Cathy
I agree, Jax. As a woman, I totally don't agree with it, but hey, I guess it makes for great t.v. The episode was weak compared to the event of the last, but the season as a whole was fantastic. Let's see how many awards it will win this year. Mr. Hakujin
Well, the season finale was good, but with the season as a whole being as good as it was, I was expecting something really above and beyond, perhaps a big event like what be saw in the previous episode, but nothing like that came. If I had been watching without knowing what was a season finale and what wasn't, I would have guessed last weeks episode to be a season finale and this week's to be a run of the mill, middle of the season episode. Anyways, looks like Don might be up to his old tricks. Heh, again, I find myself against the stream w/ this show. Only this time I REALLY liked the episode and everyone else was "meh" over it. Well, it was more emotional upheavals for our characters than anything else. . . Peggy: Will she name Virginia-Slims? Likely. Movin' on up! Glad they had her back and got to talk w/ Don. I think she'll show up sporadically (Betty Draper style) next season. Joan: She's moving in to Lane's old position rather nicely, he taught her well. The shot of the partners on the empty floor was magnificent. Megan:Poor little rich girl. Her mom is harsh in her delivery, but perhaps not too far off the mark. Megan sells out her friend on co-opts the opportunity for herself. Don is succeeding at work and she wants a success to call her own, so she quits advertising to act. She wallows in failure for a short time at acting and begs her hubby to help her out. She went down a few rungs for me this episode. Roger: Never wanted to see that much of him, but(t) whatcha gonna do. That scene w/ Megan's mom was fantastic. I'm not sure if him partaking in the LSD alone was a growth moment or not. On one hand he's running away from his sadness on the other he did it alone w/out the "mothering" he was searching for. Pete: He's like the Joffrey of SCDP, in the sense that people seem to like hitting him, not in the sense he has any real power. That speech he gave in the hospital was either a pile of self-centered manure or one of the greatest explanations for infidelity ever verbalized. I can't decide. Either way, it seems he's being faced w/ a choice--be like S1-S4 Don Draper or not. Don: So deep down he knows/believes he's got something rotten in him. The tooth was a wonderful metaphor for his moral decay. Is Megan his "spiritual dentist" or will he go back to his old ways w/ the young lady at the bar? Weiner directed this episode and I think it's a brilliant cliffhanger, but perhaps he already gave the audience the answer. It seems as if Don has put his wife's needs above his own, he saw something in her film reel that caused him to change his mind (Talent? His love for her?) about Megan and get the part. Hooray for Don, our protagonist has "grown." He triumphantly exits the sound stage, where he left the make-believe world and enters the real world--a bar. It's here where the real Don dwells. Looks like Megan didn't quite extract all the rot out of Don's soul.

Reverend Jax
Peggy: Will she name Virginia-Slims? Likely. Excellent insight. According to Wikipedia, Virginia Slims are a Philip Morris brand (except they are called Altria now) introduced in 1968, and according to Wikipedia, this episode took place in March 1967. Considering how long it takes a major company to roll out a product from early development all the way to market, I'd say you are 100% on point. Pete: He's like the Joffrey of SCDP, in the sense that people seem to like hitting him, not in the sense he has any real power. That speech he gave in the hospital was either a pile of self-centered manure or one of the greatest explanations for infidelity ever verbalized. I can't decide. This is going to sound like a douchey, attempt-at-wit retort, but I mean it seriously: Can it be both? Don: So deep down he knows/believes he's got something rotten in him. The tooth was a wonderful metaphor for his moral decay. Is Megan his "spiritual dentist" or will he go back to his old ways w/ the young lady at the bar? Weiner directed this episode and I think it's a brilliant cliffhanger, but perhaps he already gave the audience the answer. Looks like Megan didn't quite extract all the rot out of Don's soul. I think he may have lost some respect for Megan when she asked him for help so she could get a role in a commercial. I'm predicting Don is back to his old ways.
Mr. Hakujin
Nicely disected, Chris. You hit the nail on the head with every character. Cheers, Cathy. But what's a butha gotta do to get a +1 up in this piece? This is going to sound like a douchey, attempt-at-wit retort, but I mean it seriously: Can it be both? I suppose so. I think he may have lost some respect for Megan when she asked him for help so she could get a role in a commercial. I'm predicting Don is back to his old ways. I watched the AMC behind the scenes for this episode after I typed up my long post above, and apparently I was a little off point of the writer/director's intentions for that studio shot. I'm not saying I was wrong (That's the great thing about good TV or art in general--it's saying multiple things on different levels and is open to different interpretations.); however, it seems Don wasn't really osing respect for Megan by giving her the part (after all, he didn't know of her duplicity against her friend like the audience). He knew she was talented and by giving her the part he'd be "losing her" to acting. In essence he was letting her go. I guess that's why the phrasing of the woman at the bar's questions, "Are you alone?" Technically he wasn't, but really, he kinda was. At least in the sense of being "wed" to Megan. the division of joy
I've stared to watch this. Nearly finished season 1 and I'm loving it. The scene where Betty starts shooting at the pigeons has been the standout moment for me as it broke entirely with her character (or at least my opinion of her) and made her awesome. Cathy
It only gets better & better, DOJ.
the division of joy
So I've been told. The first few episodes were good, but a lot of it smacked of "look how sexist we all are". The characters are starting to get a little more fleshed out and there are some story arcs brewing that I'm looking forward to seeing play out. AMC are straight up owning television lately, and I don't mind it.
Mr. Hakujin
I was only 1/2 joking/begging there, Cathy. Thanks for being awesome. DOJ, I'm sure you know this already, but we're not really using spoiler tags up in here, especially for this season's finale, so be cautious. I've stared to watch this. Nearly finished season 1 and I'm loving it. The scene where Betty starts shooting at the pigeons has been the standout moment for me as it broke entirely with her character (or at least my opinion of her) and made her awesome. Oh, snap! I forgot all about that scene. I picked up the first three seasons and really need to find time to go back and watch 'em all w/ the commentary. Betty got less and less sympathetic/likable for me as the series went on. Wait until you get to S5 and see how much she has and hasn't changed. And you're also right about AMC putting out quality stuff across the board. I didn't get into the western, Hell on Wheels, but Panch swears by it. I've also heard good things about Rubicon even though it only went one season. The Killing is good as well--just don't think you'll get any real answers by the end of season one, ya know, like pretty much everyone watching it as it aired did.
the division of joy
Not watched the killing as of yet, but its on the list. Have seen the original series (both seasons) its based off of, so there isn't really much surprises for me, unless they're unfaithful. Fun note, in the original series, the main female is Sarah Lund. Back on topic, I've generally ignored everything said in here as I saw not one spoiler tag. I shall keep this up until I finish season five. Mr. Hakujin
It's a pretty lame parody, but it does have some of Roger's best lines from S6... http://youtu.be/6GaHmdLrnZk Except for the one down his backside. Sorry, Panch. This one is kinda old, so it may have been posted before. but I never realized Don was so damned inattentive. http://youtu.be/WsJSRP7cZVo Edited June 16, 2012 by Mr. Hakujin What? Cathy
http://blogs.amctv.com/mad-men/2012/06/critics-choice-awards.php Christina Hendricks Wins Second Critics' Choice Television Award Last night the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA) hosted the second annual Critic's Choice Awards and Mad Men's Christina Hendricks was honored with her second consecutive win of Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for the role of Joan Harris. The actress faced stiff competition for the win, beating out such heavyweights as Christine Baranski (The Good Wife), Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire), and AMC's own Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad). The award is part of three garnered by AMC this year -- the most of any cable network -- with Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston (Walter White) and Giancarlo Esposito (Gustavo Fring) picking up wins in the Best Actor in a Drama Series and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series categories, respectively. Reverend Jax
So the season 6 premiere was last night. Par for the course episode, this series has yet to lose steam. A lot of crazy shit happened in 1968, historically speaking. I'm sure a lot of it will play a role in the episodes' stories.

Mr. Hakujin
Oh shit, I didn't know they put and end date on this series yet. Great episode but not nearly enough Joan. Can someone clue me in to where it fit? I'm guessing right after old Jonesy survived his brief encounter w/ death. Also, this explains why Don wa sbeing so friendly to the surgeon. AT first I thought it was b/c he respected his profession so much, but now I'm thinking it has more to do w/ him feeling guilty for shtupping his wife. Some other observations and questions regarding S6E1-2... So I get the big theme of this episode is death or mortality, but why the fuck does Don not want to acknowledge this beach side wedding? He doesn't want to think about the way he got out of Korea? Maybe he feels guilty about it still--and the fact this kid has 8 months left in 'Nam is too much for him to handle emotionally? I'm not sure. Is that why he showed up to Roger's mother's funeral as a retching drunk? My guess is it has to do w/ Don's disgust for himself as shown in that "missing" scene I had cut from the version I DL'd. Sad to see Sally completing her transformation to the Dark Side and being a total Betty clone. It could also be her age contributing to her overall cuntiness, and I hope she grows out of it. Betty's trip to NYC to rescue Sally's run-away friend was a good subplot. Roger's plot was wonderful. Him breaking down when he finally did was a genius bit of writing helped by a great performance. I saw it as him more weeping for himself. He looked at this shine kit that belonged to a man no one seemed to really care about. Roger realized his mother was the only woman who truly loved him and now that she's gone who will remember him? And that sadness was what was too much to bear for him. That's what I read in to it at least.
The NZA
season 2 now, though i watched a few from 3 by accident. looked up Meditations in an Emergency (the poetry book Draper was eying, then reading), this was the exert he read: Now I am quietly waiting forthe catastrophe of my personality to seem beautiful again, and interesting, and modern. The country is grey and brown and white in trees, snows and skies of laughter always diminishing, less funny not just darker, not just grey. It may be the coldest day of the year, what does he think of that? I mean, what do I? And if I do, perhaps I am myself again.
Reverend Jax
Chris, that scene was towards the end of the episode. So Nick, if you're in season 2, presumably you like it enough to not have given up yet. You digging it?
The NZA
i do indeed; i knew going into it the era/setting was interesting, but it's great character stuff...even weasely characters i don't like at all, i'm interested in their plight. that doesn't happen much on these ensemble shows.
