The NZA Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Parkour Parkour (IPA: [paʁ.'kuʁ], often abbreviated PK) is a physical discipline of French origin in which the participant — called a traceur (/tʁa.'sœʁ/) — attempts to pass obstacles in the fastest and most direct manner possible, using skills such as jumping, vaulting and climbing, or the more specific parkour moves. The obstacles can be anything in the environment, so parkour is often practiced in urban areas because of many suitable public structures, such as buildings, rails, and walls. So, Sen posted this over in blargh, and man was that cool! I learend about this from an issue of Warren Ellis' Global Frequency, i think it was termed something else, but the idea/sport was to basically treat the city as your playground: runners (apparnetly very limber, fearless, and having ankles of steel) would run full speed, vaulting over fences, running up walls (a la Jackie Chan), basically moving full speed across roofs/platforms/ladders etc, whatever the city provided, despite the immeinent thread of broken bones/death. The above video's a great example; tons of jacknifes, and my favorite part was the guy running from the dog...anyway, its really cool to see, its like superheroics in action. id be interested if anyone did this kinda thing around here, cause it looks awesome and fun despite the injuries. the division of joy Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 ive been waiting for a thread about this actually... i and a friend are actually training to do some of this stuff, while i can't scale buildings yet, im coming along nicely... it is a great way of crippling yourself in the future, what with the intense punishment to the ankles... Quote
soldier of fortune Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 there is a great scene with this in Luc Besson's District 13... Looks insane... Thought you'd glass ankles!? Quote
LightningOBO Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 This is so TIGHT! damn...i would love to try this but i would have to get over my fear of heights! LOL Quote
the division of joy Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 generally when you get going, the adrenaline kinda stops you thinking about it Quote
soldier of fortune Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 So ross, where do you practice this, i'd like to come and watch u and your glass ankles? Quote
the division of joy Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 about once every week out at ucd.... im not doing anything huge at yet, mostly because i want to get good at it... otherwise i probably would die... and yes, injure my ankles in the process of death Quote
LightningOBO Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 it just looks so amazing..its almost like Gymnastics/breakdancing/Capoeira...i need to shape up. I seriously would love to try this! Quote
soldier of fortune Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 I'd say post photographic evidence, but you lost your camera didn't you! I wouldn't recommend doing this in the winter! Quote
the division of joy Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 not exactly lost, im just not getting into the story... but eh, ive had some harsh experiences, going over a fence, i caught my leg on a spike and near impaled myself when i slipped a little... but i was back out a week later doing the same... and this weather... so long as theres no ice, its alright Quote
soldier of fortune Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 Wet & Ice, would be equally bad in my opinion... Remember when i was younger we'd go on egging runs in the old 'hood and wet walls and fences proved to be the down fall of one of the lads, slipped off the wet wall and fractured his elbow... ouch! Seriously though checkout that scene in district 13! Quote
LightningOBO Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 i was so intrigued i called my cousins in Spain and asked about it...and yeah, funny how i just found out the my cousin is really good at it, but my aunt says that this is a "thief's sport" so obviously it seems that there are mixed feelings about this sport! I just wanted to say that I stumbled upon Parkour. And that was a great video, i had to share it! but yeah! I didn't know it was THAT popular... talk about hte new kind of extreme sports! Quote
The NZA Posted November 14, 2006 Author Posted November 14, 2006 DoJ, you seroius? that's pretty cool. what kind of training are you doing? id be really down for this here in miami, but for now its being added to a list of things to look into next spring or so. Quote
Jont Posted November 14, 2006 Posted November 14, 2006 ive been waiting for a thread about this actually... i and a friend are actually training to do some of this stuff, while i can't scale buildings yet, im coming along nicely... it is a great way of crippling yourself in the future, what with the intense punishment to the ankles... I have a version of Parkour that I practice, it involves smaller heights and more alcohol, but it does involve jumping over steps, curbs and bollards while listening to French hip hop in your head. Quote
The NZA Posted December 9, 2006 Author Posted December 9, 2006 Heh. DoJ, hows it coming with this? Most people here dont seem to know what it is, so i havent had much luck finding if there's anyone/anyplace here good for it, sadly. Junker knew about it though. If you got links, id be interested in the training & such....was just hopping fences this morning and im not as quick as i was about it. I gotta know how these guys do shit without breaking their ankles, half ot it looks like absorbing/distributing the shcok by rolling. Quote
the division of joy Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 well i haven't been able to do it that much recently, given the bad weather and the fact that everything is mad slippy, but i still do some basics like jumping bins etc.. as for absorbing the shock of a high fall, its all in how you land... you land on the tips of your toes for the shortest of times, then forward roll so you're dispersing the force of the fall.. its daunting as fuck at the start, but after a while it become second nature really Quote
crimsonfire Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 (edited) Parkour looks badass. Id love to try it but i wouldnt know where to start. Im gonna look for a beginners website or somethin. Heres a video i found of a few guys doin it around London city. Some of this shit is just amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUksaD-JJgI EDIT: SoF, I take it this was the clip you were talkin bout: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAD8xffSBT0 That movie looks kick ass if that clip is anything to go by. Edited March 13, 2007 by crimsonfire Quote
soldier of fortune Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Surely you could do it with DoJ Yeah thats the clip i was talking about, i didn't actually see the whole film, but that whole opening sequence was amazing! Quote
Ganny McVagflaps Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 I can parkour from Bray motherfucking Main street to the 184 out to Greystones then off to Delgany to pick 'shrooms (I'll take 827 of them...mmmm cow shitty) then parkour my ass out to Johnny Foxes for pints galore. Believe it. Quote
alive she cried Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 "Never let a DOJ dig go" That must be your mantra at this stage Quote
Jables Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 That's everyone's mantra, all day every day. If 2Track takes MVP though, he's gotta share that award with Doj. Boy was his fucking muse. Quote
Jont Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 I think you're all being hard on DoJ, he is many things, but he is not intentionally deceitful, if you look at the thread subtitle, it mentions playgrounds, that is clearly where the confusion arrised. Quote
Ganny McVagflaps Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 Fuck you ASC. That shit was all sortsa true. When it comes to DoJ nict-pickery generally when you get going, the adrenaline kinda stops you thinking about it. 1 Quote
