Desiderata (Things to be Desired)

by Max Ehrmann

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,

and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible without surrender

be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly;

and listen to others,

even the dull and the ignorant;

they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,

they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,

you may become vain and bitter;

for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;

it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs;

for the world is full of trickery.

But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;

many persons strive for high ideals;

and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.

Especially, do not feign affection.

Neither be cynical about love;

for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment

it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,

gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.

But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.

Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,

be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,

no less than the trees and the stars;

you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you,

no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,

whatever you conceive Him to be,

and whatever your labors and aspirations,

in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,

it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful.

Strive to be happy.

Dear Paul,

Thanks so much. I’m glad you think I have a sense of humor, it shows you must have one, too. Keep visiting and I will try to continue to amuse you.

Regarding the bundling column:

Jacooz,

Great story! They also had beds w/board between the couple, and then there's Tristan and the sword!

Dear AO

I’m really intrigued with this Tristan and the sword idea. I’ve heard the legends of Tristan but didn’t know about the sword. Can anyone explain?

Jacooz,

The downtown decorations MUST GO... If Sponge Bob can be stollen, surely they can too. They are DISGUSTING..... We need help in this town.... what can we do? Wait, I know.... lets open up another Dollar Store and put some really classy stuff up..... Holy Crap, I solved our problem.....

Dear Vicki,

I feel your pain. I assume you’re talking about the shitty downtown Pittsfield Christmas decorations. They do lack . . . something. But then again, downtown Pittsfield lacks oh so much. My fave spots on North Street: Bellissimo Dolce, Trattoria Rustica (on McKay) and Digital Blend. Also the Goodwill, where I buy all my Christmas presents. It’s much better than the Dollar Store, trust me.

Dear Jacoozi,

When I was in London at the National Portrait Gallery, I rented one of those head-set things that chatters about the paintings. It explained that in the 13th century, it was believed that the color blue warded off evil spirits. Desperate to protect their young sons from evil, mothers began to dress their boys in blue. Eventually, pink was picked as the girls color, not because it fucking had any magical powers, but because it complimented blue nicely.

Boys get protection and girls get cute clothes...Has anything changed?

Thanks, Shanee, for your worldly insight. That trip of yours to London was not a complete waste after all. (Just kidding.) Everybody knows that girls, women, ladies are evil anyway, so even the color blue couldn’t help them. I think that’s the message we’re to get from this.

Ha!
