  1. gamespot quotes: Animal Crossing takes the notion of the conventional console role-playing game and tosses it right out the window in favor of some of the most original and addictive gameplay ever. The hours of gaining experience levels, keeping up with convoluted storylines, and engaging in random battles have been replaced with hours of picking fruit, pulling weeds, interacting with the residents of your town, and, most importantly, collecting as much cool stuff for your house as you possibly can. In addition to being completely open-ended, Animal Crossing has an incredible number of activities to keep you occupied, such as fishing, designing your own clothes, and, best of all, gathering up a vast collection of Nintendo Entertainment System games that can be played within the game or uploaded to the Game Boy Advance for an instant retro gaming fix. All these features, however, are just the tip of the iceberg, and the game seems to always have something new in store, whether it's an item you've never seen or just a witty comment from one of your neighbors. The cute, cartoony look of the game may force some of you to jump to conclusions about Animal Crossing, but give it a few hours, and you'll be hooked for sure. What it lacks in good looks it more than makes up for in personality and the nearly infinite amount of time you can spend with the game. While most role-playing games stick to elements that are tried and true, this game goes out of the way to do something different and strikes gold at every opportunity. from Tim: dammit, all i can do is shake a tree and pick up the peaches!~!!! note - animal crossing won best gamecube rpg of the year.
  2. so.... you like max payne don't you? is your trigger finger begging for more? Well here's another third-person shooter for you. Step up to dead to rights - namco's new game that is now out for all next gen consoles. Right after a kick ass, john woo style intro, you are hit with a story of a bad ass cop out to literally blow the brains out of any bad guy. I have never seen a cop like this. Sure, the story is about a cop out for revenge... but this cop?!? he makes robocop seem nice. don't have a gun? run up to an enemy, and you got multiple disarms at your disposal, usually ending up breaking his neck - and like poetry, his weapon falls right into your hands. use your enemies as human shields.... switch weapons at any time... blow the other guys away, and switch again to take out your shield... execution style, point blank in the head. this cop is downright dirty. I have never seen any game as violent... mabye mortal kombat, but with much more style. Of course, you also have a large variety of weapons at your disposal. ok, that's not enough? there is more. since he's a k-9 cop, you have fluffy at your disposal. sic him on an enemy, he goes for the throat and brings you back the guy's gun/shotgun, what have you. good dog! without a weapon, you still have block, kick, punch, throw combos. Did i mention diving, ducking, and first person aiming? Think of syphon filter with 4x the options to kill. finally, you got the slo mo aspect. I haven't gotten this down yet, because of the learning curve on the controller etc... but, you can dive in slo mo, target and take out baddies with style, style, and more style. Jack Slater is one bad-ass cop.
  3. is it worth it to get this game? It's been out for quite awhile, and i've heard a lot of bad things about it. I basically like games that don't get repetative. these combo kick punch button combinations? speaking of mech.... there's the new mechassult game for xbox, which is lookin real nice and getting a LOT of praise. It also runs on xbox live for those of ya who wanna test yer stuff. the xbox live includes an earpiece/mic to let you taunt or communicate with teammates.
  4. of course dubs can be done improperly! flashback... back in the days there were no dvds (gasp!) you had to chose which one you wanted when you went to the video store. There were both versions, and sometimes special widescreen editions on vhs. sometimes it would boggle the mind which one to get and what the difference was. From what i've seen, the dubbing has improved a lot - i figure it's cause it's gained more popularity and more $ flows in anime to hire better voice actors. There was also a gap between subtitled and dubbed versions. Usually dubbs would come out far before their subtitled versions did. Since a majority of anime fans prefered dubbs, that's why. It's obvious it's much much more work to dubb something (getting voice actors, finding what matches the mouths, and editing, blah blah) than to subb it. But it would take forever and cost more, the sub versions. Furthermore, the dub people would put in some really corny jokes in the day... you'd wonder - where they get these people? from a cave?
  5. Don't forget the influences the wacholski brothers had.... kung foo movies, john woo, and frank miller among others. don't forget to pay hommage!
  6. live action is another thing - i prefer seeing subtitles. I like to see the words matching the mouths and sometimes i learn when watching movies. There are so many phrases that i have picked up that way. Imagine that!
  7. nick wa jibun dake shitteru zyoutai ga suki desu. Tokuni ni nihonngo no chishiki wa zibunno naka ni shimatte okitai nodesu the cowboy will know what i'm trying to say, since he knows japanese so well. (i don't think the book is going to help you this time)
  8. MGS 2 definately has to be one of the best. I wish i could check out how substance is. note... However, I think the content of mgs 1 is better. Mabye because there was so much going on and so many new and strange things going on... graphically, mgs2, but the whole thing of mgs 1, even though not a 'cut scene' was awesome. If they remade mgs1 with playstation 2 graphics, it would be ungodly. who could forget the battle with psycho mantis? (i was using a sony tv and the font of hideo was the same that sony uses... I stopped playing cause i thought something was going on with my tv!) ff10 also, from the little i've played, it has beautiful cutscenes. i know i'm forgetting to mention a bunch, but i will get back here when i remember.
  9. As the world turns - of course there are gonna be bad versions of each. of course, there are less bad voice actors on the japanese side of the coin. this one reason why subtitles are better. The other reason why is cause you catch a lot more of the jokes in sub. now that i think about it, you catch all the jokes if you have a japanese friend or significant other! Sometimes when you watch a series, you get used to the voices and you just are so used to em that that is what you would rather stick with. *cough*ranma*cough... however, over time, i have come to appreciate both. anyway, it's good to enjoy. hell, if you love a series enough you WILL watch both. like i'd watch macross plus again in both versions or if a dub version of initial d comes out, i'd watch it. oh yeah; KOS, i enjoyed the first dub version of akira! it was cool to see kaneda sounding like leonardo. Reminds me when the turtles cartoon when i watched it - when it was more serious instead of what it has become.
  10. http://www.realultimatepower.net/ check out the hate mail. yall are gonna get a kick outta this.
  11. haven't voted yet. it's a tough poll. however, i don't know why thelma & luise is up there. don't think it was that big of a part. 7 years in tibet, legends of the fall, and a river runs through it i haven't seen, but i haven't heard anything amazing about them (i bet these haven't gotten any votes). i saw 12 monkeys and it really boggles the mind how he can do that eye thing. its almost scary, he can move one eye to make it look at his nose and the other one is staring at you! fight club is great, but not "the greatest movie of all time" by far. interview with the vampire was quite interesting, but queen of the dammed terrible. so it's between meet joe black, 12monkeys, seven, interview with the vampire, and fight club... tough choice. too bad ocean's eleven has more of an ensamble cast - the movie is great! why no snatch?! he's a pretty big role there.
  12. look at the avatar - guess which one? resovior dogs here. should get a poll up for harvey keitel. great job... i guess i like seeing stars with guns. been awhile since i saw fargo. have yet to see the big lebowski. i also like the opening of desperado. too cool!
  13. really short notice here.... it's out in theaters now, one in sunset and one in miami beach.
  14. but hey, it's looking good! i don't know much about comics... nor this one. all i know is it says 608 and dec 2002 on it. jim lee on the cover. nice art, seems like a touch up in the way cool direction. way cool.
  15. wow... if that's what it turns out to be, it's gonna be really sad. Think about it. What it says is - digital boobies of laura croft and dead or alive beach volleyball are what drive gamers today. i don't see it. How can you drool over this? i could name a few people who drool over anime characters. NOT REAL, people. i'd much rather drool over a pinup of carmen electra or aria giovanni.
  16. good point sango, i almost forgot about those... those stupid oavs that are flops of the olden days. the ones that you would find on the shelf that were never rented at your video store. just totally missing any intellect, plot, or art. outlanders - something something teacher - tekken - twin doll - 8man after - lillycat - a-ko... these were not japan's better years...
  17. aack... the movie can be watched anytime, but it is good to have seen the series. I quote chichan after i got her started... (note: she went through gundam wing series 49 episodes in three days) (after watching 5 hours straight) "i found it. i'm gonna watch a kenshin tommorow." "kenshin is good boyfriend. he is strong, he cook, and do laundry." what have i done?
  18. oh yeah, crossdressing is perfect for anime. it's not like you can predict it's gonna be a guy/girl. you watch a movie nowadays, it's like - what the hell is that? you know right off the bat.
  19. how did xxx get into the anime section?!? anyway, favs (in no particular order): macross plus, robotech (macross saga), fushigi yuugi, kenshin, ranma (season 1-2 - haven't seen more,) akira, gto, initial d, and laputa (just saw it, better than monoke wow!) negs: sailor moon and other cutesy anime that has no point... however, i respect pokemon for being the originator of taking america by storm with little pokemon (note: i don't watch pokemon). digiman can shin-e for all i care. hentai - majority of it is non watchable. jmt, i got 3 kings i hope to god you got brother.....
  20. you only live twice (no more neverending story.... it only goes so far!!!)
  21. well, the animation is simple and cutesy, so the jokes aren't that vulgar. overall, it's hard to find this one.
  22. hmm... i think i got the short end of the stick. i got an overseas version and it was subbed only. the picture was great, but the subs were terrible. i guess it's the luck of the draw. it has spike on the front with his ship in the background.... avoid this version! it has 3 discs too.
