don't forget that the red skull was the secretary of defense for awhile

wait, when was this? also, good point on Captain America becoming Nomad, too.

The Red Skull is back and apparently he’s a Republican – now that’s a villain! Posing as Secretary of Defense Dean Rusk the Skull has secretly employed A.I.M soldiers to unleash a lethal flesh-eating, biological weapon across the Midwest. The Avengers, unaware of the Skull’s deception, desperately seek a cure for the fast-moving biohazard. Meanwhile the Skull has been picking off Avengers one at a time plus he’s positioning evidence to cast blame on Black Panther for the supposed terrorist attack with the hopes of starting a broader conflict.

and wtf is up with Spidey's new suit?

Tony Stark gave it to him. It ties in with Civil War. You need to read ASM to get what going on.

And who the fuck was in the DD costume...I thought everyone already knew but me...

Nobody knows who's in the costume.

Newtype: when was that though, what run?

arch - that's the thing; someone's running around in DD's costume over in his book, trying to do some of his work (and potentially plant doubt that matt's DD when everyone does know he's locked up).

I thought that scene was weird too cause you figure everyone in that room must know its not Matt, i figure theyre assuming its whoever is posing as him in hell's kitchen, but that thing he does with the coin is, to me, alarming....

but yeah, the mystery's part of the background story, i figure.

Avengers # 65-#70

4184_11105_1.jpg

Writer: Geoff Johns

Penciller: Olivier Coipel

Inker: Andy Lanning

"Red Zone Part One: Panic Attack"

A mysterious red cloud sweeps through South Dakota killing people in a plague-like fashion. The Avengers step in but are confronted by the US military. Ignoring the US military's warnings, the Avengers don protective suits and enter the red cloud in search of its source.

"Red Zone Part Two: Infections"

Iron Man and Black Panther's effort to neutralize the cloud at a government research facility is roadblocked as the US Secretary of Defense escorts them out as they no longer sponsored by the United States. Meanwhile, the rest of the team pushes deeper into the deadly red cloud at the base of Mount Rushmore. They uncover a secret lab and learn that the deadly cloud seems to have been made by a US bio-weapons lab.

"Red Zone Part Three: Unclassified"

As the deadly red zone continues to expand, the Avengers move deeper into the US bio-weapons lab and learn more about its origins. They then have a run-in with some A.I.M. soldiers and their fight leaves the She-Hulk's suit damaged. Jack of Hearts tries to get her to the surface, but she changes back to her Jennifer Walters human form which apparently is ravaged by the virus. Meanwhile, back at Stark Technologies, Stark and Black Panther try to work together to find a cure, but are attacked and captured by the US army.

"Red Zone Part Four: The Great Escape"

The Red Zone continues to grow at an exponential rate. The Avengers discover that this secret chemical base was under the direct supervision of the US Secretary of Defense, Dell Rusk. Jennifer Walters transforms back into the She-Hulk, but she's gone totally savage and smashes around the Avengers. Falcon meets up with Gyrich to discuss their spying on Rusk and learn that he is in fact the Red Skull.

"Red Zone Part Five"

Warbird returns to the Red Zone and helps her teammates regroup. The Red Skull beats up on Gyrich and gloats over him. Captain America finally confronts the Red Skull. The Red Skull catches Cap off guard and captures him in a chamber and exposes him to the virus. The Red Skull then brags about how he'll ensure that Wakanda is blamed for the Red Zone.

"Red Zone: Part Six"

The Scarlet Witch unleashes the full power of her chaos magic in a desperate attempt to contain the Red Zone. Iron Man and the Black Panther confront the Red Skull. The Red Skull disables Iron Man's armor and then takes on the Black Panther in hand-to-hand combat. With a bit of help from the Falcon, the Black Panther takes down the Red Skull hard. Together Stark Enterprises and the government of Wakanda are able to neutralize the Red Zone. Stark and T'Challa sign a new scientific sharing agreement. Cap has a nice chat with the president about bio-weapons labs in the United States.

While Spider-Man makes good points, I can't disagree with this agenda. I think what pushed Cap over wasn't so much the Initiative, but making a task force to take the people who don't sign on down. That's pitting friend against friend, and Cap wasn't about to hunt down, say, Peter just to sate S.H.I.E.L.D's latest ego-trip.

I think we're all in agreeance there. Cap didn't quite take the ball until Hill sprang that little nugget on him. You people don't seem to realise how much it tears me up to go against my deadset Marvel favorite here!

And for the record, Geoff Johns is the man over in DC no doubt, but his Avengers wqork sucked shit. Christ it sucked.

That may be part of it. Lets not forget Wolvie and Cap are soldiers. They know what registration can do. They seen first hand the horror that can befall a person in a concentration camp. All you have to do is read X-men Days of Future Past to see what can happen at one point when things will/can get out of hand.

But on the opposite end of the spectrum look to books like Kingdom Come & Age of Apocalypse to see what happens when metas & muties run unfettered.

Youre stiill losin me a wee bit on the exlusive schedule bit tho, Skeet - if all his baddies knew where to find his family, hows Parker safer now, hows that threat neutralized? Again, Secret War showed a union between higher-up and even low level thugs, with corruption on every level its hard to imagine feeling safe with a gaurd or two around your family...Pete's a guy who's already lost one girlfreind before (possibly a child, if you follow that loose plot thread from years back) and House of M realy reminded him how much more he can lose...Stark is right, Peter's central cause with Matt already too far gone, no one stands to get as fucked by this as he does, i think.

Again, I apologise for not being more up to date, but I'm yet to read the Murdoch Papaers or any more of Bru's DD. I know Matt's behind bars & there's a fake hornhead around, but that's the extent of it. In regards to Pete though, it comes down to this little nugget from the arse-end of Loeb & Lee's Hush arc: "A riddle that everyone knows the answer to is 'worthless'."

Yea, I read it all...I'd like to catch House of M to see what happened to the Mutants....and wtf is up with Spidey's new suit?

There's a Wikipedia link either here or in the ASM thread. Don't even bother with any recent Spidey stuff. It looks pretty shite.

Skeet - the riddle answer only works if youre the riddler, if youre Carange and youd like to ear-fuck MJ with your symbiote dick, im thinkin a home address is helpful.

But on the opposite end of the spectrum look to books like Kingdom Come & Age of Apocalypse to see what happens when metas & muties run unfettered.

its a good point, but cmon, that's a pretty black & whtie answer...Kingdom Come is a good analogy though. prolbem is, the other end of the specturm from DC analogies is DKR where Supes is the gov'ts bitch and Bats is running around, hunted by the cops, while tryin to do the right thing.

Don't even bother with any recent Spidey stuff. It looks pretty shite.

This was true up till the last 3 isseus (right after "The Other") with "Mr Stark goes to Washington", its the only time you get to see Stark arguing anti-registration and he makes some great points. Its not essential necessarily, but sets up he & Parker's relationship here, much less how far Tony's willing to go before the ball even drops. I hope those issues are with Illuminati in a Civil War trade down the road.
