New Trailers

I saw that movie something like 3 years ago. I assumed that maybe it was weak because Robert E. Howard's Solomon Kane was a weak character, I figured there had to be a reason why he wasn't as popular as Kull and Conan. But I'm currently reading the adventures of Solomon Kane and though they floundered a bit for the first couple of stories, Kane's campaign in Africa (the majority of the 10 completed stories) are a pulpy delight and not a goddamn thing like this boring stupid movie. It had its moments and everything else by the director I've seen was pretty good (he uses fog in all of his movies, it's no surprise he's directing the new Silent Hill movie) but I'd put it between Kull the Conqueror and the less than glowing reviews I've heard about the new Conan movie in terms of quality.

Silent Hill trailer came out today. It looks awful. I know there has to be artistic license when making a film out of a video game, but it looks as though the producers have changed everything about the game for the movie, and it just looks terrible. But here, judge for yourself:

I didn't see much not to like there, except that there appeared to be a lot of talky non-creepy parts which will hopefully relegated to the first 15 minutes. I never played 3, but I know that the story-lines for these games were a bit muddled and convoluted so I would be okay with them doing their own take. It worked for the first one.

CLOUD ATLAS Trailer

What the hell is this all about? That trailer does not go where you think it's going at the beginning....

From imdb.com:

An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.

The trailer looked interesting. They've sold me on getting a ticket. Now the question is, will it be another Matrix or another Matrix Revolutions.

Actually Chris, I was able to figure out that premise from the trailer, but that doesn't mean the trailer didn't throw be for a loop. It's hard to see a single narrative thread being weaved through all those characters and periods that will leave the audience feeling like they've been told a single, complete story. I'm over hating on the Wachowskis over the Matrix Revolutions. I loved V for Vendetta and am wholly unapologetic in my love for the Speed Racer movie. With some time to distance myself from it's initial release, I'm come to see The Matrix Revolutions as being a victim of it's own ambition. The Wachowskis clearly didn't plan out how the Matrix story would play out over 3 films when they wrote the first one, and they set up high expectations for those sequels. Every artist is allowed their share of missteps, and the Wachowskis have put out my quality than disappointments in my book.

Nick should be excited. He wasn't bothered one bit by how much the first one sucked, I can't imagine he'd be bothered by any suckage of a sequel.

if i recall jax's review of the last one:

"I am boringly unable to suspend my atheistic views for an hour and a half, and am likewise bored by non-animated actors. please excuse me as i go say incorrect things about breakfast cereals."

i didn't entirely make sense at the time, but looking back, your words rang true.

ps fuckaWachowskis

Ehh.... Cloud Atlas kinda looks like The Fountain with more ass kicking in it. I fucking hated the fountain, and I kind of can't handle the "Everything is Connected" wankery that some people think passes for being deep. It does look pretty, and I'm all about Speed Racer, so I think the Wachows deserve a shot and I'll see it.

Umm, the Master anyone?

I missed if this has been posted about, but this is all I can think of until Sep. 14th.

Meh. The imdb summation seems to point to a cohesive narrative that would address that concern. Also, they're working from a novel, so there's (hopefully) a more clear cut narrative structure than the Matrix Trilogy. At best I'm anticipating from the trailer a film that has an interestingly complicated structure (more on par w/ Inception in that regard) than a film that has a pointlessly convoluted structure (most appropriate example I can think of would be Matrix Revolutions).

Good example w/ The Fountain. That fits better than my Revolutions one.

We've discussed THE MASTER somewhere in this thread, I think. I think I saw a shortened teaser trailer around here somewhere, no?

The man has a pretty phenomenal track record when it comes to dramas shot in Brooklyn. Come to think of it, looking over his filmography, Spike Lee is still going pretty goddamned strong. I don't know what this Oldboy remake bullshit is about, but this could be excellent.

I was listening to Joel Mchale (who kind of sounds like the trailer narrator) on the radio awhile back and he was talking about how they constantly torture Chevy Chase with Karate Dog on the Community set. Mchale was buying up every cheap copy on Ebay for months and then they filled Chevy's trailer with em.

I don't know, seems a bit Hallmark Channel Movie of the Week to me.
