  1. Imax sounds great. I wonder a bit about it tho. Um, hopefully the movies wont be over two hours long cause then they'd have to cut em. For example, they chopped twenty minutes out of apollo 13, and spared us from 20 minutes of dialogue in Episode 2. Matrix Reloaded is 138 minutes long, imdb says, so they have to cut 20 minutes out of it.. Another sort of pain is that the IMAX aspect ratio is 1.81: 1. Which is pretty much square, like a TV. Now I understand that the machines cant hold a certain amount of film over two hours, but who was the dumb fucker who didn't make the aspect ratio similar to normal movies? Anyways, so you'd also get a third of the picture chopped off that way... So as brilliant as it would look, you have to take into account that you're missing a third of the picture and 20 minutes worth of movie. So, either way, we watch reloaded on smaller screens first, and then do IMAX (now dont you think for a second that a bit of butchering is gonna keep me from seeing it on IMAX). Now, hopefully, they shot matrix revolutions to suit Imax, meaning keeping it under 2 hours and not shooting it in widescreen. But I'm checking imdb and they havent released the length or aspect ratio of revolutions. So, I'm all for Imax, but the wachoiski brothers are apparently ignoring IMAX's limitations as they film it and dealing with cuts later. So I figure IMAX should be a good treat after we see these movies the way they were meant to be seen. I mean, we're gonna see these movies more than once regardless, we might as well see it complete first, then see it again to soak up visuals.
  2. A new one that I've been looping over and over, also gettiung lots of play on college radio stations is "Yoshimi battles the pink robots p.1" by the flaming lips... this one is a must hear, really catchy. "Those evil natured robots - they're programmed to Destroy us - She's gotta be strong to fight them - So she's taking lots of vitamins - cause she knows that It'd be tragic, if those evil robots win - I know She can beat them... "
  3. huh? spiffy, dont be so quick to judge... ya sound like you've seen it already. Yahve's dead on in saying that it starts off like an agatha christie remake. Hmm, and now that I think about it, I can't say much about the camera use cause my ass was sitting in the front row, I think I remember one really good sort of tracking shot where it glided through what all the characters were doing, but damned if I could be a good judge of it from up there.
  4. And now he's doing more serious stuff like this and "Max" and it really doesnt seem to be that much of a stretch for him. It doesn't feel like he's trying to branch out for different types of roles... it just seems natural.
  5. Just got out of a free screening of this provided by FIU, and this one is fun fun fun. I was expecting something much more serious, but I'm pretty happy with what I got. As far as plot goes, I'll just reveal the premise, a buncha people end up in a motel due to random circumstances and have to stay the night, people start dying one by one. It ends up being a helluvalot different from what you expect, you really can't accuse this one of being predictable. As far as the acting goes, Cusack carries the movie as surely as Atlas carries the heavens. He's got enough presence to fill ten motels, and the movie wouldn't be nearly as good without him. With the exception of Liotta, who does a great job, the rest of the cast is just sort of there. They're all tolerable though... except for Amanda Peet. This woman needs to like... not make movies. She couldn't act her way out of a Calvin Klein commercial and even with slick direction and sparse dialogue from her character, she still manages to annoy me with really flat, shitty delivery of her lines. Get this woman out of my movies! Direction and writing were solid. Now when I say the writing was solid I don't mean that the movie is plausable and makes all kinds of sense. But the writing was very twisty turny and fun. Not too hard to follow, however long the leaps in logic were. It was directed like any other movie, nothing special, but uh, the guy didnt fuck up the script, so there's a lot to be said for that. It even managed to be a bit scary at points, a couple of tense moments really had me smiling. All in all, the main word here is fun. Not as serious as the previews make it out to be, but I'm real glad that the trailers didn't spoil anything. About as netertaining as a movie can get, it's not a gem that I'll force people to watch and buy on DVD and all of this, but I think it's well worth the price of admission, and perfect to watch with a group.
  6. http://www.theonion.com/onion3915/dvd_collection.html fuckin code buttons dont do anything when I click em, but um, this article is somewhat relevant and just plain funny...
  7. Eh, I agree, she's better than the britney alternative. And as much as I hate the wannabe punk thing, it's not so bad when you think about it. These kids buy up avril lavinge, start saying that they like punk music (tho they've prolly never heard any) and before you know it, they might have a NOFX or less han jake cd in their hands. But if she has anything else thats like that fucking "sk8ter boy" song she can go fuck herself, that shit was just as bad as the britney alternative.
  8. god I hope that was a joke... here's another hint, they dont suck!
  9. no no no! Linkin park bows down to this band, probably prays to them every morning
  10. Everyone's favorite depressive, robert smith with the Cure's "Inbetween Days" well, these guys aren't exactly a ball of sunshine either, here's a hint, they got a new single out. "the shade is a tool, a device, a savior see, i try and look up to the sky but my eyes burn "
  11. I think our national anthem should be "Jesus built my hotrod" by ministry... but that's just me.
  12. did you know that the longest attraction in disney is a 45 minute ride about energy starring ellen degeneres and bill nye the science guy at epcot? well now you know. :O
  13. Yes yes yes, a big movie outing that's really worth having! Can't wait, we need 12:00 passes in advance and stuff.
  14. ugh, feel like shit today... I'll never eat chicken sandwiches and sausage egg bicuits from 7-11 ever again :ill:
  15. So.... I guess I'll get back to you all in 60 hours or so.... fuckin 56k. First I'm gonna check the obscure foreign video store tho, they have lots of stuff. I'm usually opposed to dling shit on Kazaa, but if I can't find it in the bloody country I'll make it an exception.
  16. No, but I really wanted to see son's room, it was playing an hour away from me for like a week, guess I'll have to rent it now. This one was really cool tho. The setting is somewhat similar to "Shanghai Ghetto" which was about Jews fleeing to Shanghai and trying to make a living there. Never saw that one tho.
  17. I found the one theater in miami playing this sucker, conveniently located next to FIU's biscayne bay campus so I decided to check it out. Very very good stuff. Nowhere in Africa is about a Jewish family in the late 1930's that escapes from germany and settles in Africa. It's generally about how they learn to live in the country and the families problems and struggles and all this. Sure, I don't think many of you all on the board dig this family drama stuff much, but if ya do at all, this handles it's characters really really well. The movie is very real, the characters are really complex, and don't behave the way you expect movie characters to. The photography is nuts, they have a beautiful country to work with and they take full advantage. So, basically, this movie is one of the subtler ones. Nothing flashy about it at all. The ocassional wankish moment if you're really cynical, but they handle everything very well (racial tolerance, beauty of the country, etc). It grew on me as I watched it, ended up caring for the characters and I just really got into it. So, I don't know about it winning an oscar, but as far as the other nominees I saw, it beats the shit out of "Crime of father amaro" the glorified soap opera, and was overall a fine movie. Catch it if you like the sound of a really good, subtle drama in an amazing setting. If you find this kind of thing boring, this movie wont convert you.
  18. she's not a girl who misses much.... doo doo doo doo doo doo.... oh yeah
  19. If you were wondering what James Cameron has been up to since he directed Titanic, well, here it is. Ghosts of the Abyss is a rather short (but very good) documentary on the Titanic. It's shot entirely in 3d, and it's best viewed in Imax, but normal movie theaters provide 3d glasses as well (they work like the plastic disney 3d glasses). I saw it in a normal theater, and the 3d worked fine. Basically, Cameron felt like going back to the titanic after the movie and really checking things out. He invites Bill Paxton along, and they go about inventing new techniques for capturing things at insane depths. They inspect the Titanic inch by inch, locating the rooms of specific residents, and telling their real stories. It's amazing how much they know about what happened on the titanic. It's very very well done, and you feel like you're right there with them as they go through some pain in the ass stuff and come up with some fucking cooooool inventions to film this thing. I went in not really caring much about the titanic at all (though I am one of the few who admits to loving the movie), I just went cause I'm a fan of Cameron, and halfway through, I was immersed, I was genuinely interested in everything they were saying. And the 3d is no gimmick. Not only is it the neatest fucking thing you've ever seen, but it's very utilitarian. Besides a couple of times where they stick stuff in your face for fun, it really helps with this picture in picture thing tehy had going on where you'd see three camera angles or so on screen at the same time. Other than that, it just really helped with the immersion, and the splendor of it all. I'm not ready to call 3d the new wave of filmmaking or anything, but I think this movie shows that it could be a very cool niche for those that wont abuse it. But yeah, I was suprised at how cool this movie was. Like I said, I coulda given a rats ass about the titanic when I walked into the theater, but I was glued to my seat the whole time.
  20. Yeah, well, it was entertaining, so it's not entirely not worth watching. I thought the reviews were a bit harsh, I'd like to know what someone else thinks tho.
  21. Well, I've never seen the pumpkins live myself (goddamit!) but compared to the insane amount of recoded live material I have, they ain't too far off. Best thing about the pumpkins live is that they'd turn songs like Silverfuck into 20 minute long solos, and Zwan did that here. So, I guess pumpkins were better when it came to each individual song, since they'd been around longer, most of their songs sounded different live, while a bunch of zwan's songs sounded just like the cd, but Zwan was right up there with em as far as the highlights are concerned.
  22. I finally saw zwan live and holy fucking shit they are amazing! Corgan goes as nuts in Zwan as he did in the Pumpkins. They started off playing a few songs straight, like they are on the album, then they did a cool extended version of "honestly" and they played "Dont let me down" off the dvd and then they went into the absolute highlight of the night, and of of the best performances I've ever laid ears upon, "Jesus, I". This song was fuckin nuts. They started off slow, like on the cd, then Paz and Matt Sweeney (Bassist and guitarist) dont just sing back up, they harmanize, so it's funny, and it also just sounds great. The song really starts off, and they jam pretty well, and then they get past playing the cd and Billy starts going nuts. Holy fuck that man is insane. He really is one of the best guitarists alive. After he loses it for a while, they seguey into "God's gonna set this world on fire"... the funnest, coolest live song on earth. God, I wish I could describe how cool that fucking song was. Altogether the medley lasted like 20 minutes and just left everyone in the audience creaming their pants. And Jimmy Chamberlain is the best drummer in the fuckin world, than man has a third arm that he aint showing us. Other highlights were Mary star of the sea (hell, any sone where Billy solos for 10 minute), Broken Heart (paz with a violin is too cool), and the second encore. The second encore was just unreal. They come out again, and Billy brings out a small, old, bald guy with a leather trenchcoat on. He introduces him as "My hero, the guitar god, my dad"!!!! Only time I heard of billy's dad coming out was to help with the last song of the pumpkin's last show. So his dad comes out, straps on a guitar, and start's singing and playing a cover of "I've got a real bad feeling my baby dont love me anymore", an old classic rock song. This guy was the epitome of cool, and he could really play too. He played for 10 minutes or so, then Billy started to solo, then they stood in frotn of eachother and traded solos.... one of the coolest moments on earth, they finished off just both going crazy on their own. That was really fuckin amazing, and lucky as hell that his dad came out here in miami. So, I was not dissapointed AT ALL by Zwan. They put on one of the best shows I've ever seen, and that includes on video.
  23. So, after over a year of studios picking up and dropping this movie (supposedly due to too much gore) it finally comes out, Rob Zombie's very own B-movie. And the verdict is..... eh, it's ok. It's certainly disturbing, it's got dead fetuses, crazy clowns, deadly hicks, and people being buried alive in bunny suits. If you just like seeing a bunch of fucked up shit, this one's for you. As far as the gore goes, man you can tell they cut the fuck out of this. It gets to the point where almost every time a person is killed in a relatively gruesome way, they cut to grainy, handheld footage of the killing where you see pretty much nothing. I don't see how this movie was gonna be an NC-17, they really must have toned it down for release. As a result of this, and Zombie's incompetance as a filmmaker, this is the most discombobulated movie I've seen in my life. He'll go from a shot of people walking to a phone booth, then cut to some grainy footage from an olh horror movie for absolutely no reason, then cut right back. There's more clips from old horror movies than there is new horror movie in here. And when violence occurs, (which is quite often) and they cut to that weird grainy footage, it makes you feel like you're looking at a flashback or something, but you're not, it's happening right then, and then when the person is dead they cut right back to normal movie style again. It looks like they cut and pasted a bunch of unfinished chunks to make this thing. Acting is bad all around, everybody was annoying except for a Clown guy (most interesting character in the movie gets the least importance in the plot, btw). Everyone else is just annoying. The villians are just annoying hicks, and the main characters just exchange shitty dialogue. Great set design all around, lots of cool visuals (none resulting from the camera work tho) coming from the costumes and stuff too. This is the stuff Zombie is good at. The end is especially really cool (movie woulda been a lot better if it were all like the end fourth), cooool monsters and a great set. There are also some funny jokes, granted the other 9/10 of the jokes were dumb, and the same goes for scares, I think I counted 2 good ones, but they try lots and lots of times. The movie wasn't altogether bad. It was entertaining, and lots of the ideas were over the top enough to be cool. If you're a horror buff, you'll like a lot of the references Zombie puts in the script.... but then iif you're a horror buff you'll realize that it's just a Texas ChainSaw Massacre retread and you'll have see a thousand better B-movies. What Zombie shoulda done is made a movie with somebody. He coulda done the costumes, art direction, etc and let somebody who knows what they're doing write and direct. Maybe this one will be better on an unrated DVD. Some real gore woulda made this one a lot cooler. Hmm, watching it finally makes me wonder if gore was the reason it was shelved for so long... maybe it just wasn't all that great?
  24. I absolutely loved conan. I dont see why someone wouldn't. One of the only decent fantasy movies out there.
  25. Ozma fucking rules. I've seen em live 3 times, twice opening for weezer, and they are a damned fine live band. Best ozma moment ever/one of my best concert moments ever: They're playing warped tour to a really good audeince of fans, they get halfway through their 30 minute set and play "Eponine" an energetic sing-along fan favorite that they only play live. The chorus is easy enough that even those who'd never heard it are singing along at this point, the song hits the climax and immediately IT STARTS POURING! A huge grin appears on the singer's face as he belts out the chorus like he means it. They finish the rest of their set with the tetris theme and natalie portman, crowd going nuts the whole time in the pouring rain and mud. That was fuckin amazing.... dinghy was there too, but she's never on the board, but needless to say now she's an ozma fan. Damned fine band. Another good one is "Coffee Shop Girl"
