Jables
Haku has a moment of clarity and I couldn't agree more. Let's see Whitney govern the Thunderdome!
The NZA
don't know how Tina got involved here (and fuck, had no idea she was that old somehow), but the next cycle starts here.
Thelogan
NZA has made the transformation complete. The final night of restless, sweaty sleep before awakening to the glory of the full moon. This thread is now about physically abusive relationships. Now leave the science to the men and go make yourself invisible.
C_U_SPACECOWBOY
I love how Logan's sig of Batman and Robin perfectly mirrors that pic of Mr. and Mrs. Richards!

Iambaytor
Tina Turner was the picture I used for my RIP Whitney picture, Haku was just the only person who wasn't a racist and actually noticed it.
the division of joy
Tina Turner was the picture I used for my RIP Whitney picture, Haku was just the only person who wasn't a racist and actually noticed it. I figured it was obvious enough not to need mentioning.
Thelogan
Right? I mean . Haku just happens to be the guy who watches a Yakov Smirnoff routine and goes "AHaaa, it's funny because Russia". 1

Thelogan
Just listened to this, thankfully I was able to find the clip on youtube. It's a hoot. RIP
Iambaytor
Man Dolly Parton must be really pissed right now with all the extra credit Whitney's getting for "I Will Always Love You" I don't think they've even mentioned it was a cover one single time. The NZA
when people outdo you on your own song, you usually don't talk about it much.
Lycaon
Is there a thread about covers being better (or at least doing better) than the original?
Iambaytor
when people outdo you on your own song, you usually don't talk about it much. Never seemed to stop there's also the proof in this very thread that more recently Whitney sounded not unlike comedian Bobcat Goldthwait when singing the same song. The NZA
should we use fat elvis' vegas performances as an argument why big momma thorton doesn't get her due? because your argument's crazy but i like the world it creates. similarly, you have a roommate who would tell you the beatles are the exception to everything. i used to prefer the joe version too, but i came around to their take
Reverend Jax
when people outdo you on your own song, you usually don't talk about it much. It doesn't hurt that she makes a pretty penny from being the original songwriter, year after year (not just a one-time fee). Otis Redding wrote Respect, but you don't see his estate complain that everyone thinks of it as Aretha Franklin's song. Iambaytor
Otis Redding didn't make it a part of his career singing respect. Kris Kristofferson did sing "Me and Bobby McGee" but when (outside of the Highwaymen) has anybody ever paid to listen to Kris Kristofferson sing anything? I mean I won't pull out the obvious "it's only popular because of that stupid fucking movie" because I'm pretty sure Dolly premeried her version in "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" but it's not like her version was shockingly worse (or even worse at all for that matter.) Not to mention, it's not hard to see who deserved to get more mileage out of it considering modern renditions: Just saying, consistency > a flash in the pan in my opinion. In my eyes it would be like calling "I Am the Walrus" Bono's song for the cover he did of it in "Across the Universe." The NZA
come on. whitney's take > dolly's, reposting logan's material doesn't change that.
sinestetici
You know what's weird? I hate country music...like, openly loathe and am hostile to 99 percent of it, but I like Dolly's version better.
Iambaytor
Dolly Parton is a very solid recording artist but it's often dwarfed by all the horrifying amounts of plastic surgery she's gotten over the years (I feel that Nick should be able to sympathize with liking a popular musician in spite of such things.) I'll admit Whitney can belt out that chorus with a lot more gusto as she doesn't have comically over-sized breasts weighing her lungs down but the rest of the song sounds better in the original version. The NZA
aw, agree to disagree i guess. i got nothing against dolly; you already namedropped best little whorehouse in texas anyway. i was just saying id've defended any quality covers Winehouse did too, if they were quality - yeah, she was a hot mess at the end, so many blues/jazz/etc artists are though. sinestetici
See that's the thing...I always thought the song warranted a softer style. The belting is good, but it feels a little desperate I guess when Whitney sings it.
The NZA
i do like the earlier/closing verses better. it's even weirder when you hear it in spanish.
