Defining song

Sure, its a wanky dumb question, but if there had to be one song you'd say was yours - be it for personal definition or simply just your favorite goddamn song of all time - what would it be?

There's quite a few that get me goin, from Classic Rock on up to contemporary shit, but if it had to be one, id go with

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird.

How bout the rest of ya?

"good for you," off third eye blind's debut album.  i don't know the band's definition for it, but to me it's about the confusion and conflict of wanting all these things, and wondering if it's right.

"hey-will you stay awhile?  my smile will not mislead you... cause i've been alone, my faith turned to stone, still there's something in you that i believe in"

I guess I don't have a single defining song.  But some there are some songs that really move me.

But as of now...my life feels more like this one song more than anything.  The Calling - "Wherever You Will Go"  Now only if it really made a difference...on a certain someone.   ???

This is my favorite verse:

I know now, just quite how

My life and love might still go on

In your heart and your mind

I'll stay with you for all of time

Call me the hopeless romantic...

I would have to say " Galapagos" from Smashing Pumpkins. (Atleast for right now). It reminds me of the past and how I need to move on with my life. Everytime I hear this song, I think of all the people I loved, the one's that back stabbed me, and the one's that have sticked with me through thick and thin. I guess it's always been an encouraging song! :D

:D

"  Too laate to turn back now, I'm running out of sound

And I am changing, changing

And ifwe died right now, this fool you lov somehow

is here with you"

" I won'tdeny the pain,

I won't deny the change

and shoud I fall from grace here with you

would you leave me too?" :D

Jumper by third eye blind.

I hated it at first. Every time I heard it, I felt like it was accusing me.

"I wish you would step out from that ledge, my friend; cut ties with all the lies that you've been living in..."

Haven't had a chance to post on this one yet.  If I had to pick a song right now I'd say "Lateralus" by Tool, a band that never ceases to amaze me, though Galapagos was a damned fine pick if I say so myself.  Lateralus is basically about the connection between the body and the mind, which is what most of the album is about, and this particular song is more about not over analyzing and brooding over things... "going with the flow" so to speak.  In a sense it's also about listening to music like Tools, you don't have to interpret every word and put each note under a microscope to enjoy it, same goes for life and most art I'd say.  Of course, if I was really paying attention, I'd realize that it does me no good writing a goddamned big paragraph trying to interpret a song that begs not to be interpreted, so here are some lyrics....

"I embrace my desire to

feel the rhythm, to feel connected

enough to step aside and weep like a widow

to feel inspired, to fathom the power,

to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain,

to swing on the spiral

of our divinity and still be a human.

With my feet upon the ground I lose myself

between the sounds and open wide to suck it in,

I feel it move across my skin.

I'm reaching up and reaching out,

I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me.

And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.

We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.

Spiral out. Keep going, going..."

i agree with you junker, alita that was a very good choice, i love that song..

i love mellon collie and the infinite sadness, but personally there will always be a special place in my heart, and i'll always love the album "siamese dream" best.

and who do you think was the better bass player?

d'arcy or arf de meur? i liked d'arcy better, even tho i dug arf in hole..

hey.. which song reminds you of a bad breakup?

mine is Veruca Salt's "breakup song" (adequately named)

"i crawl out of sight for you, dear, i melt with the light, i dissapear, i won't have more fun with you, never get drunk with you, i'll let you go for good.  i pull it apart for you, dear, i wait for my heart to shift, gear, i'll never sleep late with you, never get baked with you, i'll let you down for good....i'll never go back to you, never shoot smack with you, i'll let you go for good"

and CAKE's "haze of love"

"it's 3 in the morning or maybe it's 4, i'm thinking of you, wondering what i should do but i'm finally cutting through this haze.. it's 4 in the morning or maybe it's 5, i think i'm alive and i think i'll survive i'm finally cutting through this haaaze of love, haze of love, for days and days and days i'm your haze of love. yah you, don't love me like i love you.  although you pretend i can see this will end, i'm finally cutting through this haze of love"

and what are songs that were "our song" you know that you and your bf, gf or whatever had together?

my 2 favorite ones were

Donnas, Keep on Loving you

"you should have seen by the look in my eyes baby, there was something missing, you should have known by the tone in my voice, baby, but you didn't listen.  you play dead, but you never bled, instead you lay strewn in the grass all caught up in kisses.  and tho i know all about those girls, still i don't remember. cause it was us baby way before them, and we're still together.  and i meant, every word i said when i said that i love you i meant that i'd love you forever and i'm gonna  keep on loving you, cause it's the only thing i wanna do, i don't want to sleep, i just wanna keep on loving you"

and of course led zeppelin

"if the sun refused to shine i would still be loving you, when the mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me"

Heh, don't get me started on how cool the Pumpkins were...  I can't really decide between Siamese dream and Mellon Collie, if I had to pick I'd say mellon collie because of sheer quanity of songs   ???   And as for D'arcy and arf de meur, I think arf de meur is a better bassist, but I think D'arcy just goes better with the pumpkins.

Hmm, breakup songs...  Stabbing westward's cd "darkest days" is basically one big breakup cd, so I'll pick some from there

for the sad breakup, "Waking up beside you"

"I've been so alone for so long

Forgotten by the world

Forgotten to myself

Your effervescent eyes have awakened me

And brushed the dust away

But I knew you'd never stay

So I memorized the color of your eyes as I lost myself inside you

And I memorized the way our legs entwined as I drifted off beside you

I miss

God I miss

Waking up beside you"

and for the ANGRY breakup "On your way down"

"i hope I see you on your way down, I hope you break, every bone

I hope it kills you on your way down, and I hope you die alone!

When all your worst fears materialze, will it be worth it?

there's nobody left who cares you're alive, was it worth it?

I'll see you on your way down (repeat)"

as for the "our song" thing, I'm usually kidding around when I do that, example "Aw... Big man with a gun... honey that's our song!"  :Starts slow dancing:

my song is "She's a Bitch" by Missy Eliott

To the M-I prrrrrrrr, cat like a semi

Nigga stole my car, why'nt you get my

Give yo' ass a black eye

Oh, say bye-bye

I'mma give your body to the sky

Run through your clique

Nigga, you pissed on trip

I'mma have to bust you in your lips

And the whips better have a whole lotta chips

Cuz I ain't for no nigga givin' tips

She's a bitch

When you say my name

Talk mo' junk but won't look my way

She's a bitch

See I got more cheese

So back on up while I roll up my sleeves

[1] - She's a bitch

You can't see me, Joe

Get on down while I shoot my flow

She's a bitch

When I do my thing

Got the place on fire, burn it down to flame

Roll up in my car, don't stop, won't stop

I'mma keep in rockin' til the clock don't tock

I'mma keep it hot, light my ass on fire

I'mma grab a philly, go and roll it at the bar

Whatcha talk? Whatcha say? Huh?

Gotta flow, gotta move it slow, huh?

Better you runnin' out the door, huh?

You gon' be a long lost soul, whacha say?

Yippe yi yo, yippe yi yi yay

Put me on stage, watchin' niggas feel me

Put my shit on wax, watch it blaze like May

Go yippe yi yo yippe yi yi yay

55, 65, hike

75, 85, test the mic

95, Missy wild for the night

105, I'mma keep the crowd hyped

[2] - She's a bitch

When they say my name

Talk mo' junk but won't look my way

She's a bitch

See I got mo' cheese

Back on up while I roll up my sleeve

She's a

Mine's R Kelly - World's Greatest:

"I am a mountain, I am a tall tree

Ohhh, I am a swift wind, Sweepin' the country

I am a river, Down in the valley

Ohhh, I am a vision, And I can see clearly

If anybody asks u who I am

Just stand up tall look 'em in the Face and say

I'm that star up in the sky, I'm that mountain peak up high

Hey I made it, I'm the worlds greatest

And I'm that little bit of hope, When my backs against the ropes

I can feel it mmm, I'm the worlds greatest"....

Wait, this is the Personal hell thread? No?

I suppose a defining song for me'd be Wannadies - Because:

"I'm counting in - the band begins, because, because and all because I say so

It's fun to be, around to tease, you all because, because and all because I want to

I'm bold and brave, I go my own ways because, because, and all because....

I drink and smoke until I choke, until I'm broke

Because I want to!

I want, to show the world, that I know just how to cause, to cause real chaos

I shake and spin, I am the king because, because and all because....

I drink and smoke until I choke, until I'm broke, I laugh at every stupid joke

Because I want to!

I drink and smoke, until I choke, until I'm broke, I laugh at every stupid joke

Because I want to!"

I just work during the week for money to cut loose at the weekend and often leave myself broke, and I do like fucking with my friends' heads....

Man this is a difficult one, but probably 'Monkey Gone to Heaven' by the Pixies.

If the man is 5

Then the man is 5

Then the Devil is 6

Then the Devil is 6

Then the Devil is 6

And if the Devil is 6, then God is 7

Then God is 7

This monkey's gone to heaven

>cue guitar solo

Pixies are great, but this song probably is their most defining moment.

Just had a thought. As most of the songs are personal ones, I'll post my fave personal song that I feel relates. It's a bit of a newbie, 'Rockstar' by Major Matt Mason USA (leader of the new Anti-Folk genre in NY).

Just because you passed the pitcher

I thought I had to drink

Just because you dropped the anchor

I thought I had to sink

Just because you thought I was someone else

I thought thats who I should be

Just because you said you knew me

I thought you knew me

Everybody looks like somebody

But nobody I know

Everywhere I think of going

Is somewhere I don't go

Every time I'm thinking I'm thinking

I'm thinking that you knew

That there's nothing else to do

So I think I'm leaving you

Learning to lie to myself

I'm thinking about my health

I'm wondering where you are and I'm thinking

I don't wanna be a rockstar any more

I don't wanna be a rockstar

Just because you took my picture

I thought I was a star

Just because you gave me candy

I got inside your car

And every single day the sun went down

I thought it went down on me

And when I got up I was shit outta luck

And everything I do to remember

Is making me forget

Every lie I say to get by

No longer makes me upset

The brighter you make that birthday cake

The darker it seems to get

And all of the wind that fills my sails

Just blows right through me

I think I'm in love with myself

I'm not who I thought I was

I'm stoned and I'm watching TV

And I'm thinking

I don't wanna be a rockstar any more

I don't wanna be a rockstar

It can be found at Audiogalaxy if anyone is interested. If not, hey, your loss.  :D

Tonight Matthew, my defining song is gonna be 'Helter Skelter'...

When i get to the bottom i go back to the top of the slide,

Where i stop and i turn and i go for a ride,

Till i get to the bottom and i see you again,

Do you, don't you want me to love you,

I'm coming down fast but i'm miles above you,

Tell me tell me tell me come on tell me the answer,

You may be a lover but you ain't no dancer

Helter skelter, Helter skelter, helter skelter!

damn i see some good choices and good taste in music here. Dream Theater's title track to their latest installment, 'Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulance', has still left me shaking from when i first heard it months ago :D. I'm a sucker for a really long song anyway, but 6DOIN really delivers. In my dictoinary, this will be an example under the listing of 'tour de force'. If anyone hasn't heard it and is interested in giving it a listen via download, make sure to get the full 42 minute version (you hear me, 42), because it is a suite and you might only get one of it's componant parts. Other defining songs include S&G's 'Sounds Of Silence', Queen's 'Somebody To Love', the Beatles' 'Across The Universe', Rush's 'Dreamline', Pearl Jam's 'Black', REM's 'Everybody Hurts' and all the songs off the Beach Boys' 'Pet Sounds'.

Just thought of this one, got it on a free cd with a music magazine, heard one other song by the group but don't know much about them but its a cool song and it fits me perfectly:

VAST - My TV and You

My TV and you, it's the only place to be

Nothing else to do, nothing else to see

A room without a view has so much for me and you

I was born to stare at stars on ceiling walls

It's all I need, it's all I ever needed

Until the world is gone

Take me how I am 'cause you know I'll never change

I was born to stare at who stares back at me

If I make it up to that big show in the sky

All I really want is my TV and you

It's all I need, it's all I ever needed

Until the world is gone

It's all I need, it's all I ever needed

My love for life is gone
