The NZA
ok so yeah, this thread is largely aimed at Chiefy and Yahven, tho any who know bout this stuff are invited.... Thanks to Chief, i recently formatted my drive, and installed a fresh windows 99 2000, and everythings good, runnin quicker & less bogged down, but a few things... 1) I cant change my workgroup to join "Fight Club" with spiffytee & chi-chan...i thought it was a permission issue (i log on as "Irish Cowboy", in the gropu Administrators), but even root admin has the box where you'd change your workgroup blocked out...i installed all the networking stuff from the win2k CD, why ami not allowed to change this? 2) My vid card (an archaic Voodoo 3) is worryin me...itll lock if its made to change it up, like exiting a game. I got drivers from Voodoo for (basically) my card, but if i go to install them, windows warms me not to, and says if theyre wrong the device wont work. Should i roll the bones? 3) ...i need office.... other minor shit, like i gotta bicth at MS for my mouse's drivers, but that's bout it. Oh! Im back on IE, since i cant find Opera reg'd, which is ok i guess cause it was too slow a browser...shame hto, it was amazing for popups. Christ, i got like 2 programs installed just by goin to suprnova Any ideas, techies?
BigChiefSlapaho
1) I think you need to be logged on as the Administrator account to change the workgroup. Not sure on that one. Have to be there... 2) Voodoo3's suck. 3) I'll get you the copy of office.
The NZA
Yeah, ill have you look next time youre here, i tried loggin in as admin, still didnt give me the workgroup option.. Dont be jealous of my Voodoo 3's cutting edge technology. There's 16 megs of RAM or so on it. Think about it: Strider for the Sega Genesis was like 12 megs, and that game was fucking beautfiul. You never told me if i should roll the bones with the drivers! MORE QUESTIONS!! 1) How do i make my computer stop counting all that RAM? 2) Where does archived Outlook Express mail go? I think i have it, its a folder of 53 MB of all the acrhive folder names, with .dbx extensions or some shit, just not sure where to put it back. 3)did you find your office disc? ps
BigChiefSlapaho
Ok, the RAM count, I discovered, is actually a good thing. It allows you to troubleshoot bad sticks of memory. It sucks that yours counts up 3x... mine does to. You can just hit escape to skip it, or go into the BIOS and turn the QUICK POST or QUICK BOOT option to ENABLED. It's preferred if its DISABLED, tho. BigChiefSlapaho
Outlook Express archives are set to compact to a file called ARCHIVE.PST in your profile's personal files. It's hard to find. Best thing is to go into your Outlook settings and redirect your archives to a location that you'll remember.

MetalHeart
aaaaaah ok. When I was at work, Cj was naughty and downloaded some porn ( hehehe) and apparently he got a bad one or something, b/c everytime you try to open up Explorer, it downloads all this crap to the desktop, and also installs all of these damn useless toolbars to Explorer, and like, 5 popups will come up periodically (now i don't usually use E, I'm partial to mozilla firefox, but you know, the option is there if i wanted to use E) and I don't know what all crap is now on my computer, etc. Cj and I have StopSign, a virus and spam protector, and we've run it twice since then and cleaned up a little but whatever it is, it's still on here. Also we have Spybot, and that's been ran a few times. I don't know much about computers, and our Comp-wise friend Paul won't be able to take a look at it for another week or two, so based on my horrible description of what's wrong, what should we do? Should we say goodbye to our porn and delete anything that might still be the source of it? (of course we got rid of the original porn that brough all this shit). bleh. I just wanna watch my pr0n in peace :(:(:( haha.
defgoddess
do you have the updated version of spybot? also, i would download ad-aware like chief mentioned before. it's better, in my opinion. it might slow down your comp a tad, at least it does to mine, maybe you have more than 1.3ghz though (jeez i'm such a dinosaur!... ??? lol)
MetalHeart
We don't have the updated SpyBot... it wasn't exactly paid for lol. We got it off a friend. : D

Aartemys
My stupid-ass brand new computer has had this little icon on the quick toolbar that's a little computer with and x on it, when I click on it, it opens up the network connections window and it says "network cable unplugged"... ? I don't have a network cable, plugged or unplugged...and that crap has been there since day 1, since I plugged the damned computer into the wall...
BigChiefSlapaho
Ok, check it. That little icon is the status icon for your network card. You HAVE a network card, you're just probably not plugged into anything right now. If you go into Network Connections, and go into your Local Area Connecction, you can disable that little icon. It usually just tells you diagnostic stuff, like network speed, your IP address, stuff like that. Perfectly normal for Windows 2000+
RobitussinEF
Where do i find my IP address? Questions from the office. HA HA!
BigChiefSlapaho
Ok, there's an internal IP address and an external IP address. I'll explain. If you're in a network at an office, you have an IP address for communicating inside the office with other PC's. It's called a Private IP. You can find your private IP address by clicking START -> RUN and typing "cmd" and clicking GO. When the DOS prompt comes up, type "ipconfig" and hit enter. You can also find someone elses IP by typing "ping %computername%" where %computername% is the name of the PC you're trying to reach. Now, if you're connected to high speed internet then your network has an IP address to connect to other networks & websites. This is an External IP. You can find your external IP address at www.whatismyip.com

SuperEeyore
I am having issues with my NEW LAPTOP. My sister decided to run an update on my laptop and now it's running beyond slow. I defragmented it, cleared all cookies, cleared the history and I also deleted all the files. It is still going UBER slow. What do I do?
daytripper
First, do you have a spy-bot program installled? I recommend spy-bot search and destroy and Ad-aware. Two excellent and free programs. And double the security. Next step. Check your startup folder to see if any programs snuck in. That hurts start up time. Are there any icons in the bottom right hand side of the toolbar? You can try to go to the program's options and disable that quicklaunch icon. Finally press the windows+R key and typein msconfig and go to the services tab. Hide all mS services and see what your pc is running in the background. Also peek at the startup tab too. Windows Service pack 2 come with new pop up blockers and firewall features. These extra features bog down your internet connection a bit. If the only problem you have is online, you might to also peek at this in control panel>MS shield
