the trailer and for a brief moment I was excited to go see it, completely forgetting I had already. Ten times the action of District 9, and a thousand times less compeling.

  12. Is the title really Die-ner (Get It?)? Wow. Still, I gotta see that.

I really should seen this in the theater. I loved it. Can't wait for Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again. Heh.

Didn't care for Machete. Was looking forward to it, and really wanted to like it, but it was so....meh. Not nearly as over-the-top as it needed to be.
