Thelogan
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/XanatosGambit Shit. I read something toying with this earlier, and now I've had time to think about it. I'm on my phone and can't find the link though, so it's a paraphrase with my own thoughts interjected. Loki won... Tony almost worked it out in the tower too. He doesn't give a shit about Earth and he WANTED the team to come together and defeat the Chitauri. He just needed a free ride back to Asgard, the place he actually DOES give a shit about and wants to conquer. And now Thanos has a pawn in Asgard, where this happens to be: Loki "losing" the the Avengers was the BEST possible outcome for Loki, who is back in the realm he wants to rule, and Thanos, who now potentially has access to the Infinity Gauntlet. Whedon just earned a lot of respect from me. The heroes and the audience get to sit around eating shwarma and thinking about what a good job they did. Lycaon
I'm also kinda of the opinion that Loki was also trying to get the fuck away from Thanos (getting back to Asgard was delicious icing). Maybe he wants the gauntlet himself to rid himself of Thanos permanently and make himself seem a hero to his fellow Asgardians (that the right word?). Recall, part of his gambit in Thor was trying to prove himself to Odin. Loki is all about the daddy issues.
Reverend Jax
This internet speculation is a Xanatos Gambit (win-win) for Whedon, because if he didn't intend on this being the case, then he could write Avengers 2 around this idea and everyone would say it was very clever but not so out-of-nowhere that it was impossible to see coming, and if he did plan it, then the same accolades would be showered on him. And if he goes in a different direction with the sequel, he could say Loki's plot, as speculated on the internets, was his original endgame, but after it became widely read on the internets, he decided to go in a different direction to maintain the element of surprise, but still get the credit for plotting it out that way originally. No matter what, Whedon wins. Edited May 31, 2012 by Reverend Jax
Lycaon
Are you suggesting a Xanatos Gambit within a Xanatos Gambit? Madness, sir. It can't be done.
Mr. Hakujin
Gah. I wish I never would've read that Xanatos Gambit theory. If it is Whedon's plan, then thanks for spoiling the plot to Avengers 2. :( And I agree w/ Jax. Whedon using/not using the Xanatos Gambit is in itself a Xanatos Gambit (provided an alternate plot is equally as clever). He's been playing coy about directing a sequel, but if this blogger's theory of the Xanatos Gambit is correct, then the sequel would have to already have been mapped out. I'm inclined to believe that b/c Marvel's Filmverse has been a pretty damned tight ship.

Aartemys
Okay. Finally got around to watching this. Can I admit that I wasn't enthralled until the last half hour or so? I mean, yeah...the one-liners were great and I wasn't falling asleep or anything, but I wasn't sitting on the edge of my seat either. Did I walk out of there yearning for more? Eh, not really. Maybe its because I haven't seen Iron Man I or II...don't know. Let me sleep on it and I will come back to this later. Maybe I didn't read it up there, but did anyone mention Stan Lee's cameo? And did y'all recognize Chrissy from Growing Pains? I spotted her instantly...

Reverend Jax
Interesting bit about how (rumor has it) Sony actually partially owns the character now, not just the film rights.
Reverend Jax
This version of the Avengers had 3 of its scenes left out, the scenes that did air were played out of order, and the marketing budget for it was roughly $3.50.
