I'm lost for words with this album. The follow up to in my opinion one of the bravest and best debut albums ever Deloused In The Comatorium, this is already album of the year for me. Comprising of Cedric Biexler and Omar Rodriguez Lopez of At The Drive-In fame, The Mars Volta have managed to conquer with what I thought would always be a difficult second album (Deloused... was a concept album following the travels of a fictional character named Cerpin Taxt in a week long morphin induced dream world). With only five songs it clocks in at a massive 76 minutes or so. It has everything really, if you were to combine Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Bitches Brew era Miles Davis you aren't even close. The final track Cassandra Gemini clocks in at 31 minutes and 42 seconds. Passive listening this isn't. It showcases insane riffs, saxophone, smooth basslines, frantic drumming, a string section, stunning vocals sang in English and Spainish and Flea playing the trumpet. They are easily one of the most important bands around at the moment. If you are a fan of rock, jazz, blues, funk and electronica then this is for you. Fans of all the aforementioned will revel in it. Sit down or better yet lie down and listen to it.

I'll give it a go but I'm skeptical. I was maybe one of the only ones to not be crazy about DeLoused.

I only heard At The Drive-in when 'Relationship of Command' came out and maybe unlike many I went backwards and bought/DLed 'in/casino/out', 'Vaya', 'El Gran Orgo' and 'Acrobatic Tenement'. Given their full body of work I rate At The Drive-In as one of my top 5 favorite bands of all time, but Mars Volta and Sparta have both proven pretty disappointing.

The way I see them is like the Beatles, Bixler/Rodriguez are Lennon, Jim Ward is McCartney. Together they wrote some great songs but seperately you end up with Lennon-sometimes-good-creative-shit-but-a-lot-of-it-is-wank and McCartney-pop-sensibilities-but-ultimately-not-as-much-creative-substance (Mars Volta and Sparta respectively). The balance of these two forces is what made The Beatles and ATDI so good. So while I enjoyed DeLoused to a point (and Sparta's 'Wiretap Scars' which isn't bad either) they just can't compare to ATDI stuff for me.

I will give it a try in time though, the song lengths don't put me off (considering I rate Godspeed! You Black Emperor's 'Levez vos skinny fists comme antennas to heaven' so highly, 4 tracks, 88 mins, nice!) but they do seem to point to even more musical wanking...

Plus a major beef I have with Mars Volta is that they didn't play 'Inertiac ESP' when I saw em live, apparently because the record company picked it as a single (why would they do something like that, pick the best song on the album as a single? Bastards!), so they'll play 9 minutes of dull wank but not 5 minutes of intense rock?! :D

  • 1 year later...

i am a huge fan of theirs, frances the mute is an awesome album but deloused is far superior... more latin influenced i find, a bit easier on the ears and the album is more complete as a whole, runs together nicely and its also helped along excellently by flea from the chili peppers on bass.....

again, id reccomend them highly, but they are fairly far out there....

on a side note... their vocalist is fucking amazing despite sounding a little like nancy sinatra at times, but thats excuseable with some of the notes he hits....

I love the MARS VOLTA! i could listen to them all day long. Nick you haveDeloused and Frnaces the mute at home... Deloused I think is way better album although FtM has its cool rips and lyrics... Oh btw, and the song you referred to from Rescue Me Is called the Widow from Frances the Mute.

I also loved At the Drive IN. They were pretty kick ass too.

Yeah, had a couple've tracks ArNah put me onto & they're fucking awesome! I've *ahem* acquired most've their gear, & I'm in the procces of getting ATDI as well. Saw3 'em at the BDO this year & they're bloody brill live, oddly remeniscent of Led Zeppelin(well footage I've seen, duh).

they are a band which i am yet to find anyone coming close to for originality, and their live shows are rumoured to be the most lively intense shows around, ive always wanted to see them but theyve neglected ireland so far, i have three of their albums, a rare ep and a demo session of theirs if anyone wants any of their stuff....
