  1. Aren't I the baddie. LOL. :shoot: Call me a blasphemer but I'm not a big Spielberg fan. He's done a handful of decent movies (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Empire of the Sun spring to mind) and then a whole load of average flicks (E.T, SPR, and a lot more). I agree that most war movies are not clean cut one or the other but usually they have a main focus, of which I found SPR to lack. TRL instead had a focus, apart from the hill gunnar scene, the action was limited, which I enjoyed. The graveyard scene in SPR was shockingly bad. Spielberg sometimes does emotion well (Schindler's List, Empire of the Sun) but at other times it just detracts from the whole occasion and you feel disjointed. If it is any consolation, I think Empire of the Sun is the most underrated movie of all time.
  2. SPR went downhill from the opening becah landing. You say Thin Red Line didn't have any direction, I would argue the same about SPR, as it tried to both have action and show the horror of war in unneeded quantities. I prefer war films that try to achieve one or the other. e.g Apocalypse Now - Horror of War Full Metal Jacket - Action Tigerland - Horror of war Platoon - Action I can go on....
  3. HEY, I liked Thin Red Line, that ain't a bad movie. The fact that huge actors only make a cameo was brilliant, nice to see some fresh talent. At the end of the day, it wasn't worse than bloody 'Saving Private Ryan' anyway. As for the new Star Wars, personally I think it can only get more disappointing. It looks like Lucas is going for the teen market with his crap-looking, mushy we-love-each-other-but-your-a-princess-and-I'm-a-jedi angle. They may as well of let Spielberg direct it with him, make a big hash of what was anticipated to be wicked (talking about A.I.). Sorry, just venting frustration. As for anticipated films, I'm just looking forward to seeing 'The Royal Tenebaums'.
  4. Anti-hero's make the best characters. Look at Billy Bob Thornton's character in 'The Man who wasn't there'. He tries taking a risk and it always leads to distastrous consequences. Other fave anti hero's: Ferris Buella The Dude Billy (Buffalo 66) Cher (Clueless) The list goes on...
  5. Hello all guitarees. I have decided to start a topic where guitar queries can be asked and answered, tips supplied, and general recommendations for learning guitar can be swapped. I have not been playing guitar long and like most budding rockers, I'm a bit shit. Still I want to improve and am interested on what people say on the subject, so come along and talk guitars. Be cool people, and lets get callus-developing! :D
  6. Best secret track (other than 'Endless Nameless') has to be off Ash's '1977'. It basically consists of a tape recording of Rick from the band throwing up after coming back after a heavy night drinking and the rest of the band standing around pissing themselves. Really good, especially when Tim Wheeler exclaims in Irish accent, "That's fucking amazing, oh my God that is disgusting..."
  7. Heartless: Huge Nirvana fan. Kinda sad really but I'm a bit obsessed. Got the albums, plus a few bootlegs and rarities albums. Read all the books, Charles Cross' 'Heavier than Heaven' definitely being the difinitive one. But , the creme de la creme is on my wall where I have 2 Nirvana posters put together surrounded by collage of images of Nirvana, Kurt etc collected from about 5 years worth of magazines, NME, Melody Maker, Select, Rolling Stone, Spin, etc. IC: You really gotta see the Come to Daddy video, it's very cool. I like the bit where the ghoul is screaming in the old ladies face, pure quality.
  8. That pong film is the bishiznit. Well met IC.
  9. KoS, by the way, got an interview with Idlewild for a Uni mag on their up-and-coming tour. Sorry, wanted to tell someone who'd appreciate it as a big deal. I'm so hyped. Personally I thought the new single was the dog's, I like their new slightly orchestraic direction, and reckon the new album's gonna be the best yet. Sorry I'm all over the place, but I'm sorta bouncing off the walls.
  10. No good bands anyomore? Get out there people, ya gotta dig a little to find some special stuff. You wasnt soem amazing recent debuts here ya go, Electric Soft Parade- Holes in the Wall Incredible melodic-rock with some electronica chucked in for good measure. Rival Schools - United by Fate Singer of 'Quicksand' leads new rock band, taking emo to a new level. Listen and love. Lost Prophets- Fake Sound of Progress English metallers with attitude. Most of 'em don't drink and they would beat POD to death with their own crusifixes. People, don't give up, look not to the charts, but to alterantive radio, good magazines and word-of-mouth. Go forth and find, scavenge and download, just DO NOT give up. Rant over.
  11. Yo SoF, KoS ain't the only Aphex T fan round here. Personally I'd go for Come to Daddy, just because the video is just a little better than Windowlicker. Nice list BUT, I'd disagree in a few areas. That Prodigy song is no way the best, gotta be Voodoo People surely? Saying Teen Spirit is Nirvana's best song is asking for trouble fro someone like me (a HUGE, and I mean HUGE, as KoS can testify, Nirvana fan). Also, I'd of inserted Beck somewhere in there, probably Devil's Haircut, as well as Primal Scream, Trail of Dead's 'Mistakes and Regrets', ummmmm, Beastie Boys 'Intergalactic' and NIN's 'Closer'. Nice topic though SoF, always gonna cause contention.
  12. I'm just waiting for the next Beavis and Butthead movie. Come on Mike Judge, get a move on. Sorry, just thought of it as I'm trying to learn the 'King of the Hill' tune on guitar. Actually, bit off topic but, is there a thread for posting guitar tips, tabs, etc. If not I would love to start and moderate one. >Winks to and nudges IC
  13. Let me know what you think Irish. Check out the movie as well, it won't spoil the comic as they are pretty different. If you want a cheap alternative to the graphic novels just pick up an 'Eightball' and see what you think.
  14. Not quite sure. Expecting some coarse punchline as the story involves a fly (trouser-zip) and 6 inches but apart from that, no idea.
  15. Most of the comics mentioned so far are comic-book heroes type things. As far as I can see the Realism-type comics have been missed out. Daniel Clowes is by far the leading writer and artist in this field. His most famous is probably 'Ghost World', which got made into a movie released pretty recently, is incredible. He also has invented the funny yet touching 'David Boring' and publishes a few issues of 'Eightball' every year. Check him out people, he's amazing.
  16. Hello there people, just throwing in my two cents worth. Can't believe it took so long to mention the Coen's. They get my vote as the best directors ever. Bit extreme? Maybe. But I can find little flaws. Some people say one-trick-ponies but I just answer 'bollocks' and ask them if they've seen 'Man who wasn't there'. Most haven't. Read a great article in 'Sight and Sound' m,agazine talking about the lighting in that movie and how long it took to rig up various lamps and stuff, especially long for the piano-on-the-landing scene. Also I thought I'd mention some debut directions which I really enjoyed. Steve Buscemi - The Tree Lounge Vincent Gallo - Buffalo 66.
  17. Cheers Junkerseed, yours ain't to shabby either, bit of a fan of Maxx. You a fan of Pi, or just like the pretty flickering images? As a new memeber which topics are the best to hang around at, bit too wide a choice for the poster with no sense of direction?
  18. I asked him, could oysters commit suicide, coz they couldn't really hang themselves... Hey KoS, and hello fellow deiters, I am MyLeakyBucket and yes, I am a Chris Morris addict too.
