I realize now I gave you a huge handicap, this game would have to be truly terrible for me to win. I shoulda talked you into Sonic and Knuckles (Sans Sonic 3 plug-in) rather than 3D Blast. Still, I remain steadfast in my assertions.

it's gonna be better than blast...better than S&K though? i dunno, i remember loving that game.

1st stage (we've seen before) looks very old-school sonic to me, makes me happy. i hear some of the later ones are more broken, here's to finding out soon?

What else is $15 on XBLA for you guys? Between MS' skewed international exchange rate and points conversion I'm not sure what math I should be doing here. Even AU$15(which at a guess would be about 1600 points= something like the Sam & Max episodic content) seems pretty steep for a sonic game...

i think 1600 points = $20, which i only spent on Sam & Max...kinda weird cause that's the price it goes for on sale on Steam, never got that.

1200 i think should be $15, which i paid for Braid & ,Monkey Island?, and few i didn't: Castle Crashers, Shadow Complex, Limbo, MvC2, new Castlevania?, Portal?, latest Tomb Raider, bish says Lumines at launch. i used to wait on sales, if you're not gold you're immune to them though, pity.

Yeah, well I just bought a year of live for $38 which is a steal by AU standards, and so 1200 makes sense for something like this, which I'd probably drop. I still really wanna play Sam & Max but am forcing myself to finish Monkey Island first, I guess to make sure Point & click isn't complete shit on XBLA beforehand.

(dont get me wrong, wish theyd've nailed down the physics, but im liking what im seeing. im hoping i can hold out for a sale.

also: i did not forget our wager, baytors - finally grabbed this one for $5 on holiday sale, should get to it soon - if the demo's to be believed, levels should be well structured but the physics are...questionable.

 

Ep 2 up there is supposed to have a complete physics overhaul, which given how good Generations was, could make it what more people wanted from Ep 1.

 

Incidentally, Sonic Colors (the one Mal posted) turned out fantastic, from the hour or so i spent with it.

sonic generations was friken epic. i loved the nostalgia remix it had goin the entire time. sonic 4 however had me dying for something better..........

 

but seriously... if i can get an HD remake of sonic 3 & knuckles that would be game of the year. (unless batman arkham planet or sum shit came out lol).

...okay, so i can finally come back to this, having put a few hours in yesterday.

 

what's upsetting here is that there's a decent sonic game within, but a few elements are not letting me get at it very often.

 

-for early levels (and some later ones), it's definitely more the art style that's off-putting than level design: Splash Hill especially works because there's multiple ways to finish a level.

Even the homing attack isn't all that troubling (i was okay with what i played of the Sonic Rush games, i think they had it?), it's the game's occasional reliance on them - there's too many sections of daisy-chaining enemies to use it on & cross a chasm, at one point midway through I'm kind've stuck because i homing attack 3 enemies in a row, land on a geyser between them, and then there's 3 more but since my feet didn't technically touch the ground I guess I can't use it again here? I really wish there was another option to complete this level; areas like this (and the boulder-ride one in the ruins) feel more gimmicky then they should.

-related: I see what they were going for following 3 here, but splash hill, casino night etc zones - it's cool they added stuff, but i feel after years of bad sonic games, Team Sonic seems too afraid to walk away from these nostalgia levels, and that's a shame - Colors was all new, and was great. I really hope Generations was the send-off here, and ep 2 is all new stuff.

 

-the physics are at least 80-90% of the problem, though. Aside from the prior mentioned honing troubles, momentum is indeed wonky - curling up into a ball while rolling dowhill or going through loops will, at intervals, slow you down or stop you for no apparent reason.

The devs seem to know this, and ofter litter/try to hide springs and turbine speed boosts to keep you moving so you don't, but it's still obviously there, and if you fall off in any of these sort've scripted areas, you'll know for sure. The game does try to reward exploration, but these areas work against that.

 

-worse yet - and this might just be me? - there's times when the hit detection seems less than perfect. i too thought this qualms might be overblown, but really, physics to a platformer are like...well, imagine an RPG that's bad at math.

 

a couple patches could probably turn this game around, but at this point, i imagine they're knee deep in episode 2, and after the momentum from Generations (thankfully proving they understand where they went wrong with said physics) im not holding my breath. for $5, im glad i gave it a go, no idea if I'll finish it though - especially now that CD came out, and looks great.

 

TL; DR - i won my bet with Baytor (it's still > 3D Blast, heh) but it's kind've a moot point since we somehow lost control of our member titles anyway.

it really didin't, but i like to think we got Generations out of that wake-up call.

 

i honestly never played 3D blast in the day, just in passing on one of the many collection discs - i guess if i went in knowing it'd be isometric, it wouldn'tve been so weird? i just couldn't keep with it for more than a few levels.

 

also, you still undervalue vanilla S&K, sir.

I finished ep 1 of Sonic 4 and I hated every moment of it.

 

- levels where dull

- bosses where also dull

- the special stages where very annoying

- AND THE MOTHERFUCKING PHYSICS

 

I did enjoy the boss rush final stage and the Egg Robo was pretty challenging.

BUT THEY DID THAT IN SONIC ADVANCE 1....

 

So lets hope ep 2 fixes some things

 

Also Sonic CD HD remake is good. Apperently you can unlock tails when you finish the main game.
