Gaming Blargh/random bits

so are those PS 1 discs for the early RE games? Aren't those completely pointless for owners of new ps3's? I can't remember if they only got rid of backwards compatible ps2 games or both 1 & 2.... regardless, that collection looks sick.

seems like sony is putting more effort into those HD re releases. I guess they assume folks dont give a shit about clearly seeing and being able to count all those polygons on psx games. I'm lucky enough to still have a 60gig so ive been burning through shit like kingdom hearts 2 and bully lately. I really hate that they took the BC away though. Like you said, it doesn't make much sense.

It runs the PS1 games from a light weight emulator, which is what most PS2's had as well. The PS2 compatible PS3's didn't really use a software based emulator, they basically had an entire PS2 built into them.

That makes even less sense, PS2 games were on CDs and DVDs, PS3 games are on BluRay discs. BluRays can play both DVDs and CDs.

It's not the physical format that's the issue. Here's what I understand: The PS3 processes information in a very different way than the PS2, which makes emulation really difficult. This is why, in order to have a backwards compatible console at launch, they had to essentially put an entire PS2 inside of it.

This is also why PS3's used to cost so damn much. They were really expensive to manufacture, and you were basically paying for two consoles. They took a lot of shit about the price, and one of the things they decided to sacrifice was the PS2 CPU.

The PS2 games you download have to be built from the ground up to run on a PS3, which is why there's a steady trickle of titles instead of just the full library instantly available.

Short answer: money money money.

i like how baytor makes it sound like "if it eats the disc, it should be able to play it"...not all the same bits on the inside, tragically. also, logan's half-right: PS2 was a bitch to program for in general, but its weird cause even sony's lead guy said dropping the PS2 parts didnt shave much $ off at all, most of the cost back then was blu-ray diodes.

ive high hopes for the HD remakes. i swear to god if RE4 uses the PS2 assets instead of the superior GC ones (lotta gameplay variances too) i'm gonna be pissed. it's gonna be weird enough hearing another voice actor for James in SH2.

upscaling is cool too, but man, after PS2 and GC/wii emulators, fuck that, i like the kinda hardware that can brute force render the native resolution into 720p or so. ive put up screenshots, but seriously, old games like SH3 and RE4 can be made to look about current gen. shit's magical.

This guy attempts to beat Super Mario Bros. with the lowest score possible. He only kills 2 enemies: a goomba in order to avoid getting some coins in world 8, and Bowser himself. He edits out the parts where he's standing at the flag waiting for the clock to hit 000.

I still don't get that. A gaming console is effectively a stripped down computer, now a computer can't play older games due to software differences but I can install a DOS emulator and play Moraff's World on a brand new PC fresh out of the box, hence my confusion on why the gaming equivalent of the monolith from 2001 can play really big explodey games and old pixellated bullshit but for some reason requires all new hardware to play the middle-ground, specially when its retarded cousin the Xbox 360 does just that (albeit it doesn't do an awesome job, but it does it.) Something just smells like lies here.

it's because you're thinking in terms of PC's, which consoles (for the most part) are not.

only certain Gensis emu's (and it took a while) could closely emulate the lo-fi sound card that system had. it took years for any real Saturn emulator to come around worth a crap, because of the CPU's complexity (2 CPUs, six processors, and a huge, difficult motherboard - all this before we talk about how much original source code was lost), and even today the best you can hope for is playing close to original stats (no upscaling/re-rendering etc). Dreamcast was much easier to program for in its time, but NullDC (best one out) still isn't nearly 100% a system-replacer yet. there's almost no scene at all for the original Xbox, which kinda explains why the 360 only does software emulation, and even then, not all that great.

there's no standard like PC's tend to meet, setups are so unique you basically have to give it several gens to have enough resources/effort to get it down (obscure ones like the CD-i for instance never will), and even then we have old systems you can't just brute force a solid emulation from. my current fear is that the PS3's complexity will put it in this spot years from now, though at least sony seems to be still pursuing the cell from other companies, so i guess we'll see. it's becoming so standard with all the 3 to drop off BC that i really really wish one of them would launch a model for like $50 more and call it the "legacy" one just to keep the parts from last gen intact somehow, even if they're external and work via USB or something. i get that companies see diminishing returns by putting effort/cost into games they no longer profit from, i just hate it.

Thing is, they figured out that people will pay a few bucks to buy those titles again digitally, so the backwards compat market isn't nearly as attractive as the potential profit to be gained from people buying the same games multiple times.

The 360 was steadily adding new XBOX games that worked for a long while, then they suddenly stopped and started just selling them on the marketplace. You will never be able to play the original discs of The Chronicles of Riddick or Otagi on any 360.

or Def Jam: Fight for NY, or a few others i wanted to get. KOTOR and Jet Set Radio emulate not so well too.

that's as fine an example as any; it was kinda naive to think MS would keep spending $/time with programmers to appease a dwindling xbox 1 fanbase. it's why if software emulation isn't solid out of the box (the 80 GB PS3 supposedly plays 80%+ of PS2 titles, which is great as long as the ones you like aren't mostly in that 20), i don't expect much from it later. me, i cant even bitch about the HD collections: they take more effort than just slapping the old shit on a disc, so i'm buying. that said, id buy a fucking plain-as-it-was-on-PS2 Suikoden collection, or a Clover one with Godhand, Okami, and the Viewtiful Joes at a high price.

honestly, every survey sony showed had BC as a small part of the demographic, apparently most people wanted more blu-ray stuff. its shitty, but i still think the worst one yet is gonna be nintendo's upcoming WU system: it's 100% BC with the wii, so its likely built on similar architecture (unlike the PS3, possibly the 360 but im not sure), which means it's running a lotta the same stuff as the gamecube...yet there's 0 GC compatibility. to me, that's way worse than dropping the GBA slot off the DS, because i don't know the exact details here but i'm willing to bet it'dve been cheaper to keep that on board than even a fucking USB slot. it's not like Nintendo's pumping out GC remakes either; i don't think Pikmin 2 wii even came out over here.
