Just Cause

the division of joy

This game just screams awesome to me, its an edios release and the size and playability factors of it all look to put GTA to shame, the graphics too make it look amazing, here is what is said on the offical website for it

San Esperito, an island Nation, has come to the attention of the Defence Department by virtue of its attempts to purchase enriched uranium on the world market. Not a good sign. Nobody buys El President’s lame excuses that he wants to make San Esperito energy self-sufficient within a decade – no, it’s clear he’s buying this stuff for weapons. Like all dictators, he’s dreaming of WMD.

Nobody knows what San Esperito’s military ambitions are but it doesn’t matter: regime change is the only option. Of course, the operation has to be completely covert, no fingerprints, the US totally uninvolved. There are all sorts of secret deals, arrangements and embarrassments that could be exposed if any official connection became known, what more the power balance between the military, drug barons, police, and oppositional guerrillas is very delicate, maintained only by a very fragile bond of fear and insecurity. This is a job for the Agency. And if it’s a job for the Agency, then it’s a job for Rico Rodriguez!

With 89 vehicles at your disposal choose from choppers, boats, cars, bikes, mini-subs or jets to explore 1,025 Km² of the tropical island of San Esperito.

Skydive, parasail, machine-gun, car-jack, base-jump and bazooka your way through missions as you lead a nation to freedom.

Your playground - 1,024 sq kilometres of mountains, jungles, beaches, cities, and villages to explore, quite possibly the largest environment ever seen in the gaming world.

Freeform gameplay - approach missions in any way you like, or break off from the fight and enjoy exploring the islands landscape.

Massive selection of vehicles - Numerous varied, exciting land, sea and air vehicles.

Wealth of missions - story missions, side-missions, bonus missions and many more all ensure there is plenty of action spread throughout the islands.

Stunts - jump from vehicle-to-vehicle, parachute, parasail, skydive and base-jump.

Province Control - change the balance of power in the game world by building alliances with the local guerrillas and drug cartel.

Support team - Sheldon and Kane, two top secret US goverment agency field operatives, will provide you with reconnaissance info, extraction and vehicle drops.

Avalanche EngineTM - procedurally generated landscape delivers a huge game world with an incredibly high level of detail while eliminating loading times.

i cannot wait for this game to come out.... it looks... stunning

Yup, I posted about this in one've the next-gen threads. Apparently you can steal a car, hop in a plane, take it up to 10000 ft then freefall, 'chute at the last possible second & land in the car you originally stole: All in about 30 seconds. PS3 comes out here Nov, apparently a world-wide release, but I think IU'll get this for 360 since it's apparently not coming out onna Wii.

a few months on... i bought just cause.. and was bored by it... mebbe my hopes were too high, but there was something just... bland about it... and annoyingly twitchy...

anyone else get this?

you werent the only one let down by the final cut, dodge. I was sold on this as a Che meets GTA series type thing, but a few hours in, i put it down and havent managed to pick it up again. The story's bland, and the enginge is nowhere near as tight as Rockstar manages.

Hit/collision detection strikes me as a joke, and even with the vast jungle and goals and such, i feel no incentive to keep playing. Iroincally, i got it the same day as i got Bully by Rockstar, and spent the next week on the latter instead, without expecting to.

People need to just face it, there is no GTA killer, it's the top dog for a reason and trying to beat it by copying it isn't going to do anything. I mean GTA stands on the beaten and bruised bodies of Driv3r, both True Crime games, Roadkill, Saints Row (the supposed GTA killer), and countless others. The only one that managed to be truly great was the one that didn't make itself up to be anything to do with GTA and that was Mafia. The rest are shit, I mean yeah Saints Row was fun for a few minutes but the novelty wore off fast.

Fie on you and your hating ways Baytor.

YES Just Cause was an embittering & disappointing experience, but since GTA has yet to come nextgen Saint's Row & Godfather sit at the top of this bloody heap. At the end of the day, 360 in hand, which would you sooner play? San Andreas had it's day just like every other entry in the series, but it's dated now, graphically & engine-wise(tho SR DID disappoint in it's failure to carry weapon levelling across on anything other than online play).

But yeah, what was it about JC that made it so crap?

its not that it was crap as such.. it was just... nothing new.. it had nothing that made me want to keep playing it after 2-3 hours....

funnily enough, i got bully a few days after just cause and was stuck on playing it for the best part of two weeks...

as for mafia, its a great game, the only kind of one that would come close to gta, but at that, its a completely different game, more intelligent in parts than gta would be, ie the speed limits... i found the story line in mafia a lot more solid than the gta ones (cept maybe san andreas), its just a touch short for my liking, and it doesn't have the absolute fun factor of gta...

another thing that pissed me off about just cause was the fact that the place seemed huge, but awfully linear at the same time...

Why does everyone think it's fair to compare a PS2 and Xbox 360 game in terms of graphics and engine. Yeah the graphics and enginge are better NO SHIT, that's what they're fucking MADE to be. All I'm sayin', wait till GTA 4 comes out to decide who is at the top of the ladder here.

Yep. Exactly the same... I mean, paradropping from the sky was fucking amazing the first 1,000 times. Then I just couldn't be fucked...

Twitchy ... as in, when you press the " jump to car " button, and you're about 100 meters completely horizontal with the car, and you just land directly ontop of it out of nowhere?

Keep dreamin' Don.

So yeah, I was in a rush before so let me elaborate now: The only thing that may've woo'd me on the PS3 is the OS. If it topped XBL then I might've considered it since graphically there's fuck-all comparison to be made. 'Fraid not though. According to the caffiene-pumped, bug-eyed fucking squirrel of a sales clerk at the store, you can actually surf the net with the same lack of limits as the PC, meaning Hondos & porn could be readily available on a console(which sounds more enticing than words can convey). If I had to replace my whole PC with maybe a package unit? I might be moved to get a PS3 instead, depending on the speed & whatnot(since I only use mine for porn, hondos & games), but not as a console.

Hey Baytor!! You see GTA4 anywhere? 'Cause I sure don't!! Meaning right now Saint's Row or Godfather sits at the top of the foodchain. Hell, even Gun's a brilliant entry into this genre. That is all.

Yeah but it's like comparing Super Mario Bros. for the NES to Crash Bandicoot. Yeah it looks and plays better but is it actually better?

I mean Saints Row and Godfather are fun no doubt, as is Gun. But they're short (Gun especially I beat it in half a day) and they have little to no replay value wheras the GTA series has a lot. It isn't all about how big and shiny things are, it's the little things that count too.
