King of Snake

This summer's been ace for music over here, got to see two legendary acts in the space of a week. Saw Kris Kristofferson in a two-hour solo acoustic set with Jont, my sis and my mum (she's been his greatest fan for decades), unbelievably good live, Sunday Morning Coming Down the obvious highlight. Even got to meet him (extremely briefly) afterwards, he spent a good 40 minutes talking to fans and signing outside on a cold English summer's night. Then within a week got to see the Pixies, a band that I never dreamed I'd ever get to see live (tho you could say the same for Kris), their performance didn't have to be perfect cause the songs are all so good but goddamnit they were. Somehow tho they were on as festival support to ther fucking Stereophonics (!), just headed over to the beer tent after and got nicely pissed with lots of other fans while they played Doolittle on a loop. Saw Billy Talent twice (good band, got talking to the bass player for quite a bit, Jont had a lot of fun trying to get him to say aboot), Hope of the States (an interesting band, remind me of halfway between Idlewild and Godspeed! You Black Emperor) and a fair few local manchester bands. Big one for the winter is Hot Snakes, John 'Speedo' Reis is one of the greatest guitarists I've heard (he's amazing as Rocket from the Crypt's frontman and lead, let alone what he can achieve when he doesn't have to concentrate on singing!). They've yet to announce the full tour so I dont know if they're gonna play Manchester but I might take a trip over to Leeds and/or Nottingham if they're not. Anyone into heavy but melodic rock should give them a try, "Suicide Invoice" is the most accessible of their two (soon to be 3) albums out so far, good tracks to download are 'LAX', 'Suicide Invoice' (title track) or '10th Planet' off their other album.

So I finally get an internet connection, with broadband - finally up to date with the new century...so why am I using this to listen to 80s music on online radio?! Oh yeah, cause it's funny as fuck! "...you are GOLD (gold)...", I can see Tony Hadley's nostrils flaring in my mind's eye...

Dude, remember that CD I gave you in Sheffield, it's got a full Foos acoustic set bootleg (amongst a shitload of other things), check it out! I have to vote for Everlong, kickass song, kickass acoustic, kickass video! My next favorites'd be Big Me and Learn to Fly, but Everlong gets it for the surreal shit, giant phones, the legs/logs dream bit, the nunchucks!

Anyone who hasn't seen it should really check it out, it's badass. Bucket, you'd love it, it's like a French Sleepy Hollow with better action, unfortunately there's no Christina Ricci but Monica Belluci should suffice! I enjoyed this a lot, it's been out for a while over here, went thru indie cinemas but it got a good word of mouth and has been doing very well on rentals. IC, on the 'who you'd like to go drinking with' thread, one of the french guys I mentioned, Vincent Cassel, is a standout acting wise in this, having fun as a snarling one-armed aristocrat.

Not too bad a movie, Del Toro and (surprisingly) Phillipe make a good team, gunfights were good, don't remember too much from it but I remember enjoying it all the same.
