The NZA
true, but the xbox 1 and gamecube were a lot more complex than the NES, and they felt like goddamn tanks in comparison. you're right though, we got hard drives and all kindsa shit now...i just hope i dont need service plans next gen, even if it is kind of working out for me. The NZA
yeah, so this looks breaking right now, but sega leaked some crazy shit this morning on their public FTP...id call it questionable but apparently this has happened before (they dont use a password? what?), we'll see if it holds but check this shit out from a somewhat recent meeting with sony: SCEA Meeting Aug 5th NotesAug 6 2009 – DRAFT FOR COMMENTS Objectives of Meeting Dyer agreed to regular quarterly meetings with SOA Sony PS3 SCEA reiterated plans to sell 13 million PS3s this year Big announcement back half of year they can’t talk about (potentially price cut of PS3 to reach hardware goals) SCEA commented on indexing between PS3 and 360 SKUs, should be around 2:1 to garner most favorable treatment. Motion Controller Spring 2010 launch (March in JP) No bundle/pricing details yet, should come Sept 1 Plan on selling 4-5MM units WW SCEA agreed to provide a list of Sega IP that would work well with the motion controller, Virtua Tennis was an example Motion Controller support allows easy way to differentiate PS3 SKU Other differentiation opportunities include PSP/PS3 interoperability – think of features that would make users want to buy both PS3 and PSP SKUs. Alpha Protocol Michael Foster, product evaluator, said AP felt barely RPG. Initial level too challenging for players. “Mass Effect felt more RPG.” Review notes sent to John Merlino a few weeks prior. After meeting Gerald mentioned AP is a high priority for his team. Planet 51 Sell in of PS3 SKU – SCEA noted that other movie titles on PS3 had underperformed as well (inc. Transformers) this cycle. Dyer suggests contacting Susan at Walmart and asking what she wants in the pack to sell this SKU (movie tix etc) Other possibilities are Hybrid movie disc (BD 25 or 50 with Game and Movie on same disc). Bayonetta Collectors edition with Bayonetta Action Figure Novo recommended launching PSN demo around Xmas based off a Jan 5th Ship date with 2-3 week run out to launch. 3-4 weeks is usually ideal demo timing with fresh content every week leading up to launch (trailers, insider video about PG heritage, video blogs). Vancouver 2010 HOME, Olympic destination would garner a lot of positive attention from SCEA Should be doing same with Bayonetta, Marvel etc. Easy to launch in all territories. HOME merchandizing opportunities (clothes etc). Sonic Racing Open to DLC to differentiate PS3 SKU – not ratchet and clank but other characters maybe characters from Rare or Fable universes Yakuza Could put Japanese games directly on PSN for download in a special Japanese Import section (pricing $9.99 to $39.99 for full game). Might need to localize menus at least with subtitles. SCEA interested in helping on MKTG side if they can have period of exclusivity. AVP Another great HOME candidate AVP avatars Hybrid BD disc with movie Iron Man 2 Great candidate for HOME space – explore Tony Stark’s lab etc. Should have one for Marvel in general. PSU2 Could do bundle at GameStop with PSP 30-35K units on UMD, Go, or both. Valkyria 1937 Could bundle with PSP as well. Vanquish and Aliens: CM Opportunity for PS3/PSP interoperability (see Eidos Batman, Army of Two, Assassin’s Creed for good examples). If we offer that SCEA would be really interested in having us at their booth next E3. Thor SCEA would like a look at the code soon. Sonic Anniversary Could put out collectors edition with all old sonic games on one BD disc. “Best of Sonic” for around $99. SCEA would love PSN exclusive power ups/different game modes (like Castlevania’s flip it over/backwards) PS2 emulator for PS3 (confidential) SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN (GTA Vice City/Sonic/etc) For co Marketing money show PS3 controller on TV ads – similar to EA Madden Spots, NCAA, etc… London Olympics Perfect opportunity for Motion Controller integration. DC Digital Titles If we provide a list of DC titles SCEA will let us know which ones they’re interested in having exclusively. If we give them a long period of exclusivity they’ll give us more marketing support. PSP Titles For SKU differentiation it’s best to offer features that are slightly different from PS3 version. Titles that are coming up on PSP are Assassin’s Creed II, GTA China Wars, Resident Evil, Little Big Planet – all massive franchises. SCEA has a specific PSP deck which they can send up with their hardware director for a chat. word on GAF (where i found it) is that Sega's been talking to MS about DC titles too, so god knows post 9-9-09, maybe theyve decided to get smart & start some kind of bidding war over all those dreamcast properties theyve been sitting on...? again, we'll see how this pans out, but you cant act at all surprised of sony starts selling PS2 games on PSN via emulation later, i think. I'm working on getting a ps3 going again. I've done a decent amount of reading/watching youtube videos about common problems, and i've taken the broken one I've got apart more than a couple of times ( I think I've got one of the 2 issues resolved, 2nd issue I havn't started with yet). If anybody has questions about their busted ps3, I possibly have solutions.

The NZA
next firmware looks to also link PSN to facebook (this is gonna be awesome, cant wait to bomb all these farmville/"im awake now!" status updating motherfuckers with trophies & achievements, heh), as well as tidying up the friends list that lotta people were bitching about. my blind ass loves the huge icons, of course, but apparently you can now customize the colors or something. what sucks is that since the last one introduced the awesome dynamic (moving) wallpapers, all my old ones look boring now, and i refuse to pay for premium ones (yet, im told the LBP one is great). Again, for newt and others who forgot, the Zebra-ass Afrika one's free if you can find it on the japanese PSN.
The NZA
so, there's more & more talk of PSN premium. so long as sony sticks to its word on free online, i'm not too bothered - but some of the extras do sound interesting. the "1-hour full game trials" could explain why PSN isnt strong with demos sometimes, and present an interesting idea. id like to see more about access to PS1 classics and such, and yeah, the inability to access Hulu on the browser right now is also explained by the "TV catchup" feature. huh. The NZA
Sony patents backwards compatible device Sony Japan is trying to patent an invention that would solve backwards compatibility problems on PS3. The device - a new generation to previous generation console adapter - is external and has its own processor, DVD encoder/emulator, sound chip and graphics chip. It connects to the PS3 via a cable. But don't get your hopes up, as this is only an application for a patent - nobody's actually said yes, as as Siliconera pointed out. Sony Europe gave Eurogamer a flat "no comment". doesn't mean anything yet, but could be cool - i don't expect it to render 1080p 4xAA like the PC emu, but it'd still be cool to not bone so many PS3 owners out of their previous collection. Keth
shit, if mine goes down again and im forced to get a slim I sure hope that thing is around. what was the initial reason for getting rid of BC n the first place? :/
The NZA
it's never been fucking clear to me, and up there with "$599!" for sony's dumb moves this gen. Initially, it was said to be part of the ever-important slimming down on manufacturing costs measure; i recall Kaz saying they managed to halve the cost of making a ps3 (shit was eating up to a $200 loss on $600 units WTF), but Tretton @ E3 or some such event said the cost was so insignificant, that wasn't a factor, so who knows? i was convinced for a while they wanted to put PS2 games up on PSN and re-sell them to consumers, but its been years and they've not even tried anything past 1 (2 soon!) HD collection re-makes, so from every conceivable angle, ive never understood this. i think they said once polls indicated it wasnt a priority to most consumers - and im willing to believe that's partly true - but if it wasnt a cost decision somehow, i just dont know. Playstation library is so good, and at its best last gen; why you'd want to distance yourself from it is beyond me.
The NZA
streaming Netflix comes to PS3 Improvements include: *Movies and TV shows from Netflix will be accessible from PS3’s XMB menu under a new Netflix icon under the Video category. To access Netflix, PS3 owners will need to sign-in with their PlayStation®Network account. *Support for Dolby Digital Plus 5.1-channel surround sound will enable users to experience premium-quality audio. *A new user interface, including the recently added search functionality, will deliver a much richer and faster browsing experience, making it easier to find the specific titles you’re looking for or to discover new content. *Some movies and TV shows will be viewable in 1080i resolution, offering an enhanced visual experience as more consumers adopt HDTVs. *The amount of time to start playback will be improved. *An increasing number of movies and TV shows will be viewable with subtitles or alternate audio tracks. really awesome to see, the XBL integration was cool, and the fact this doesn't look to require PS+ is a huge plus in my book. also, streaming in 5.1 is nice. video here
Jables
All of this is academic for me as it appears it's actually Netflix that opts not to distribute/service Oz. Imagine my disappointment after seeing Joel's new XBL update with Netflix integration, coming home to find only shitty old Zune video(which still doesn't make sense as we don't even have fucking Zunes). Didn't mean to troll, but I was going to say something like 'if netflix can be made to work on my PS3, then YAY' before realising my mistake. That and I just wanted to share a little misery. The NZA
ouch. could you setup an account in US/EU and then stream with it in Oz, you think? PS3's region free so making another country's account wouldn't be hard, no idea what'd come through on your end, though.
Jables
DOubtful. So captivated was I by the idea of Netflix that I signed up for an account the minute I got back Using Jax's Smoothie King store as a residential and discovered that it still doesn't service Australia, just gives us the same 'fuck you for not being Mmmur'can' message I get off Hulu and the like.
