Wonder Woman 2.0

by Mike Krumboltz

Attention all obsessive comic fans! Set your mood dials to "outraged." Wonder Woman, one of the most popular superheroes of all time, is getting a new look.

Even casual fans of the Amazon Princess can spot her famous threads a mile away. Blue shorts with white stars, a bold bustier, and bright red boots that make Superman's look downright tasteful. All that's about to change, though. Starting with this month's comic, Wonder Woman starts wearing pants.

You can almost hear the fanboys screaming. But, according to a popular blog from CNN, there is a reason for the switch. Writer J. Michael Straczynski, who is taking over writing the comic, commented on a DC Comics blog post, "I wanted to toughen her up, and give her a modern sensibility." She's been saving the world for 69 years. If you ask us, it's only fair that she finally treat herself to some new threads.

So, what are the specifics? The biggest news is that she'll lose the hot pants, and wear tight blue pants instead. The famous bracelets are still around, but, according to Straczynski, they'll be more colorful, "with a script W on each of them that form WW when she holds them side by side…and if you get hit by one of them, it leaves a W mark." As Straczynski puts it, "this is a Wonder Woman who signs her work."

But it's not just Wonder Woman's appearance that's been changed. Her back story is different, too. The New York Times explains: "In the reimagining of her story, Wonder Woman, instead of growing up on Paradise Island with her mother, Queen Hippolyta, and her Amazon sisters, is smuggled out as a baby when unknown forces destroy her home and slaughter its inhabitants." Clearly, this is a darker version for a more dangerous world.

Not surprisingly, the news of Wonder Woman's new look and history inspired huge searches on Yahoo!. Lookups for "wonder woman changes," "new wonder woman," and "wonder woman outfit" all roared to life. Others wanted to know more about Wonder Woman's alter ego. (FYI, she goes by the name Diana Price when she's not kicking criminal butt.) And lest you think her classic look will simply fade away, consider this: Searches on "sexy wonder woman outfit" have already started their ascent in preparation for Halloween.

Okay, while I support DC's move to desexualize all their female superheroes, why is Diana now dressed like she's in her workout clothes. Darwin Cooke gave a perfectly reasonable version of her outfit where she looked like an Amazon and not like a pornstar, here she just looks like Kathy if she were a superhero.

I don't support the move, they should do the opposite. :???:

But yeah, it's too different. Black pants? Blech...

Why was Wonder Woman all patriotic with her costume in the first place? Isn't she a citizen on Guam or wherever the hell "paradise island" is?

If memory serves, they pretty much did this exact same thing 40 years ago. They changed her costume to some feminist friendly white jumpsuit, got rid of her powers and supporting cast. It didn't last. Everyone bitched and it was back to hot-pants business as usual by the early 70's. I can't find a pic online, but I know it existed.

I couldn't care less about Wonder Woman, but that new costume is awful. Baytor nailed it, she looks like she's about to pull her hair above the temples and yell "chocolate ACK!" or something similarly unfunny. I'm sure this move has something to do with movies...

This isn't the 90's and Wonder Woman shouldn't look like Superboy.

Red white and blue was, according to the comics, the traditional ceremonial garb of Amazons when they did the ritual of origin bullshit. In other words: Just cause.

However, Darwyn Cooke did a wonderful design for Justic League: New Frontier where the hot pants became a plated skirt, the corset became a breast plate, and the hooker boots became sandles and armored shin uards and the red and blue were muted. In otherr words he dressed her like a gladiator, it's always been my favorte version of the costume. After seeing Scraczynski's Thor now look like a Norseman and not like a cross between a bodybuilder and an 80s Hair Metal lead singer I really expected more out of him. Boo Straczynki, you are still the man who made Spider-Man an avatar of the Spider God and created Gwen Stacey and Norman Osbourne's mutant spawn.

this.

workout clothes look 10x better than pornstar bullshit; i hated ultimate x-men when the dudes came ready for battle in black leather/kevlar and the girls in bikinis. WW's a warrior, not an underwear model.

post up Cooke's outfit you're referencing, too.

FDB's a big fan of Wonder Woman, too, isn't she? What does she think of this?

Heh, don't ask. ^_^

This is all from Justice League New Frontier, he's drawn pictures of her in the classic outfit as well where her hot pants were not a thong and the corset was still a breastplate, but this is my favorite version. (Not that this version also stood about a foot taller than Superman)

i like the outfit. I hate the bikini look female superheros (and villians) are given. It just isn't practical to go kicking ass when you wear something that has a high chance of flashing your vagina. Maybe that's how she wins tho ^_^ . That being said the jacket is stupid. it reminds of something you'd see Dazzler wearing. they could have added the blue in a more creative way.

Baytor- that's the best look, but it also remind me of Xena warrior princess, or something you'd wear during a tennis match.

Baytor, something like this?

I'd say that's an awesome look, best look she could get. Really brings out the Greek Goddess.

Far better than the Superboy-ish look, then again, most anything is.

Well of course it looks like Xena, they're both figures based on Greek mythology.

What I like about the gladiator look is that:

A) It sticks to the original but changes enough to make it look less ridiculous

B) It's practical, as gladiators wore that kind of outfit because it allowed mobility whilst also guarding most of the vitals

C) It's not spandex

D) It's accurate to the character's background

E) It just looks kinda badass. You can't see it in the pictures but the crown has little wings like Captain America's mask.

Yes, except the skirt should be made of knee-length metal plates like soldiers wore.

I actually like the new suit, It's much more functional. I think the Jim Lee's designed suit is a reflection of real-world aspect happening in comic art today. From Nolan's actual technology "Dark Knight" costume, to the the rendering of wrinkles and textures onto photo-realistic digital drawings in most of today's comics. The metal bustier and hot pants were dated. I agree the original always will be the iconic Wonder Woman. But, the fact that most fan-boy illustrations of Wonder Woman were first of a nude pin-up model, shows the impracticality of it.

For years I wondered when Wonder Woman ,who is considered to be part of the DC Comics trinity with Batman and Superman, never given a seriously storyline like Batman's HUSH or Superman's "RED SON". The answer might be that the character like her costume, was stuck in the past. Her new suit will bring better and more mature storylines. I am not sure why Stracynski re-did the origin, Although it could be interesting to watch Diana eventually rediscover her origin.

This new suit, because it is so functional, might open the door to the Wonder Woman movie that has been stuck in development hell for years. A young actress might now be more willing to play the role since the suit is less skimpy and more serious.

Now, I will not hear another person say, How could she fight in the bustier and shorts without her junk falling out!

Did you honestly compare that mess to Christopher Nolan's Batman costume? That costume will translate worse to film than the pin-up or the pornstar costume. The gladiator costume is the only one that will ever translate to real life without looking fucking ridiculous. It looks like Wonder Woman is going to the gym. The reason Wonder Woman's never had a great solo story is that not a lot of good writers ever get put on her book (it's not uncommon, how many great She Hulk stories have you ever read?) and also with writers' weird fixation with making her into a cross between Thundra and the woman from the beginning of The Boondock Saints. I like Straczynski, but between the 1990s style costume and changing her story so she's basically Greek Superman-With-Tits just doesn't bode well with me.
