Reverend Jax
As far as flavor with the burgers at least, I think Boca > Morningstar Agreed. I'm glad Costco carries the vegan Boca Burgers. California burgers (by Gardenburger) are really good too, thought they are not so much trying to taste like a hamburger, but rather their own thing. I just bought some Soy-rizo from Trader Joe's...it's really good although it might not look too appetizing when you take it out of the casing, lol...Ben loves the stuff. What brand is that? Is it Trader Joe's brand? I like Trader Joe's, wish they had them down here. I only get a chance to eat stuff from there when I visit my mom. Aartemys
Yes, its Trader Joe's brand -- I've seen another type in the grocery store but I don't recall the brand and I'm not sure if its vegan or not. I will check when I go back to the co-op in town -- that's where they sell most of the vegan stuff around here. The closest Trader Joe's is about a 45 minute drive from me, but I hear they are going to open a Fresh Market about a 1/2 hour away!
sinestetici
Ha - that's super cool. I made a soyrizo tofu scramble the other night while some friends and I got drunk. I barely got any :( I love how friends expect me to make vegan food now, and they all want to try it because they know it's going to be pretty gosh darn tasty. Lipala
The soyrizo scramble sounds good. I usually just do tofu and peppers and onions and maybe some potato. I'll have to try that.
Reverend Jax
I usually put chopped celery and tomato in my tofu scramble, as well the peppers and onions you mentioned. Never done one with potatoes, but I don't know why I never thought to. I also use a splash of soy sauce, turmeric and nutritional yeast. And sometimes some Follow Your Heart brand Vegan Cheese (same company that makes Veganaise). I've never done one with a plant-based meat product like a soy chorizo or something by gardein. the division of joy
Vegan curries are ftw. Sweet potato = <
Aartemys
You know, I had a sweet potato taco the other day and it didn't do anything for me...
Lipala
I'm not a fan of sweet potato used the way it frequently is. I like it in casseroles and baked and sometimes as fries but not as part of a "combination" food like tacos (combination meaning foods that are essentially a mixture of basic ingredients with little actual cooking of the completed dish, most of tex-mex ends up in this category)
Aartemys
Yeah, the combination wasn't what it was cut out to be...the flavors didn't meld in my opinion
the division of joy
I find sweet potato works really well in a mildly spicy curry. Couple it with some cauliflower and lentils and you've a delicious delicious meal.
Thelogan
I'm a fan of baked sweet potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes and sweet potato fries. I am not, however, a fan of that marshmallow "candied yam" shit that southern grandmothers like to make for thanksgiving.
the division of joy
Sweet potato mash is actual sex in a bowl. Not tried or really wanted to try the candied variety.
Reverend Jax
Sweet Potato tater tots are also delicious. Ditto on not caring for marshmallows on them (regardless of the egg in it, I wouldn't want vegan marshmallow either). Thelogan
It's god-awful shit. A terrible combination that was clearly originally created as an attempt to troll the holiday, but someone forgot to tell the punchline. I mean, I eat it anyway, but I don't have a soul. Sweet Potato tater tots are also delicious. THIS IS A THING?!? I know what I'm doing tomorrow.
the division of joy
What is a tater tot?
Reverend Jax
Bite-sized fried potato food stuff. A staple of school cafeterias. As in "Fuck yes, they have tater tots today!" Edited April 19, 2012 by Reverend Jax
Thelogan
Sort of like little bite-sized hash browns. Do you know what a hash brown is? Edited April 19, 2012 by Thelogan Jax is quick on the draw and we got the same image in our google searches...
the division of joy
Aye, hash browns are pretty delicious. Must try making sweet potato versions.
Reverend Jax
THIS IS A THING?!? I know what I'm doing tomorrow. Check your local grocer's frozen section right were the regular tots are. The groceries I go to her each have two brands of sweet potato tots. Might be worth getting frozen ones to try first before making them from scratch (if that was your intention). Lipala
Also, if you're super lazy, the Sonic Drive-In fast food chain has recently started carrying sweet potato tots but I never trust the oil at a fast food place.
amynicole
So lipala, I discovered a bakery in ft worth that has some vegan options and they are really good and I thought of you. It's called stir crazy and they are in the fairmont neighborhood by the hospital district. They had a booth at open streets this weekend, so we tried them and also this salsa (I don't remember who makes it) that is sold sometimes at spiral diner, and it was really good, too. Aartemys
Aarty - there are soooooo many things you can do with the vegan veggie patties too. Have you tried using those tempah maple strips yet? If you fry them, they end up tasting like bacon (except better because there isn't any grease), throw them on top of the vegan patties, and voila - bacon burgers. I always eat mine with hummus and spinach and jals. Sin, I just had a serving of those tempeh maple strips...yuck. Well, yuck in the way that I feel with over cooked bacon...tastes like maple bacon but the texture was that of a rice or potato patty. I guess you wouldn't notice the difference in a burger, right? They were OK...I don't think I will go out of my way to have more, though...
amynicole
The grease and fat is what makes bacon so awesome.
Thelogan
FINALLY! Mark Nuckols is the founder and CEO of Hufu, LLC, and his company has but one goal: To serve man (or some reasonable, soy-based facsimile thereof). Hufu is tofu, but textured and flavored into a pseudo-meat billed as “The Healthy Human Flesh Alternative.” They say it tastes like people. I don't have to tell you people the headaches I have to go through to get a decent cut of human flesh. Especially in this country. The stock is generally...undesirable. Reverend Jax
Hufu is like a ten year old story.
